Stede's letter initially being read mockingly by the navy guys really does encapsulate how others have viewed Ed and Stede's relationship -
It's something of a joke, not particularly serious; it's diminished to simply being 'hot' for each other, nothing more than that.
Making it all the more significant when Ed steps in, kills those haters dead, and we hear Ed's voice speaking the lines Stede has written.
Though these are Stede's words, it's now abundantly clear that throughout it all, a part of Ed has always shared those same sentiments.
Finally, the opinions of others no longer matter. They can either get with it or get gone. Nothing can change the fact that Ed and Stede know their love could never disappear in an instant.
