Thursday, August 10: Kill II This, “Kill Your Gods”

After replacing most of its lineup, Kill II This put out a second album that offered a little experimentation while bearing the burden of not only trying to find a place as an ostensibly metal band in the late ‘90s, but also as an outfit emerging during British metal’s lowest ebb.  And although songs like “Kill Your Gods” had both verve and hooks, they also epitomized the band’s conundrum: Matt Pollock had a perfectly ‘90s bark, but while the rest of the band delivered a worthy downtuned crunch, there was a greyness to the track, something just holding it back from fully taking flight.  Maybe it was lack of charisma: Paradise Lost and even Geezer Butler had attempted similar sounds at various points throughout the decade, but they had distinct personalities that more effectively sold this type of aggro-metal.  Still, “Kill Your Gods” was a valiant attempt at evolving the template, refining some of the aforementioned Paradise Lost’s more accessible material while keeping the British metal scene afloat for a bit.
