Thinking about these freaks again.
Doodling som Debbies. Kinda want to play with how her nose looks and make it a bit more fun to draw.
Do the other dragons know that chuck is a basilisk? Does chuck know? (Sorry if this has been answered, I’m new. Also love how you draw your characters. Your art style is so fun! It reminds me of 80’s and 90’s cartoons)
Dragons have only vague notions on what basilisk are really like, a "king of serpents" must be something that would stand out after all. Plus given their deadly reputation many dragons reckon any potential encounter they would have with one would kill them. They wouldn't know a basilisk if it was right in front of them....
Chuck, despite all his vague feelings of "not being a true dragon" and thinking (and wishing) his egg was swapped at birth with his real parents elsewhere, does not suspect himself to be a basilisk. He fantasizes of being something else, perhaps a human baby cursed by fairies to be a monster, or even some sort of awful demonic changeling but the notion of being a basilisk slides off him entirely despite the stories he's heard about them. His dear friend Cowparsley doesn't even think basilisks are real, and nothing more then a boogeyman to scare wormlings, so Chuck isn't even sure if basilisks are real.
Belette is the only one to seriously suspect that he is a basilisk, almost exclusively from intuition around his scent being "off" (she has more knowledge on basilisks then the others) . She wants to kill him, but she isn't sure if she believes she can (she knows more on how a dragon's power works then most). Belette does not share these suspicions with the others since she doesn't want the others to try to use him against her.
Thuban takes notice that Chuck has a basilisk's crest, but he confusingly just assumes he's a dragon who is trying to be a basilisk.
Been thinking about Vireo lately. And trying to remember how to draw her.
Considering giving her a collar. Possibly also ears but that might be too out there and wild.
Are there any specific real world animals that had a big influence on any of the dragons’ designs? I’m a marine biologist and I study fish evolution and I’ve had ideas bouncing around in my head for lots of fish dragons since I saw Thuban and noticed he looks a bit like an oarfish. I’m currently very compelled by a snipe eel dragon, a mudskipper dragon, a sarcastic fringehead dragon, a ribbon eel dragon, and a wels catfish dragon :)
The original and "true" form of all dragons before their self image warps their anatomy is a featureless white worm. In theory they can "take" any features they see in animals they might encounter (or more commonly "second hand" growing features they see on other dragons around them)
There is no strict rule what features they can have, but the two big trends is a) they tend to gravitate towards animals they deem "cool" or admirable with features they would want to see on themselves, and b) Dragons largely dont have a sense of...realistic anatomy, so any creature they resemble should usually only look like a vague approximation of it.
Neither of these are strict rules. You can make a dragon that is nearly indistinguishable from a codfish, it just means that dragon is an exceptional eccentric whos self image is entirely consumed by being a codfish.
@ephemeral-little-waterlily woops I think you might be right.
Most of the dragons are not directly based on specific animals as much as specific genres of dragons in art. but they have ended up picking up some specific thinks as reference points for drawing them.
I started drawing Chuck recently with black stripes across his body loosely based on king+coral snakes, both simultaneously feel like they fit him.
Cowparlsey’s head is directly based on a cow mixed with a crocodile. Greytooth’s faces meanwhile are based on rhinoceros faces. Hogg is like…snake+mole+shark+pig
Belette’s design is based on ermines and mongooses and her name is literally just French for weasel. “Weasels” are the traditional enemy of the basilisk, and ichneumons (mongoose-like creatures) are a traditional enemy of dragons, it felt fitting for someone who antagonizes Chuck and the other dragons. She’s also meant to look like a unicorn and a crusty lap dog..
Who’s getting the aux chord: part two. These are unfortunately very fun to make with your own characters.

@bonanzatitanic @rhubarbss asking about my cool dragons in the alternate universe where they are crusty puny humans.
Chuck isn’t lying about “Corey”/Cowparsley asking him out first, but Chuck was dropping hints with the subtly of dropping a cinder block.
Debating if human Cowparsley is trans or not (and in what fashion) cause canonically most dragons have changed their sex at some point in their life (common dragon thing), but Cow's situation is he happened to be female in his past self that he hates to associate with, and became male in his current cutesier era. Feel like there is more then one way it could be spun but also he could very well be cisgender cause Cow's or most dragon's situation doesnt really match up being transgender in a human sense.
@chocolatechipkraken This is part of why i was debating making him transfem. His change from being a female to male dragon is partially the result of the human village he socializes with regularly assuming he was male and him just ending up..rolling with it. You could go literal with him turning female to male as a result of him being ftm, but the reason he's currently male as a dragon is effectively due to how others treat him and suppressing a part of himself.
Some people suggested human Cowparlsey be intersex, and while not opposed to that as an idea I dont think it specifically matches up to Cow's circumstances as a dragon. Dragons changing sex is fairly common, most of the dragons have changed sex before at some point if not several times. Cowparsley's circumstances are more relevant to him currently since it happened more recently and his change coincides with other major shifts in his self image.
I honestly think he works equally well as a cis guy, his reason for changing gender as a dragon wasnt really simlar to a human being transitioning, he just kinda "rolled with it".
who is Rebus? I saw their horse form in your pony post but what do they look like as a dragon?
The tag has a typo woops, I have yet to make a post about Rebis but they have appeared in a few posts. They are this weirdo.
Rebis is a shy largely reserved dragon, but their snake headed tail “Resbina” is a talkative and catty sycophant .
Rebis and Resbina does not have two brains (like most dragons their mind is concentrated in their “heart”), they are also not two seperate personalities or even have separate minds at all. Resbina is largely puppet who says all the things Rebis wants to but doesn’t want to say themself (but occasionally say things they didn’t intend to say out loud at all)
They are Pyrite’s mother and is probably the most attentive parents any of these dragons have ever had. Pyrite finds them annoying.

@frostybearpaws there’s a lot of hearsay on the topic of basilisks, but to their knowledge none of the dragons have had any run in with such an awful creature.
No one knows what or where basilisk came from, a brother of dragonkind, or some kind of mockery of it. While the power of dragons is limited only by the limits of their desires, imagination, and self worth, a basilisk’s power is limited by its needs. A dragon is strong because they believe themselves to grow unbreakable horns, breathe fire, and control the wind. Basilisks are strong because whatever they need to die around them will simply do so.

Thinking about Psi and Zeta in Emily's ( @deinocheirus ) Dragon setting A King of Worms....
Dragon thoughts ahead:
Zeta ("Zenith")
Zenith lives in a small city which has adopted her as a sort of cult icon. She never leaves, and mostly she lays around sleeping. Hobbies include eating livestock and getting into 'philosophical debates' with random people who come to talk to her. The town sells her eggs, and her mere presence generates a lot of tourism revenue, though visitors are required to sign a waiver. People can pay to watch her eat cows and sheep and sometimes, on special occasions, dead exotic animals obtained from Zoos. She doesn't eat pigs, (she thinks they're filthy) or goats (because they're ugly and stupid.)
Like canonical Zeta, she only speaks with the snake-like head on the end of her tail.
Psi ("Sweetpea")
Sweetpea was a problem dragon who became interested in humans the same way a child becomes fascinated watching ants go about their lives. He liked them a lot, but never quite realized that they were intelligent (or dangerous) creatures, thinking about them as a funny, interesting sort of animal. He became increasingly bold, encouraged by people leaving out food for him or playing with him, but proved to be a nuisance when he started eating dogs, cats, and chickens out of people's backyards.
Eventually, a Dragon-catcher was called in to deal with him. The particular people contacted filmed the event for a "Cops"-like reality TV show focusing on a team with a tamed dragon dealing with problem cases like his. The tamed dragon, gravely overestimating how dangerous he actually was based on his (kinda freaky) appearance, and ended up ripping off the top of his head. This WAS caught on camera. This did NOT kill him.
Watching him flop around with his face missing made some people feel a little bad. Instead of mercy killing him or letting him fend for himself, he was collected and taken to a shelter, where he was nursed back to health. However, because of the help he received and how severe his injury is, he ended up internalizing that he needs help in order to eat now, meaning he ended up healing in such a way that rendered him ACTUALLY incapable of feeding himself.
The incident left him with pretty bad amnesia, and the mass of 'worms' that sprouted from the initial wound eventually solidified into the three snakes that now make up his face. They all seem to remember different things and have different opinions, but none remembered his old name, so people just started calling him Sweetpea.
Bonus: his head before it was ripped in half
