A Marsh-Wiggle is a creature from The Chronicles of Narnia. Specifically in The Silver Chair, we meet one named Puddleglum. They live in little teepee-like houses in swamps and are pessimists.
I just kind of feel like a Marsh-Wiggle lately. Like I have something of a pessimistic outlook on the world and just want to be left alone to live in a little house by the river.
I'm re-reading Silver Chair, and I'm wondering where the idea of a Marsh-wiggle came from. Dwarves, dryads and centaurs etc are present in the mythos of many different cultures and have been there for centuries. Not so Marsh-wiggles. I googled it and found that CS Lewis invented them for SC. Of course, he needed a species completely unique to Narnia for Rilian to recognise when the enchantment was lifted. But where did the idea for this strange species come from? Do they represent anything?
They are never mentioned in any of the other books. Did they exist in the Golden Age when the Pevensies ruled? How about when the Telmarines conquered Narnia? If not, when did they come in? What's their history? Are they all that pessimistic as a species, and what caused their society to be that way? They're so puzzling.
The portrait of Puddleglum) He is very funny. A great character, one of my favorite)
