Inktober day 1: martlets. These are actually a small part of a big project that I will be announcing later on in the month! A "martlet" is a mythical heraldic bird that closely resembles a marten or swallow. It has no feet, only tufts of feathers that resemble feet, which means it never truly touches the ground.
One thing about Martlets I haven't meantioned yet is they areĀ āeusocialā..kind ofĀ
The sapient owl-bugs are only the haploid half of the species lifecycle, and in function are more like sapient pollen to theirĀ āmother plantā. The mother plant grows new Martlet offspring every year, meanwhile breeding Martlets mate to produce new mother plants.
The Martlets are just one of tens of tousands of species with a similar generational cycle on their planet. TheseĀ āzoophyteā are both the dominant terrestrial fauna and flora in their planet.
Most diploidĀ plantsĀ can survive on their own and are fully capable of getting their energy and nutritional needs though photosynthesis and nutrients from the soil and Aeroplankton. The Martletās plant however has a far moreĀ activeĀ metabolism and is entirely dependent on its offspring to provide it nutrience and protection.
Ā Despite lacking a centralized nervous system and not beingĀ āsapientā, Martlets tend to have very strong bonds and emotional attachments to the mother plants and very muchĀ āloveā them. Other species find their relationships with the mother plants to be strange, but the Martlets don't think it's any different then how other species take care of other members of their families.
