What are some tips for expanding your vocabulary and keeping learning fun during times that you are not in school? I don't get any aid and can't afford to pay for school on my own, but I want to be able to still learn while I am saving up for college courses. Thank you so much in advance for your time!
While I am studying, I feel like the most valuable things I have learnt have been things that I have learnt outside of my formal studies. I think learning on your own is such an important thing. As you do plan to study, it’s especially important that you keep learning! You don’t want to get to college and find that your brain is unaccustomed to learning anymore! I found that myself when I took a semester off! It was only six months, but wow, it took me a while to get used to learning again, as I didn’t really do too much active learning in that time.
Vocabulary is something I try to work on as I don’t use a lot of the words I know in everyday conversation because of people telling me to not use “big words” when I was younger. By younger, I mean 16/17!
I’m not sure where you live, but I’m in Australia and we don’t have a vocabulary component to exit exams. One thing I tend to do on occasion is to look over SAT words. It’s worth doing that on occasion and there are so many resources available online for free. I recommend flash cards. I love paper flash cards, but for native language vocabulary cards, digital is probably the best option. Check out ANKI and find some SAT Vocab card sets. ANKI does spaced repetition, so it’s probably the best way to integrate the words into your active vocabulary.
Another option, though slower, is to choose a word a day and try to use it in a sentence through the day. I’ve never done this as I tend to get carried away, but I do sometimes write a small list of words on a sticky note and try to use them in an essay or homework.
Another thing I do is to learn words through reading. When I come across words that are interesting or unfamiliar, I jot them down in a little notebook with a basic definition and sometimes where I got the word. My notebooks are packed away at the moment, or I’d snap a picture of them!
As for keeping learning fun on your own, I think structure is important. I’m on holidays at the moment, but I’m actively trying to learn. I’m working on my french vocabulary (I don’t study it, so it’s something I’m always studying alone) and making sure to do it regularly. It sounds counter-intuitive, but regularly working on it means I’m improving, and that is fun. I use apps and sites that make learning enjoyable, like Memrise. Memrise actually have an English vocabulary section, so it might be worth trying that. Set goals for yourself to make learning fun, and reward yourself when you meet those goals. Love what you’re doing. Find books you enjoy, and read them. Make learning an adventure, because learning is SO exciting and I don’t think we get excited enough about it, especially when we are in structured programs at colleges and universities. If you keep your love of learning, you have a huge advantage over those of us who have become bitter from too many years of ridiculous assignments.
Thanks for asking me, and I hope I’ve helped! Let me know how you go! GOOD LUCK!
