“No offense, dude,” Sam grunts, sniffing in Bucky’s direction, “you stink. When was the last time you showered? Is your shower broken or something?”
Bucky lifts his arm to sniff at his armpit, retching as Sam ain’t wrong. “I don’t remember,” he sheepishly admits. “A week maybe?”
“Maybe?” lifting a brow Steve looks his friend up and down. Bucky’s hair is a fuzzy mess. He hasn’t shaved for at least two months. His clothes are covered in dirt, sweat, and something that looks like blood or ketchup and now he stopped showering too. “Buck, what is wrong with you?”
“May I put my two cents in?” Tony laughs as Bucky tugs at his dirty shirt. “Super-soldier 2 over there looks like a homeless lumberjack since his doll is gone.”
“Stark!” Bucky grits his teeth as Tony dared to mention you.
“Wait! You are love-sick?” Steve asks, carefully placing one hand onto his shoulder, regretting it as the fabric feels sticky under his touch. “Buck?”
“I messed up,” mumbling the words Bucky drops his gaze to the floor. “Y/N and I had a special arrangement. One night I said stupid things and now, she left town for three months and doesn’t even want me to call her.”
“Fuck, you are the secret boyfriend? Natasha mentioned a bad breakup was bugging Y/N, I never thought it was you,” shaking his head Sam can’t believe it was Bucky breaking your heart. “I don’t want to know what you told her.”
“She ran away, Wilson,” while Tony reminds Bucky it’s his fault you left town to visit your family, Steve shakes his head. “I don’t think I ever made a girl leave the state.”
Bucky can’t take it anymore. He storms out of the kitchen, not wanting to remember it was his fault you left town.
It’s worse enough he spends all day in your room, curled into a ball on your bed, one of your shirts clutched to his chest. “Buck, wait!”
“Save it, Steve.”
“Why didn’t you try to apologize and make things up to, Y/N?” the blonde grasps for Bucky’s arm, forces him to stop in his tracks. “Buck?”
“I tried, okay. I cooked for her, bought roses. Another time I invited her for dinner, but she refused to even look at me. You see, I tried to make amends and she ran. Y/N said it’s all too much and that she needs time away from me.”
“What exactly did you say to her, Buck? What did you do to break her heart?” Steve crosses his arms over his chest. Brows knitted together, he waits for an answer. “BUCK!”
“You see…that night…” Bucky begins to tell Steve everything. From the first night you spend together to the very last one…
“Bastard,” his best friend’s fist ends up breaking Bucky’s nose, taking him by surprise. “Do you have the slightest idea for how long everyone is rooting for you and Y/N? We all saw how much you mean to her only for you to throw it all away…”
“Stevie?” the brunette can only watch his friend storm off. “I’m sorry…”
“Again?” you narrow your eyes as your friend leads you toward a table, occupied by two men. “I told you to stop trying to set me up with one of your friends.”
“Y/N, I told you to get over a guy is to get under another,” rolling your eyes you try to explain to your friend that you are not the kind of woman fucking random guys to forget about your heartbreak.
“Tess, I appreciate you tried to help me forget about my ex but stop right there. I’m not going to fuck that guy to help you get laid,” she sighs, already walking toward the table to have dinner with her date.
“You are coming, right?” she looks over her shoulder, brows furrowed in a silent question. “Y/N, stop sulking like an angry child. A guy broke your heart, babe. It’s not the end of the world.”
“It’s not the end of the world,” repeating her words you nod to yourself. “You’re right, Tess. What Bucky said was hurtful and I will not forgive him so easily but, I will not fuck someone else to get over him.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t want to get over him…”
“Bucky, you need to take a shower and change clothing. It’s been another week, you stink,” poking his friend’s side with a fork Steve sighs deeply. He scrunches his nose up, retching as Bucky looks like he’s living in a dumpster.
“She’s going to find a better man, Stevie,” Bucky whines, slurring slightly. “I know she will. I want to smell like I feel.”
“Is he drunk?” eying Bucky warily Sam wonders why the brunette threatens to slip off his chair. “I thought you can’t get drunk.”
“Thor helped me,” the super-soldier mutters. “I wanted to numb my feelings but, now I miss her even more.”
“Jesus is our love-sick puppy still not better. Barnes, you stink. Move your ass into the showers, change clothing and shave. I don’t think you want Y/N to see you like that!” Tony mutters.
“Y/N?” Bucky slips off the chair to stumble toward Tony. “Did you see her? Stark are you hiding my doll from me?” he slurs, metal hand grasping for Tony’s jacket. “Tell me where she is!”
“Buck!” Steve must drag his friend off of Tony to keep him from killing the cocky billionaire. “I wanted to tell you. Y/N is back!”
“She’s back?” pushing both men out of his way Bucky runs toward the door, yelling your name, almost bumping into Thor’s wide chest as he dashes along the hallways. “Y/N! DOLL!”
“DOLL!” pressing his ear to your door Bucky listens closely. His brain is still foggy from the booze Thor gave him and he can barely think straight. All he can focus on is to get to you as fast as possible.
“What? Bucky?” you shriek, startled by Bucky’s fist ramming into your door. “James, you need to stop ramming your hand into my door.”
“Please open the door, baby doll,” he carefully knocks at your door. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ll open the door if you stop yelling, okay. I don’t like this one bit, James.”
“Okay.” Stepping away from your door Bucky holds his breath. “Doll—” he smiles dopily as you open the door. “Y/N, I’m so sorry. Please don’t leave me again. I—I don’t want to lose you.”
“Uh—Bucky?” looking your friend up and down you frown deeply. “Did you shower lately? I hate to tell you so, but you stink like a skunk. James, you look like you got under the bus, and someone shit on you.”
“I stink as you left me,” he grumbles, wrecking his brain to find the right words to express his feelings to you. “I’ve missed you so much. Had no time to shower.”
“I think you should have a shower, James. You look awful,” holding out his hand he gives you puppy dog eyes. You sigh, hating you are close to giving in. “Help me?”
“I will help you get into the showers and bring you to your room,” you grumble. “ I hope you know that you are not forgiven.”
“Shower, shave and stop tugging at my shirt,” you fight Bucky’s hands. He’s clinging to you, face buried in your neck as he tries to get you into the shower too. “Buck, you will shower alone.”
“I love showering with you,” he nuzzles your neck. “You always run your loofah over my skin and touch me gently. Doll, you are so soft and warm. I love you…”
“James Buchanan Barnes! Stop groping my ass,” pushing against his shoulders you grunt as he kneads your ass. “You lost the privilege to touch me.”
“No, please,” you find drunken Bucky adorable, but you will not give in to his advances. “I’ll behave.”
Bucky will have to make a lot up to you before you even consider calling him your friend again.
“Man, you look like a human being again,” Sam snickers as the brunette super-soldier walks into the kitchen the next morning. “I see someone got you into the showers.”
“Y/N, she helped me shower and into my room. I think she stayed the night but left before I woke,” Bucky watches you walk into the kitchen, greeting everyone with a soft smile.
“Morning, Sammy,” you give your friend a wink. “Did you miss me?”
“Sure, Y/N. We all have missed you dearly.”
“Especially your pasta,” Steve throws in.
“Morning doll,” awkwardly patting your shoulder Bucky tries to apologize once again. “I wanted to thank you for last night. I was kinda drunk.”
“You’re still a team member. I couldn’t let you rot in your own stink,” back to the defensive mode you walk toward the fridge. “You should take better care of yourself, James. I can’t always be around to help you.”
Bucky’s hope you forgave him shatters into pieces as you angrily glare at him before you turn your attention toward the others. “Doll…” he whispers sadly.
“Bucky, you need to stop lurking around my room. That’s creepy,” you just caught Bucky red-handed as he tried to put roses in front of your door. “James.” You sigh.
“You’re back for a month and barely talked to me,” he says, offering a cracked smile. There are bags under his eyes, he’s pale and looks thinner. “Please let me apologize again. This stupid old man loves you doll. He was just too stubborn to admit.”
“James, we can’t just go back to what we had. We were best friends and then…lovers,” you whisper sadly. “At least I think we were lovers.”
“Doll, I’m sorry for this friend with benefits arrangement,” Bucky takes a step toward you, grasping for your hand to place a soft kiss on your knuckles. “Can we at least try to be friends again?”
“I’ve missed my best friend,” voice barely above a whisper you glance at Bucky. “I just don’t know if I can trust you again.”
“If you give me the chance to prove I can be your friend and more,” he leans closer to kiss your forehead, “I’ll not let you down…”
