Lady Gaga released the music video for her track ‘Applause’ from her fourth studio album ‘ARTPOP’ on August 19, 2013 directed and shot by Inez & Vinoodh. From hanging from the ceiling to throwing and catching knives and walking a down a Galliano-inspired runway, Gaga’s character shows no fear in this video!
The makeup was done by Yadim Carranza while Shay Ashual did the hair and Michelle Saunders the manicure. She was styled by Brandon Maxwell.
We can see Gaga as her past self, lying on a mattress that represents her old life as a struggling go-go dancer in New York City.
Gaga rocks in fact two different bras in the scene. One of them, a fusion of leather and lace, is from Pretty Wild.
She wore it with black lace shorts from Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2013 Haute Couture collection.
The pair of boots, which were almost worn throughout the entire video, are the Alaïa Fall/Winter 2012 black leather lace-up platform ankle boots featuring buckle straps and lug soles.
Her other bra is her favorite Victoria’s Secret unlined black lace demi bra. She’s been wearing this piece on various candids and events during the era as well!
For her magical Houdini-inspired “Mad Hatter” scene, Gaga emerges out of a giant top hat wearing a top from Maison Margiela’s Fall/Winter 2013 Artisanal Haute Couture collection, and custom one-legged mirror and pin bodysuit and boots, fruit of collaboration with Natali Germanotta and Muto-Little Costumes.
“They loved the pins we used to hold the mirrors on while the glued dried that the pins ended up being part of the finished bodysuit.”
Margiela‘s reinterpretation of the bust of Chopin, is cut from a Calico cotton canvas base and embroidered with white marble cabochons at the neck, black ones on the vest and green ones on the jacket.
It took 93 hours to finish the gorgeous couture piece, using marble from Campan in France, cotton gabardine, cotton canvas and pongee silk lining.
Gaga emerges from the top of the stage, dressed in a black catsuit with organza bell sleeves from Milan-based fashion designer Mila Schön’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection.
Inez told MTV News the fashion show was all Gaga’s idea: “She always had it in her head that she wanted to do a fashion show, where she would be flying instead of walking. She always been incredibly inspired by fashion and its energy, so it felt extremely right to have that part of her life represented”.
Her white wings were designed and made by Los Angeles-based label Junker Designs. They’re made of deconstructed umbrellas, wood and bandages mounted on a WWII Swiss army backpack!
As always, I’ve got some info about her dancer’s fashion as well. They wore dancewear by Bloch and Rufskin.
While Charlie Le Mindu created the blonde hair headpieces, it was Theresa Dapra who custom-made the black horsehair headpieces. You can see one of them exclusively above!
Black muscle leggings and masks custom-made by Jacob Roanhaus.
The second black & white look consisted of another black catsuit from the aforementioned Mila Schön collection and white inflatable parachute silk coat, a custom creation by Gareth Pugh.
Gareth’s most recently shown inflatable creations, were the monochrome striped nylon dresses from the Spring/Summer 2012 runway, featuring a tiny ventilator with built in battery. Larger than life but weighs next to nothing.
Her black patent pointed-toe lace-up ankle booties here are the Seduce-1020 by Pleaser.
Locked in a thorn cage as a Andy Warhol-inspired distressed Marilyn, Gaga wears another one-of-a-kind conceptual creation.
The bespoke skeletal corset and white silk skirt with raw hem were custom-made for her by Olivier Theyskens.
She completed her look with the Pleaser Delight-1020 patent white platform ankle boots.
Inspired by Botticelli’s 1486 painting “Nascita di Venere”, depicting the goddess Venus having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, during the next scene, Gaga appears in a seashell bikini and cascading curly hair.
The bra, earring and ivory thong, embellished with seashells and fresh flowers, are custom Perry Meek.
Her mask is custom-made for the video by House of Lavande, using vintage earrings on antique flip-up mirrors.
Another look. Another custom creation: The glove-kini! “That’s Brandon Maxwell, her fashion director, that had that made. The song’s called “Applause”. There had to be hands”, Inez told MTV News when asked about this scene.
The black bra, briefs, neckpiece and gloves with fringed fingertips, were custom created for Gaga by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
You may remember the black leather choker and glove bra from Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Fall/Winter 2011 runway, which this outfit is based on.
No matter what it takes, she’ll get back onstage.
Gaga dons a beautiful ethereal tulle gown with sequin embellished neckline, hand-embroidered gold flowers on the sleeves and full pleated skirt with matching metallic cut-out wooden platform boots, the finale number from John Galliano’s Fall/Winter 2009 theatrical winter wonderland runway, inspired by Balkan folklore.
Her body chain, which actually were a few bras, is custom Mathieu Mirano made of scorched duct tape discs, burned with a blow torch, and adorned with safety pins, coins and crystals.
The look was crowned with the Italian jewelry label Maison Halaby’s Fall/Winter 2013 Damien necklace worn as headpiece.
The oversized leg holding a flower bouquet was custom-made by Marla Weinhoff Studio and the headpieces for the dancers by Luke Brooks.
BACK IN TIME: LADY GAGA DEBUTS “APPLAUSE” IN CUSTOM MATHIEU MIRANO PAPER LOOK
Lady Gaga's appearance on Good Morning America back in 2013 left her fans, the paps, and everyone else’s tongues wagging. To debut the music video of the first “ARTPOP” single titled “Applause”, Gaga arrived as a vision in white.
Styling by Brandon Maxwell, respectively.
Designed in collaboration with Mathieu Mirano who made his debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York during the Fall 2012 season, the dress was equal parts edgy, and sophisticated.
Created from warped white paper and comprised of a jacket, bra, panty and gloves, it was simply perfect for the occasion. “I was approached by Lady Gaga’s team to create custom pieces for her. Lady Gaga has given me the chance to take my creativity to the next level- in a way that is different from what I create for my seasonal collections. You actually can’t rip this paper, which is why we chose it for her. It’s so resistant to how much pressure can be put on it” Mirano says.
Her visor is from Isabell Yalda Hellysaz’ Fall/Winter 2012 “Antidote” collection.
Taupe suede platform lace-up ankle boots with buckled ankle straps and lug soles from Alaïa‘s Fall/Winter 2012 collection completed the look.
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett performed for a selected crowd at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall on July 28, 2014. The special aired on October 24 on PBS as part of their Arts Fall Festival 2014 Great Performances series.
She was styled by the incomparable Brandon Maxwell. Hair by Frederic Aspiras and makeup by Sarah Nicole Tanno, respectively.
For the red carpet and ‘Nature Boy’ opening performance, Gaga donned a custom Alon Livné black silk dolman sleeve caftan gown with silver crystal embroidery, based on a design from the Israeli designer’s Fall/Winter 2014 lookbook.
The look was styled with antiqued gold BaubleBar Xena crystal drop earrings...
...which were swapped for these Kenneth Jay Lane’s crystal leaf drop earrings on stage.
She completed the look with the Brian Atwood Sasha black velvet criss-cross platform sandals.
For ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘Cheek to Cheek’ the songstress wore another enchanting caftan. This bronze, shimmering beauty was designed by Michael Costello exclusively for the Jazz special.
Gaga’s dramatic fringed gold headpiece with crystals is created by Cassouto for Alon Livné’s aforementioned collection.
Her statement crystal chandelier earrings date back to the 1960s and are signed by Hattie Carnegie!
Stuart Weitzman designed her barely-there Nudist sandals in the color “Petrol Aurora”.
My favorite look is the one Gaga wore during ‘I Won’t Dance’ with Tony. This black lace number is custom-made by Valentino, based on a design from the Spring/Summer 2014 Haute Couture collection.
Her headpiece was created by The Devoted Milliner, one of Australia’s leading fashion milliners. “I remember listening to only Gaga during the week I was constructing this wild piece for her”, the director and designer of the label, Cindy Vogels, shared with us.
The bespoke feathered piece was a a last-minute addition to a selection of work requested by Gaga’s fashion team.
The ring, she wears on her index finger, is nOir Jewelry’s rhodium modernist spiral ring.
Her black & silver crystal pavé pumps with starburst detail on the toe are vintage 1969 Stuart Weitzman for Martinique.
For ‘Goody Goody’, our girl sat on a giant rocking chair while looking fabulous in the satin watteau cocktail dress in cyclamen-colored gazar from Stéphane Rolland’s 2014 Prêt-à-Porter capsule collection.
The look was styled with Gladys Tamez Millinery Bianca felt velour hat featuring molded crown, extra large flat brim, and grosgrain ribbon trim (Gaga had hers customized with a cut-out for her eye to peek out)...
...the Cornelia James Melissa opera-length black velvet opera gloves...
...and Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandals in textured black.
For the iconic ‘Bang Bang’ performance, Gaga’s team asked New York-based leather maker David Samuel Menkes to create this fiery red biker jumpsuit with belted waist and silver-tone hardware.
Her boots are Giuseppe Zanotti’s Fall/Winter 2014 quilted leather double zip biker moto boots in red.
Then Gaga sang ‘Lush Life’ in a fabulous pleated silver metallic lame gown with embroidered starburst detail on the waist - a custom-made couture creation by Roberto Cavalli based on the dress presented on his Fall/Winter 2005 collection.
For the ‘Let’s Face The Music and Dance’ performance, Gaga took the stage in an azure-blue caftan with batwing sleeves and bejeweled waist detail, custom-made by NYC-based Mathieu Mirano creation.
Her oriental cuff-style Hung Up hand-made gold-plated brass earrings embellished with Swarovski crystals in grey & white are Erickson Beamon!
The matching Clarita suede sandals by Alexandre Birman with ankle-tie and knotted strap on the front complemented the look perfectly.
Finally, the ‘But Beautiful’ and ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)’ performance. Gaga wore the Grapefruit Gelato blush satin caftan from Michael Costello’s Project Runway “All Stars” collection.
The look was styled with a fabulous crystal and moonstone crown from Celia Kritharioti’s Fall/Winter 2013 Haute Couture collection...
... and a pair of crystal-embellished blush pink satin Swirly sandals from Nicholas Kirkwood’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection.
BACK IN TIME: LADY GAGA IN WALDRIP, MATHIEU MIRANO, SAINT LAURENT & MORDEKAI
On her first post-hip surgery pictures shot by Terry Richardson during a private event in New York City on March 11, 2013 we can see that Lady Gaga still maintained to look absolutely fashionable while being coveted to her custom Mordekai 24-karat gold wheelchair.
Let’s talk about the outfit first. Lady Gaga wears blush long sleeve wrap gown from Waldrip’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection, with matching Mathieu Mirano Fall/Winter 2013 fur cropped jacket.

New York-born Mathieu Mirano is one of the youngest designers showing at New York Fashion Week. His Fall/Winter 2013 collection, that is “all about classic silhouettes executed in a new way”, was also his third collection.
Her comfortable shoes are the Saint Laurent bi-color perforated leather lace-up brogues.
