Remembering the Mastersounds

The Mastersounds, led by Buddy and Monk Montgomery, never attained the level of success of groups led by Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey and Horace Silver, but they developed their own sound and a dedicated following. Perhaps being based on the West Coast and devoting too many albums to Broadway scores worked against them, but their following remains loyal. This Jazz Profile looks into the origins and history of the band.

Chico Hamilton and his band, along with the Mastersounds (a band led by Montgomery brothers Monk and Buddy; Wes made cameos on a few Mastersounds records) at Birdland in New York. Below is the New Yorker listing:
