MASSIVE TORNADO HITS OKLAHOMA
Massive Tornado Hits Oklahoma
Massive Tornado Hits Oklahoma PBS
A massive tornado, estimated to be nearly two miles wide, devastated Moore, in southern Oklahoma City earlier today.
The tornado was rated as an F4-F5 (the latter being the highest rating a tornado can receive) with winds of up to 200 miles per hour.
The death toll currently stands at 51 but is still rising with many people still unaccounted for. Some of the victims include children from an elementary school that was directly in the tornado’s path. It struck at approximately 3:00pm before many of the children were home from school. Now, after midnight, many hopeful parents are still waiting outside the school for their still missing children.
The only warning given came approximately 16 minutes before the massive tornado struck, which lasted over half an hour on the ground. Currently, there are still many out searching for survivors in the rubble.
President Obama has signed a disaster declaration, and the National Guard has been called in for assistance.

VIDEO: Mapleton, Iowa introduced to violent, barn-razing tornado
The tornado that destroyed half a town: While nobody was seriously injured in last night's twister in Mapleton, Iowa, if buildings were considered people, it'd be a much different story. See, this tornado flattened a grain elevator. It also tore the roof off a high school and tipped a giant motor home in its side. And the hundreds-of-years-old trees that the town was named for? They were ripped out of the ground and forced into homes and cars, emphasizing the "ton" part of the name just as much as the "maple" part. "It was huge, just huge," said local attorney Thomas Mohrhauser. "It just kept getting bigger and bigger." source
