This: Hucklerabbot Masquerade

But: Dr. Robby and retired military officer turned Dr. Abbot putting on the masquerade to find themselves in search of a third (which most people hear about through rumor and are cautioned to treat it as such).

Most of the plot is similar to the plot I presented in Farmboy Dennis Masquerade cont'd, with Trinity essentially forcing her friendship onto Dennis (who is later more receptive of it) after her parents hired him to fix up their house after he fixed up their carriage.

Also like in the other Maqerade au, when the invitation comes, Trinity does tease/tempt Dennis with the idea of becoming Abbot and Robby's third along with her Grimm brothers/fairy godmother spiel, which Dennis brushes off as just a rumor red in the face. Trinity then springs on the mask, his suit, the fact that she wrote a letter to his father saying that he may be needed an extra night, and that she has an extra carriage for him that will leave after she and her parents leave, and will have to return before they do so that there can be a cinderella-esque plot afoot.

He can't back out now, so he goes to the masquerade, and the first one he runs into a handsom (from what he can tell) stranger who is Abbot. He's charming, and flirtatious, and he makes Dennis red and awkward. They dance together and Dennis does his best to not step on any feet, especially the charming and handsome stranger's feet.

The stranger (who, again, is Abbot) leaves to get him a drink (also to direct Robby towards him). A second stranger (Robby) aproaches and asks him to dance with him. Dennis tries to decline, as he's still waiting for the other stranger, but he's weak-willed when it comes to attractive older men who are interested in him.

Again like in the other, Trinity finds him, congratulates him on not only dancing with one attractive guy, but two attractive guys, but it's time to bail as she and her parents are leaving soon. Both Robby and Abbot try to stop him, and he ends up leaving behind his mask somehow, so that Abbot and RObby can have it.

The next time that Dennis sees Trinity, she shoves a paper into his face, yelling freaking out about how he's going to be Robby and Abbot's third.

This is a continuation of specifically farmboy Dennis of my Hucklerobby Masquerade aus post (Moodboard by @thenameiscrow).

So, for most of his life, Dennis has spent pretty much all of his time working on his family's farm. Whether it's feeding the horses, mending fences, or of course, farming crop. The times he had left his house was it was his turn to help his father sell their crop. (his turn becomes more and more often until it's just him and maybe one older brother as his brothers get married and start life elsewhere.)

One time while in town, the carriage of a rich family breaks down, and Dennis fixes it. This happens to be the the Santos family, and they negotiate with Dennis' father to let him work for them part time. He end up working for the family every Tuesday and Thursday, and every other Friday, and what he does there is just fix up parts of their house and check what parts of their house needs to be fixed.

On his days there, Trinity essentially bothers her way into a friendship with him. Dennis is annoyed with it at first, but the longer they spend time together, the more endeared/understanding he is.

Now, sometimes, when the project he's working on in the house is running late (especially if the next day is the Friday he's working on) he stays the night. Maybe the room he's given to stay in has (secret?) access to Trinity's room and vice versa. The first time she used it, she scared the shit out of Dennis. (Her parents I don't think know about it, but she and her childhood friend made it their mission to find all of the secret passages in the house.)

(I also think that maybe there should be some tension between Trinity and her mother, especially in regards to how she acts. Idk if homophobia is going to be like a BIG issue, or is something that just exists, but if it something that just exists, maybe Trinity's lesbianism is a big point of contention/tension)

One one of the nights he's staying Thursday to Friday, he learns about the masquerade ball that's happening in two weeks. She begs him to go, mentions fairytales. Maybe she also makes a joke about the Grimm fairytales and how his life better not/might turn into one in addition to the one to her being a fairy godmother. He says no, and thinks he's in the clear, though he should know better. (It's Trinity, she's stubborn as all hell.)

Two weeks later, he's sleeping over again, and he's learned that Trinity has:

A) Sent a letter to his dad that Dennis may need to stay Friday night as well

B) Ordered a suit and mask for him that fit him suprisingly well

and C) painstakingly recreated the invitation to the masquerade so that he is able to attend.

Blah, blah, blah, he has to take a separate carriage so that Trinity's parents don't notice anything afoot and gives him a reason to need to leave early.

When he gets there, he tries to find Trinity, only to run into Robby (who Dennis doesn't know is Robby) in a clumsy, awkward moment that turns into a somewhat awkward ✨moment✨. They end up talking and dancing together and having a good time.

Santos ends up finding him in a moment he and Robby aren't together, telling him congrats on finding someone to spend his time with, but the unmasking is happening soon, and she knows she and her parents are leaving soon after, so he needs to pack it up.

When Robby comes back, Dennis gives him a rushed, half explanation, as he's backing towards the door. Robby is begging him to give him something, show his face. Dennis ends up, in a moment of panicked confusion (and also want) kissing Robby. Robby takes off the mask, but Dennis doesn't give him time to process his face as he runs to the exit.

On Tuesday, Trinity is shoving the paper in Dennis' face, because the famous Dr. Michael Robinovitch has submitted a drawing of the mask Dennis wore to the Masquerade, saying that someone had left it behind and would love to personally return it.

This is amazing! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming it's in reference to the Hucklerobby Masquerade aus post.

Now I have an inkling of more of a plot for idea one from that post, if you want to hear about it. Also would love it if this inspires people to write.

Hucklerobby masquerade au.

Maybe Dennis is a farmboy, and that Santos insists on being his fairy godmother, bc she's his rich-ish friend that got an invitation to a masquerade. He ends up running into Robby, and they have a wonderful time, but at somepoint he gets overwhelmed by Robby's affection, and it ends up being a sort of Cinderalla-esque situation.

Or maybe it's a mardi gras masquerade fundraiser that the hospital is putting on, and again, Santos insists on being his fairy godmother of sorts, bc this is his first work function/party. When he meets Robby in his get up, he knows immediatly that it's Robby, but it seems as though that Robby doesn't immediatly know that it's him. He gains some confidence in his costume, and kind of flirts with Robby, leading him to realize who he is.

this was born from me just wanting to put scar and grian in masks and have them dance really. behold how aus get born:

in the masquerade au, scar is a thief. he ends up dancing to blend in as he almost gets caught, stealing things here and there to make his costume. he's a conman, and a criminal, and as it turns out, a really good dancer.

grian can dance too, but not quite as easily adaptively as scar. because grian was taught in more formal settings. he doesn't exactly belong here, but he's pretending too.

there are two versions to this au, but basically, grian sneaks out to these masked dances for a bit of freedom, a bit of life. (a bit of rebellion, you could say.) he's running away from his stifling circumstances that he feels trapped in for a glimpse, a mere moment of something else. knowing he's never properly meant to have this.

the two versions we have are:

1 - the original idea - watchers:

grian was taken in by watchers when he was young ("given over" by his family), because he showed propensity for their kind of magic. it's a very unhealthy environment to be in, full of manipulation, abuse, strict rules and punishments, and moulding, trying to make grian into a perfect watcher fledging.

watchers are seen as these overseer figures, nearly-gods, with scary magic but also blessings to bestow. they're untouchable, revered, feared, respected. no one knows what goes on in their fortresses besides the very few rooms that are reserved for rare public events. (blessing-giving, passing judgements if it's in any case of relevancy or interest to the watchers, dancing balls...)

and since grian is one of them... he no longer gets a choice. there's no leaving once you're in. he's trapped, and alone, and... he feels stifled, and a bit hopeless about it all. wanting to remember who he used to be and cling to every sliver of humanity he can get his hands on. hence, sneaking out to masked dances! yay.

he uses his magic to shield himself from watcher view for a bit, but it's exhausting and he's not that good yet... but it works. for just an evening, every once in a while, it works. (his absence where he's meant to be, though, is a much harder thing to cover up...)

2- the second idea - nobility

grian is born in a wealthy, noble house. in that way, he's also untouchable and doesn't belong in with the commoners and their silly festivals and dances, but he's been here since birth and never really knew the other side of life. he has two younger siblings (gem and jimmy), and in this case, there's an immense pressure on him to marry well.

there's an expectation to carry on the name of the house. to keep them prosperous. to tie alliances, and hold onto power. he can't fail here.

well, any of them could do it, you know? if just one sibling marries to a well-off, equally noble and powerful house, the others can have a bit more leeway and freedom with their own matches/choices.

this means that if grian can marry a suitable, noble match, then his siblings will have more of a freedom to pick who they want to marry, instead of... well, whatever he is being pushed into. and gem has pearl, and jimmy has tango, and grian'd hate to take that away from them. besides... he doesn't have anyone himself... right?

in this version, it's gem who takes him out to the masquerade dances for the first time, instead of it being his desperate idea. she's been sneaking out to see pearl, and she just decides grian needs to unwind because he's a stressed-out ball of tension. (can you blame him? he hates every single person who tries to court him, they don't see him as a person but as something to own, as a means to obtain more wealth and power... but he has to pick from amongst them anyway. he has to.)

and so out he goes. and he meets this mysterious stranger. and oh, he's in trouble.

both options are really fun :3c

note about the dance itself! ly had this idea of making it a partner-swapping dance, where maybe couples start on opposite ends and are meant to find their way back to each other. it's now a lot more loose than it used to be, young people just have fun with it, but that's still what it signified once upon a time—if you miss a partner swap and stay with your current dance partner, it's supposed to mean something.

the first round with a partner is more distanced, in that the hands are in more respectful places. on shoulders, hovering around sides but not touching, that kind of thing. then if you miss the swap and stay, the hand comes to the waist. (this way it's also obvious to everyone else that you made a choice with your partner.)

and now... please think of grian's hold on scar tightening the tiniest bit and them not swapping partners... :3c and of scar's hand finding grian's waist.

think of grian who hasn't been touched with any sort of care or attentive bodily respect or warmth in... well. a long time. and here scar is, delivering. providing.

scar, who is really just a thief, finding someone interesting and unfamiliar in the dancing crowd, sparking his curiosity. he was just meant to hide for a bit in this dance but... well, who can blame him for indulging, when this mysterious birdie clearly wants him to stay a moment longer?

in this all, grian really needs someone who could see him and treat him as a real person... at least for an evening. at least for an hour. at least for a few minutes. anything. he'll take anything to break his suffocation.

even with a mask on, face and identity hidden, scar somehow makes him feel more seen during these sneak-out outings that he ever feels with his face and name bared. but it's so hard to let that bloom, when grian knows it's not meant to be in his reach, ever.

and so he keeps slinking away. leaving scar with hints that he's interested in romantically pursuing this, but also revealing none of himself. running, every single time, before any lines could truly be crossed. so clearly scared of something...
