finally watched our flag means death. doodled this between seasons so it does not quite fit my current mood but nevertheless

Mary explaining to Stede what it feels like to be in love, and the line "I'd call those things love" being set over a wide shot of the entire crew is such a gorgeous moment.

The camera then pans in to show Stede and Ed laughing together, emphasising how it's about Stede realising he loves Ed. But by showing the whole crew first, it subtly reinforces the fact Stede genuinely loves his crew. They're undoubtedly his family too!

The moment when Stede said “his name is Ed” affected me so profoundly, in a way I didn’t even understand when I first saw it. I kept waking up in the middle of the night, thinking of it, not sure WHY it had gotten into my mind the way it had.

It’s coming out, yes, but in a subtle and profound way. There’s no declaration of abstract sexuality, no explanation, no further conversation or questioning. Mary doesn’t ask and Stede doesn’t answer. It’s simple. It’s deep. It doesn’t need more words.

His name is Ed.
