This is apparently a lost Oneohtrix Point Never/Steve Hauschildt collab under the name “Masqves”; only one track ever came out of it, plus this performance. The track used to be available on OPN’s soundcloud but has since vanished. If anyone has a copy of this recording, please reach out. It’s called “Ocean of Tears”

MASQVES- OCEAN OF TEARS (UNRELEASED, 2008)

There was a show in Brooklyn at West Nile (now referred to just by its address, 285 Kent) a couple years ago that I'm still kicking myself for missing. That evening was notable for not only featuring the last Treetops set, but also a pair of one-off collaborations: the first between Mark McGuire and Taylor Richardson, the second between Steve Hauschildt and Daniel Lopatin. Sounds like a memorable night on the town, right?

The set by Lopatin and Hauschildt (performing under the name Masqves) is preserved, albeit in middling quality. What I didn't know until last week, though, is that the piece they debuted was also demoed and made available via the OPN soundcloud page. This is outstanding, truly--a great midpoint between the zones explored on Russian Mind and Critique of the Beautiful. Though Hauschildt's solo work is less interesting to me than that of his Emeralds brethren, I have to say that the rolling hills he's generating here are deeply evocative.

MASQVES

Having already appeared as Featured Artists or as Transmission contributors, Emeralds' Steve Hauschildt and Oneohtrix Point Never collaborate on the gorgeous, celestial 'Ocean of Tears' under the MASQVES name. Characteristically unforthcoming with information on the track, the duo evidently shared the compositional process by email, and this appears to be the extent of their work together.
