Steve's Birthday Calendar Day 1: Favorite Steve Ship

I adore a ton of Steve ships. SamSteve, Steggy, Thundershield, WonderCap, American Pi, Captain Hill, among others. But, yeah, it's gotta be my beloved AntShield.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make anything ahead of time, so how about an early WIP Wednesday? And maybe one day I'll actually finish this one, lol.

"Scott," the word merely a breath from Steve's lips as he pulls back, despite his body's reluctance. "What are we doing?"

“Kissing.” The brunet smirks, not missing a beat and kissing Steve again.

Smartass, he thinks fondly, his return of the kiss brief though his hold on the other man’s waist remained strong. “That’s not what I meant.”

“We can take this inside, if you want.”

November’s chill had been long forgotten by the captain, but he shivers from the nimble fingers playing at the nape of his neck and darkened eyes pulling him in. Once more, he gives in. He tastes a hint of sweetness and wine before he drags his lips away. “But we can’t.”

With a groan, Scott pulls out of his grasp and lands back against the brick wall behind him, taking his warmth with him. “God, you’re such a pain in the ass.”

“So I’ve been told.”

Scott laughs. It’s low and rough and makes Steve’s stomach flip. He resists the urge to kiss him again. Misses those hands being on him, even though they’re only inches away. Wonders if he could recreate the way the streetlight plays on Scott’s features.

He is in so much trouble.

Oh, boy, okay, lol.

Okay, I realize some of this probably seems contradictory, but let me explain.

From a canon perspective, I don't need it to be "real" or to happen, because I've had enough ships go canon only to be ruined and Marvel in particular is not very nice to or good with the canon ships I do like and I just like playing with dolls in the sandbox, lol. All I really wanted as far as canon was for them to be friends, which we only kinda sorta got because God forbid the MCU lets me Steve have anything nice for more than two seconds.

That said, I do think Scotty having a big ol' unrequited crush on Steve is totally canon. For the record, I don't think TPTB intended that reading, but then they let Paul Rudd loose and we got what we got, lol. I mean, seriously, Steve and Scott have barely ten minutes of screen time together and most of the time Scott's all breathless and starry-hearteyes, hyping him up at every opportunity, checking him out, feeling him up, defending the honor of his ass, what else am I to think other than he's got a massive, stupid crush that he's probably had since he was twelve? Like, Coulson and Steve I can read as awkward hero worship, but Scotty? No way. That dude wants to eat him.

But on top of Scott's obvious crush, I think they've got more in common than they might seem at first glance. They have similar moral compasses and know what it's like to be punished for following them. They both know what it's like to lose big chunks of time and parts of their life right along with it. They're earnest softies, but also have occasionally dry senses of humor. They both have a case of "I'm gonna suffer in silence and hope no one notices," though it manifests differently for each of them. They're also both really bad liars, lol.

I also like to think (or at least how I tend to write their dynamic) is a each-has-what-other-needs type of situation. In that, Scott has a cheerful, nurturing personality that I think Steve would benefit from being around and Steve is a steady and safe presence that Scott needs. Another thing I firmly believe, they would be the slowest of burns, because 1) Steve is the world's slowest snail (affectionate) and 2) Scott would be second-guessing it the whole time because surely he must be imagining it, there's just no way, until the day Steve suddenly turns around lays one on him... and probably for a little while after that, too. Unfortunately, I'm not great at finishing long fics, so I tend to write them when they're either already together or right at the cusp of it happening. It's a shame because they really are built to have a bunch of 100k slow burn fics for them.

I think I'm gonna cut it off there, because I've already taken too long to reply, I'm sorry about that. I also wasn't sure what kind of thoughts you wanted, so I just went with what came to mind first, lol. If there's anything specific you had in mind, feel free to let me know. :-)

Even without the serum’s help, Steve knew he’d always remember the moment he and Monica met.

Every little detail.  

The first time he saw her from across the room, throwing her head back with laughter. The way Darcy caught his not-so-subtle gawking and dragged him through the rest of the party to meet her. The butterflies that filled his stomach in a way he hadn’t felt in decades. Her dazzling smile and firm handshake. The way he was so engrossed in their conversation until he heard Peter shout, “Captains! Photo?” and the next thing he knew their arms were around each other. How his skin tingled at even that brief closeness.

And how he hoped she felt the same.

He didn’t have to wait long to find out the answer.

I wanna talk about SHIELD Agent Hope Van Dyne

...who joined to honor her mother (the same reason she took Janet’s name), even though her father begged her not to and to work at Pym Tech instead.

...who bonded with Sharon over the weight of legacies and all the whispers behind their backs from those who doubted that their places were rightfully earned. 

...who attended the SHIELD Academy alongside Maria, becoming fast friends (and soon, more than friends) and remaining each other’s favorite sparring partner long after. 

...who took a long time to trust Natasha (both because of Nat’s past and her own generally standoffish nature), but with time, they became a formidable team on the field and off were known for their dry verbal sparring.

...whose faith in SHIELD was shaken upon meeting Ava Starr and worked in secret to help her, only for their plans to be cut off by what turned out to be Hope’s final mission.

As the S.H.I.E.L.D. van drove off with a clawed up Pincer cuffed in the back, Shannon suddenly felt a presence behind her. “What I still don’t understand is why you called me. You could’ve dealt with him on your own.”

“If I had,” the Red Queen said, now standing at her side, “I’d probably be on my way to jail with that fraudulent cockroach.”

Her last two words came out in a growl that reminded Shannon that while the Queen’s actions had saved Cassandra and her father that bad blood still ran deep in her veins. After all, that was why she wanted to take out Pincer to begin with. “If anyone is going to take out Stinger, it’s going to be me,” she had said.

And yet…

“You know… we might have some room on the team.”

Shannon watched as Pym’s head turned to her, her typical sneer slack with shock, but her calculating eyes intent on the other woman. No doubt searching for any sign that this offer was no more than a cruelly dangled carrot, but Shannon, heir to Cap’s stubbornness as much as his shield, gazed right back, challenge lighting up her blue eyes.

Finally, the Queen let out a noise that sounded somewhere between a scoff and a chuckle. “Don’t get your hopes up, Carter.”

“I always do, Hope.”

Angie hurried to her mark and with the rise of the curtain all thoughts and worries fell away. She’d always known she was meant for this, for the stage, and the way her words and actions flowed so effortlessly proved that to her with each and every second.

Only to be tripped up ever so slightly when her eyes locked on another pair in the front row.

Peggy smiled as she mouthed, Hello, darling.

Sometimes Steve thought about how their lives had managed to become even stranger, more unstable than they were before.

Bouncing from motel to motel. Chasing leads where they could. Covert check-ins in Iowa, San Francisco, and Wakanda. Staying three, four, five steps ahead of Ross and his goons.

It was hard. It was exhausting.

And yet, as Steve laid awake - Sam sleeping soundly in his arms, Wanda and Nat in the room next door, and as certain as he could be that the others were safe, too - he couldn’t regret his choice.

They had each other.

That’s all that mattered.
