I was wondering if anyone could help me with mastodon? I dont understand it. Do I have to sign up to each seperate instance? Can someone show me a screenshot of the UI so I know what I’m getting into?

Launching Alternate 40k RP Hub

Hey guys, I’ve seen that a lot of people are worried about where to go if Tumblr truly dies. I’ve started a Mastodon server to keep this community alive, and I invite you all to join me!

What is it? It's like a tiny Twitter for the RP community, connected to a bunch of other Twitters. It is not intended to replace Tumblr as the location for roleplaying, as each Mastodon post has a 500 character limit. Rather it is intended to be a place where people can interact OOC, post art and post meta without being worried about being flagged and randomly taken down.

How do I sign up? You go to https://warhammer40krp.masto.host/ and create an account. Your @ will be your username on this instance. The @warhammer40krp prefix lets people on other instances know where you come from. After you sign up you can fill out your profile and change your avatar, as you would on any other social media platform. You can make alternate accounts, but they don't work like Tumblr alts. Each one is counted as its own account.

What do I do here? Hang out with other folks! I’d like this to be essentially an easily read alternative to the Discord servers, which I know multiple people (including myself) have a hard time keeping track of due to the rapid pace of the chat. At first it will be pretty barren, I'll be completely honest.  Please feel free to reblog (retoot is the nomenclature) from other instances (as soon as they validate my request for cross referencing), and migrate posts from Tumblr. If you're reposting content then please include the original source as a link.

Ok I'm here. Now what? Just post as you normally would on Twitter, Tumblr, etc. Explore other instances. Have fun. Don't be a dick.

What are the rules/code of conduct? Presumably you've read the rules before signing up. If not, this is the short version: 1. No Nazis, racists, TERFs or other hate groups. Be cool to one another.   2. Tag your NSFW. There is a content tagging system on Mastodon that creates an automatic click through for NSFW/objectionable content. Use it. 3. If you're reposting from another website, include the original post in a link. I'm allowing reposting because of the relative lack of content, don't abuse this and act a fool.

So what's the plan now? I will be running and hosting this instance for three months (Until March 2019) in order to gauge interest and usage. If after three months traffic/usage is consistent, I will continue to host the instance. At that point I will put out a call for mods if necessary, and for  donations. I will be blunt; running this will cost me $11 per month. I'm willing to put in my own money to see if this works but if it does, I'd really appreciate if you could help out if you like the site. Comments, critiques and constructive criticism are welcome. I can't change the Mastodon API itself, but whatever I can do to make the instance itself better I will.
