do you see my cat? she and i took refuge in this italian ice shop while our building was testing the fire alarms a couple weeks ago
anyway, year 2, semester 2.
i’m working on a paper with my advisor and i really want to be done with it so we can move on to something else!! the goal was to get it done by the end of feb, but that’s in a week so uhhh
still gotta pass the abstract algebra qualifiers. still can’t stand group theory. but i’m making progress, and i think i’ll be fine.
i’m TAing for calc III again this semester, and it’s... actually going pretty well? last semester i was basically learning the material as it came, and it was sheer hell. but now it’s pretty familiar, and i’m actually getting the students to work in groups and present their work on the board, and it’s. amazing.
classes are good - i’m taking functional analysis and k-theory, and feeling pleasantly stimulated by both.
feeling kind of lonely in my department and my cohort. i want to branch out and meet grad students in other disciplines, but i’m not so sure where to start.
i hope the school year is treating you all well!
hey, how’s it going?
i finished my first year of grad school. things got pretty rough in the second semester due to a change in my meds but we made it through
i passed one qual (real analysis) and i’m pretty proud of that. master’s passed (aka phd failed) both parts of abstract algebra, but hey
summer research is going okay! we think we’re onto something.
i got invited to a conference in august, just to attend, thank god, because i have nothing to talk about... but with travel funding! i’m working out the details to make that happen.
Update?
Second-year, second-guessing, second-stressing.
Just kidding.
But my second year starts next Monday. I am teaching, taking some amazing classes (I... don't want to list them for fear of being identified), studying for two quals (#thirdtimesthecharm), and taking deep breaths.
Let's not forget the strides made by the first African American mathematics PhD recipients.
This is a cool resource for people in math phd programs right now. If you have other resources/tips to share, add them below!
