Industrial Light and Magic was used for its rendering and real-time motion capture system, HELIOS, to set up performances on a virtual set. Anyone else, that would’ve taken weeks to set up, and ILM breeze through it in days, which allowed for even MORE creativity and emotional depth.
ILM also redesigned the faces so we’d capture all the bots’ emotions. Remember these iconic faces?
The one responsible for making sure you instantly recognized any one bot’s silhouette? All because of Amy Beth Christianson. You can even still see them in blurry action sequences. Orion is more round, D turned Megatron is more square.
The silhouettes change over the course of the movie - D/Megatron’s becomes heavier and box like, Orion’s becomes lighter and straighter. Not just a visual, it’s part of their arcs.
That iconic scene with Alpha Trion showing them what happened during the Quintesson fight? ILM purposely made it look like Augmented Reality.
Ever felt like you were being pulled in at times to the world itself? All intentional. FX details and edge-to-edge S3D stereo depth were layered by SDFX Studios.
Any and all scenes involving mining and scenes with a lot of dialogue, Cinematographer Christopher Batty used virtual cinema techniques, camera rigs, and motion capture performances (sometimes even using suit mimicry) to make them feel lived-in and on purpose.
The art design uses Art Deco Shapes and G1 aesthetics, inspired by Floro Dery and Jason Scheier.
And saving the best for last:
Brian Tyler? The guy who did the music and score? He’s already done work for Transformers before.
Maybe you’ve heard of it?
Chris reached out to Peter Cullen, Optimus’ original voice actor, for advice on how to play Orion Pax. He knew people were going to be wary about someone besides Peter playing him, and said, “They’re right."
All of Chris' lines were recorded from his home in Australia with his kids watching, who even gave him feedback after every take.
Chris talked to Josh Cooley extensively about putting together what Orion Pax should sound like, nuance, spontaneity, and a clear difference from other continuities. You recall how Orion’s started off sounding young and brash before slowly moving towards the Optimus voice we know? Chris’ idea.
Brian is the only one in the cast to be nominated for an Anni Award for Outstanding Voice Acting.
He was no stereotype. “We so rarely get a chance to know how villains become villains. They usually don’t start off that way — this film allowed me to really peel back those layers.” This particular performance? Inspired by his own college experience at Morehouse.
He doesn’t believe in reducing villains into a caricature. “I never go into it experiencing it as that, ‘Oh, I’m doing something wrong. Actually, I believe that everything I’m doing is just, for the betterment of everyone around me. But I’m in a world that has told us we have to be this way and that we should color within these lines. And I’m like, ‘No, why do we have to do that?’
He recorded alone, with the exception of Josh reading Orion’s lines so Brian could give a natural reaction to them. He called it “checking his ego at the door”. tapping into raw emotion and physical effort—breathing, fighting sounds, crying—as if he were actually in front of the camera.
He transitioned Megatron’s voice naturally over the film, just like Chris – young and hopeful, then slowly towards angry and betrayed.
All of Bumblebee’s dialogue? No voice modification whatsoever. That’s all 100%, pure Keegan.
Keegan’s not just a fan of Transformers now, he was back in the 80s too. Growing up in Michigan, he watched it after school whenever it came on.
Bumblebee’s overly talkative personality was a collaboration between both Keegan AND Josh Cooley, to set him apart from other continuities where he’s just a soldier or doesn’t talk.
Remember Bee’s little garbage robot friend A-A Tron? That was a reference to Key & Peele’s Substitute Teacher sketch, in which the teacher mispronounces Aaron as “A-a-ron.”
Apparently Keegan in the cast was the movie’s own Josh Gad/Olaf situation: Keegan was allowed and actively encouraged to improvise a lot of dialogue for Bee, and worked with Josh to determine the best lines to keep.
Both Chris AND Keegan Michael Key did Orion and Bee's combat moves while doing their lines: kicking, punching, running, and jumping, to fully embody the fight scenes. Keegan was even reported being seen leaving the booth sweaty.
