I'm pretty sure they never tell us how Eleanor and Max got together in the first place and this is the first time that it ocurred to me Mapleton might have something to do with it.

I mean, she sees Max in this sad state and offers her one of the girls. What if she did that with Eleanor once too and the two took such a liking for each other that it became a recurring thing? Considering Eleanor still had to pay for Max's time (or it would be a problem for her), it could be.

Mapleton tries to use the woman to draw information from Max, maybe she tried something similar using Max against Eleanor but she never really acomplished anything with it or maybe she just wanted to keep Eleanor happy because of the power she held. Mapleton is quite observant, I think it's possible she would notice Eleanor likes women too.
