How to ace your next maths test
Many people struggle with maths tests, and it’s easy to lose hope by telling yourself that you’re ‘just not made for maths’. But as we approach the middle of the school year, I thought that I’d write a post to help people with difficulties in maths, sharing how I prepare for my maths tests. Maths has always been one of my favourite subjects, so if I can help at least one person appreciate the subject more, it would make me incredibly happy :)
In Class:
Listen to your teacher, don’t chat with your friends, as tempting as it may be. There’s a reason why the quiet people in class who sit at the front get the best grades! They’re attentive in class and assimilate the content during school hours, which reduces the amount of work they have to do at home, making studying for the tests much more manageable.
Take good notes, make sure that they’re legible and pleasant to read. You don’t have to make them all fancy, with colours and highlighters - as long as your notes are neat, it’ll be so much easier for you to revise from them later on. Also, by taking time to make proper notes, you’ll be subconsciously learning the information!
Actively learn during class time, make sure you understand all the content when you’re in school. Try to make it all make sense; maths is extremely logical, but you will need to take the time to understand it.
Consistency is key, as it is for everything. Being attentive and concentrating in class for just a few days will not be enough for you to succeed in maths. As my teacher last year loved to say, it’s an extremely accumulative subject, meaning that everything you learn now will be the base of what you learn next - so the earlier you start, the better!
At Home:
Make sure you understand all the notions and go over your class notes as soon as possible, just by reading over them when you get home. By doing this, your mind will keep processing the content, and if you don’t understand something, it’ll become more obvious.
Do exercises! Exercises are literally the best thing you can do to improve in maths. You don’t need to do a hundred, just do a few that are very different from one another, so that you challenge your brain while studying for the test. Your teacher might have given you exercises, in which case DO THEM and learn exactly how to solve them, because the test is never too different from what your teacher assigns you. Otherwise, you can easily find exercises from your textbook or on the internet.
Choose exercises that tackle the notion from different points of view. View it like a battle - you need to know your enemy from all different aspects! It’s the same for maths; you have to be able to do any type of exercise. (Just don’t look at maths as being your enemy haha) Besides, by choosing different types of exercises, you’re minimising the probability of you falling on an exercise that you’re completely unfamiliar with on the test, which will allow you to get through it faster and with more accuracy.
Try doing tests covering the same topic at home. By this, I mean finding a test that another teacher would have made, maybe on the internet, and going through the exercises to make sure you know everything. I do this a lot while preparing for my tests, and it’s really very helpful. If you can do your teacher’s exercises and another teacher’s test, you’re definitely well prepared.
Make flashcards or notes with the main ideas and properties of the lesson. It helps with making the important ideas stand out, and you’ll be able to study more effectively. The idea is to not copy out all your notes, but to select the information that will be vital for the test. Here’s a small tip for these: when making these flashcards/notes, space out the info, so that your brain can properly process what to remember.
Don’t start revising too late! Start at least a week before your test, so that you have enough time to go over your notes, figure out what you understand and don’t, ask questions, and do exercises. Note: this is for a test, not an exam. If you have an exam coming up, I’d recommend starting at least a month in advance.
If you encounter difficulties while studying:
Do not hesitate to ask questions. This could be to your teacher, your classmates, or even people in higher classes. Don’t be scared of judgement - as Confucius says: “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.” It’s so true, and you’re in school to learn, not to look clever! If you knew everything perfectly from the start, you wouldn’t have to go to school.
Scour the internet for help. I’m pretty sure Khan Academy has helped me through more that 95% of my tests, and YouTube never fails if you can’t find something on KA (which is unlikely, but I’m still throwing that out there).
Ask me questions! Maths is one of my favourite subjects, so if you ever run into difficulties, I’d be more than happy to help out :)
During the test:
Do not stress out! Clearly this is easier said than done, but it’s so important when it comes to doing well on a test, as stress can be extremely distracting and in consequence, detrimental to your results (I’ll do a post on stress later on). Take deep breaths, count to 100, sip on water - do anything that can distract you from your stress.
Remember that your teacher wants you to do well. I can’t think of one teacher that would actually want their student to fail (and if they do they should not be a teacher). They’re your biggest cheerleader, because if you do well, it means that they’ve done a good job! Thinking of that definitely makes the whole test process seem a lot less daunting.
While doing the test, think about which parts of your lesson can be applied, and what you did in class to tackle them. If you’ve studied and revised well, this puts you in a familiar zone, and it should be much easier to get through the test.
Tell yourself that you’re a genius and you will be one. This is quite a funny one and it’s all about changing your mentality while facing the test. If you make yourself feel confident about your knowledge before the test, you will instantly perform better. It’s all about what is going on in your head! (This tip actually helped me score a 100% on one of my maths tests)
It’s a long post but I hope that it helped at least one person out there! If it has, please let me know because it would make me so flipping excited ^^

Im writing a math test tomorrow Im so screwed up because I hadn't understood a thing until tonight and I hope I will remember them tomorrow and I'm so nervous
6 years after graduation, I'm still haunted by nightmares of Maths tests.
Okay, this bitch, lets call her... Mabel.
Mabel and I share a maths class.
Mabel is a genius/suckup/nerd, whatever. She's doing higher stuff than the rest of the class because she's so high and mighty. When she gets a question right, she does this:
Maybe not quite like that, but it's still pretty accurate.
thinking about her future blah blah good on her for challenging herself whatever. So I sit there all
GO YOU. YOUR LIFE NOW HAS MEANING.
So today, after the test (Mabel got the same one, it should've been a breeze for her! But nooooo, after the teacher checked it at the end of the class, hers only - special treatment, jus sayin' - she said "Oh no! I had a mind blank!" HAHAAAA, now you know how it FEELS.), which was dreadful, and I'm pretty sure that our emotionless monotone evil teacher took great joy from, we as per usual discussed our hate for him and it the next period.
Whiiiiiiiiiiiiichhhh was PE - We're doing tennis.
"omg what did you get for question three omg i failed omg i'm quitting school what a bitch omfg why does he hate us ahhh omg omg blah blah blah"
Mabel, in her i'm-the-best-in-the-class-anyway-and-everyone-should-look-up-to-me-yet-still-feel-sorry-for-me voice, and accompanied with her equally as annoying leer, "He even said I did shit on the test, so we're probably going to do a retest"
YOU? Oh hell no. What has become of this world. His world must have died. This must be a new feeling for you, no?
I don't like her.
I really don't.
Alex and I then proceeded to pretend the ball was Mabel, and whack it across the court as hard as we could, not giving a fuck in the world whether we got it in or not, because we aren't like her, and not everything needs to be perfect.
So how was your day?
