The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stars the voice talents of Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek), Brie Larson (Rosalina), Luis Guzman (Wart), Issa Rae (Honey Queen), and Donald Glover (Yoshi).

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

Beginning 5 years after the invasion of the Duplo aliens, Bricksburg is now a post-apocalyptic wasteland. When Lucy (voiced by Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), MetalBeard (Nick Offerman), Benny (Charlie Day) and Princess Unikitty (Alison Brie) are abducted by General Sweet Mayhem of the Systar System (Stephanie Beatriz), Emmett (Chris Pratt) goes to their rescue. While the “definitely not evil” Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) attempts to get her “guests” to love her sparkle-filled kingdom, Emmett and his new ally, Rex Dangervest (also Pratt) come up with a plan to topple the shape-shifting aliens’ regime.

What did I NOT like about the movie? Well, the picture’s best song (the villain’s song, of course) is not repeated during the end credits. Also, since this is the fourth Lego movie released, the animation style is not as eye-popping as it was the first time. Even if it were only the second, it isn't as fresh as the original. Finally, while the 3D is ok, it’s just ok.

This animated musical is packed with catchy songs and the tunes move the story forward, develop the characters and make you laugh… all at once. Everything takes place within the imagination of the child playing with the Legos so the "turn towards the screen and wink" songs work. Like the first film, this isn’t merely an adventure; it’s a commentary on the way we grow up and play. That extra layer of substance makes it feel inspired. There’s a great deal of fun for adults watching as mentally break down what Rex’s actions mean, what the Systar System symbolizes, what conclusions can be drawn from the conclusion, etc. Or you can simply enjoy it as is.

Although we've seen dust clouds made of bricks, pieces repurposed to make all kinds of crazy shapes and the dozens of cameos this film has to offer before, the visuals still dazzle. Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi's constantly-changing form is particularly cool. It’s brick-based stop-motion-style animation like we haven’t seen before, a delightful innovation which, combined with the characters’ many funny moments and the aforementioned song, make her a standout in a film with many favorites.

There’s substance beneath the gorgeous surface, memorable tunes, even the end credits are so good you’ll want to stick around to watch them. This sequel expands on the Lego world and characters, guaranteeing satisfaction for the fans. The instant we saw “The Lego Movie”, we knew they were going to make a sequel. The surprising thing is how good it turned out to be, they put the effort to ensure the audience get their money’s worth.

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" is a funny, pleasing sequel. See it for the visuals, the songs, the humor, the story or the symbolism. There's a lot of fun to be had with it. (3D Theatrical version on the big screen, February 9, 2019)
