Idols x Social network : Where does a fan take his information?
“idols entertainment as much evolved along with new technology”
During the morning musume Era, there was no such things as social network or smartphones. Veteran idol fans got through their fandom thanks to music show and variety only. Now, we are overwhelmed by information, in direct access and taking many shapes. Sometime some information have more value than others. It is important to sort things out in order to not be saturated.
Fans have their preference to get their daily basis of idol news, but what if they were actually missing some hidden spots on the internet that can bring them more insight than they could ever imagine? This is the purpose of this article : to introduce those SNS (social network system), with their perks and also defaults.
“Google+, in his prime, was the quickest gateway to 48group update”
If you were wondering why G+ had so many idols account, it simply because it was a collaboration between Google japan and AKS. You could even have the whole Request hour ( 4 concert!) and the sousenkyo on live streaming for free! Most popular idol had their 500 comments limit reached in few minutes and get more than 5000~6000 +1 (equivalent of facebook “likes”) on each of their post. AKS had an exclusive social network to reach out their fans, and Google had idols promote their SNS and expand.
Unfortunately, G+ never took off in popularity, crushed by Facebook domination. Fans created accounts just to suscribe to their idols profile but didn’t use G+ to interact with each other, leading to a one sided, and incomplete, SNS. G+ hit the nail of the coffin when even idols update diminished because of lack of time or them taking alternatives. Google+ still has the perks of a personalized timeline, but clearly lack interaction.
In same type we have 755, another SNS collaboration (suffering the same default as G+)

“Tumblr speciality lies in HD image sharing, which is nice”
Our very own tumblr. This intuitive, blog oriented social network has matured into an efficient tool in picture reblog/sharing, as well as homeland of Gif. For example, this is where you get most of magazine photoshoot like BUBKA, BOMB, Friday, or even photobook. Thanks to the diversity of his timeline, it redirects you to stuff you like and you can discover new things.
However, the reblog/ask box system is not as effective as other SNS. Sometime the only way to interact is to reblog the post and add your own line, creating a wall of text soon irritating to read. The ask box only works if the person agree to answer. People would say this is part of tumblr spirit and personality, but in my case i consider it a restriction.
A double edged sword as well, if you are a tumblr user, if you’re not specialized in picture/Gif, your text post can easily sunk into the mass of information. On tumblr, you scroll your timeline, you like, you reblog. If your post doesn’t trend and snowball, there’s huge chance that it fall in oblivion quickly. A text can’t keep up the pace. You should probably redirect to Blogger or Wordpress to maintain thoughtful post integrity.
If you want a more specific member oriented tumblr type, there is instagram.

It’s not wordpress per se. But more the blogs using this tool. They are a few because running a news site is extremely weary and request a lot of commitment. Not only you need search for information, you have to process it. Sometime the reward is worth, because having daily update win the loyalty of fans and they come back every day, like AKB Wrap-up (nice design but inactive). A still active news site i can think of and recommend is AKB Daily . If you don’t have the time to search for information, this SNS is what you’re looking for. Fan interaction depends of the owner of the news site. If it’s popular and updated daily, fans can discuss hot topic on commentary section.
A special case, is Ameblog. The sakamichies series policy is to condense all information of their roster ( with few exceptions) on their official site. For example, Keyakizaka official website is the only place you get regular update from members, boosting idol content from 2.5 to 4.5. Not stupid if you want to control what your idols are writing.

“A social network that embodies our generation : Quick paced”
People get information instantly. In a way, we become like this quick-paced information. Thinking about what we’re going to write is too slow. Instead of thinking, we’re “tweeting” what’s on our mind. To have quick post like this makes the interaction easier. You just need 3-5 seconds to read the information, and the answer comes as quickly. This is the most convenient when on your smartphone. When you get reply and interaction, you feel being listened to, and it makes you feel happy. The more interaction you get, the happier you become. It’s now common to see social network as highly addictive.
Not only that, but your account is “supposed” anonymous. Many people create fan account, their alias of the real life. You can enjoy your fandom without being worred of having your real you being showcased. People logically tend to enter an SNS when this one has a large fanbase, and since twitter is popular and intuitive to use, this is one of the biggest.
Idols understood that and more of them create their twitter account. You both get interaction with the fanbase and now with the girls themselves. You also target a young range of fans. When used properly, member like Sasshi can reach up to 1 million followers, giving her a lot of visibility and influence.
Twitter is a must have in the idol fandom. it easy replace the old fashioned #IRC.

Facebook is used with your true identity; this is the social network you use when you want to keep contact with family and friend in real life. And sometime you don’t want people to know you like this hobby or this one, thus explaining no domination of this SNS over others.
Facebook works in fanpage. You like one of these, and a part of the newsfeed appear in your timeline. It’s very convenient as almost everyone has a facebook account. Huge fanbases have developed around facebook like the taiwanese and the Indonesian fanbase. Since facebook fanpage are fan powered, the content depend of the scale of the fanpage. A double edged sword, because facebook is so big you can easily mix idol fandom with other hobbys, and information can escape.
The quality of idol content is poor. It is mostly reblog from other SNS. If you are an experienced fan, you might look elsewhere.

“Stage48 is the biggest foreign 48group community”
It’s the opposite of twitter. It’s slow. It’s rough. You are also overwhelmed by information everywhere. It’s not intuitive at all because users are undisciplined, continuing debate on thread that are out of topic. Stage48 is so big there’s thread with 1000 pages (mayu’s) and others completely forsaken.Sometime it can lead you to troll post or stupid catfight between user trying to win an argument. Fo those reasons, this forum has developed a bad reputation because of the poor quality of posts.
However. If you do the effort, this is the best place to share opinions and thoughtful post about idols. In this forum, you take your time thinking. You are building a reasoning. By interacting with others, your point of view become richer, more wise. You can read stories from people with lot of experience. You actually build a critic.
On twitter, tumblr or instagram, you’re a spectator. You let things pass (scroll in that case) until you see a content you like, you fav it and you move on. It’s typical of our generation; we’re being passive, almost lazy. It’s important to make your opinion and have a broader look. It helps you to have a better understanding of idols.
Big counterpart, is that Stage48 is very time consuming due to the intense searching of interesting thread. Quite hard to handle on a phone if you don’t use tapatalk software.

Video platform are the biggest source of idol content, stepping beyond standards like television and radio. it’s even bigger for us because foreigners don’t have easy access to japanese television. Also, idol is about music, therefore music video. I personally started my fandom thanks to youtube playlist of AKbingo! and many are in the same case. We even had our own specific video platform, former ancestor called Sub48 or Vid48. But hard to survive with all copyright claims.
The value is outstanding. Variety show are scripted, edited, produced by professionals. It means it shows the best of your idols, episode you can learn the most of them. Even better, Fans gather best moments of those same episodes to make a best of the best. it can lead to this.
We don’t particulary talk on youtube comment section, but we sure use content from youtube, post it on twitter or forum to talk about it, so it’s not a default. Youtube is the most intuitive and easy to access, thus explaining the perfect score in characteristic.

“Enter the new generation”
It’s pretty new. And simple : you watch a live streaming of your favourite idol talking about various topic. You really get deep in the idol intimacy, breaking the boundary of youtube “allowed to broadcast” policy, in showroom you have control of topic talked on in real time. It is almost scary because idols are exposed of bad behavior from fans. Not sure if popular idol have the time to be involved with showroom, but this alternative to Youtube can help new idol generation to reach new fans, and this is something i will always encourage. Okada Nana showroom is the best example.
For foreign fans, jetlag can be a problem, as well as langage barrier. It is also very time consuming.

In foreign fandom we are as much enthusiast as japanese fandom. We have same tools available on internet. But we just don’t have the same scale. “Matome” means “wrap up” in japanese ; simply put those are japanese news site, AKB Times being the biggest of all.
It is the most updated, most dynamic and most constructed tool available to search for AKB group information. this is THE source. Not only that, it is powered by fans themselves so you have hundreds of comments from japanese fans that discuss fresh AKB news. You are able to immerge yourself in the core of the fandom, and it is truly a game changer. You don’t have to search for information, the matome does it for you, selecting the most relevant topic to know. Troll topic are not processed.
If you have basics of japanese grammar, you can manage read those matome with rikaikun a very useful plug-in that translates you automatically kanjis. In the meantime you train your own japanese! This is very rewarding, but unfortunately time consuming if you have to translate everything.

CONCLUSION
The whole range of tool available for the fan makes the whole idol experience pretty unique. The smart adequacy between social networks, taking only the best out of them can enhance your search for information tenfold. You can also adapt it to your taste; if you are more of a lurker, tumblr is made for you, if you like to share and talk with people, you go on stage48. If you’re in a hurry, Twitter is the best option. All in all, there’s no better social network than others, just tools that complete each other. Find your own way!
I want to point out that this article is about the tools. But the idol experience is also about living the moment. This feeling of plentiness can’t replace a concert, a meeting with fellow fans or an handshake with your favourite. SNS are useful but won’t never replace your memories. So if you have the opportunity, go to Japan! And live the true experience.

About [Member Produce]
For the latest single’s release events, they did member produced events
I did a lot a lot of consultations and was allowed to do it.
The start of it all was [Kawamuu].
I asked the members what they thought about current conditions in Angerme
What they want us to work harder at, and so on
[Kawamuu] sent me a really long message in return.
I was really saved by her words.
[Kawamuu] just joined recently but
The fact she’s thinking of us like that made me really happy.
I couldn’t deny that release events were getting stagnant with the established format.
They should be a chance for even people who don’t know Angerme to see us and think we’re fun.
While treasuring the guests who always come for us
It’s an ideal chance to have people besides them see Angerme.
I always thought we could have a lot of fun thinking of and directing them ourselves.
[Kawamuu] said,
“Someday, I’d like to try to do member produced release events”
I thought, I want to do that as soon as possible.
I consulted with a lot of people, and got the okay.
Up until now for release events
The manager came up with the setlist and we had a script for the MCs
The members did events according to that.
When I decided my graduation, I thought, without the members doing anything, the group as a whole will keep moving with no connection to the members individual growth.
It was a really difficult thing but, through the member produced events, what I was testing was
How do they think of Angerme? I really wanted to know.
It was the perfect chance to set up Angerme exactly as they want it.
I was really looking forward to how each member would portray Angerme.
I hoped it would be a chance for the members to grow.
Really, this time, there were a lot of places we learned and improved on.
Things that the managers had helped us with up until then
We figured them out together as Angerme.
The members besides me have each become capable on their own.
It was an amazing opportunity.
I hope this can be useful to Angerme’s future.
I’ve been wanting to tell this story about [Kawamuu], so
I’m glad I can finally talk about her.

I couldn’t tell her directly, so I just kept looking over at her.

Recently Kawamuu is really working hard, and Kamiko thinks she’s amazing.
There are things that are hard to say to seniors, but Kawamuu will plainly say, “This may be rude, but I think this aspect of the current ANGERME is no good.”

(At this point this thread delves into historical references to the Bakumatsu period, the period of Japanese history where political power transferred from the Shogunate (feudal military rule basically) back to the emperor, leading to the Meiji Restoration, when Japan became considerably modernized.
There were many conflicting factions and important figures during this time, but the one relevant to this thread is Sakamoto Ryoma a samurai from Tosa (historical name of Kochi), the same area Kawamuu is from. Sakamoto was a leader in the movement to restore the Emperor, and an admirer of democratic principles who dreamed of a more progressive future for Japan.
As a side note, a lot of Japanese media takes inspiration from this period, perhaps most famously Gintama. But I don’t think you’ll learn much about history watching Gintama.)
