Now he’s back to safety in the Gryffindor common room, he’s sweating like mad – shaking from the adrenaline of the moment and trying not to think of how much of a fool he looked as he blurted out a miserable tangle of melded words that she’d somehow eventually managed to decipher.
“Are you alright there mate?” Tom asks, peering at his friend curiously.
Matthew is catatonic, staring straight ahead in shock.
“I just asked Mary Crawley to the ball.” He mutters quietly.
Tom actually reels backward in surprise.
“You did what?!”
Matthew says nothing.
“What did you do?” Clara asks, having just entered. She sits beside her brother, looking at him anxiously. He looks strange. Sweaty. Disorientated.
“He only asked Mary bloody Crawley to the ball,” Tom repeats, as if he’s just been hit over the head with a bat.
Clara’s eyes go wide. “Well?” She asks with urgency. “What did she say?”
“No, obviously.” Tom scoffs.
Matthew remains very quiet and very still. But his silence speaks volumes.
“She said yes?” Tom exclaims as though he’s never heard of the word before. “Mary Crawley?” He asks again, just to make sure. “The same Mary Crawley that hated you for five years?”
Matthew gives a curt nod.
“Well that’s great!” Clara says as if she’s trying to reassure him. “You’ve liked her for ages and you’re getting on so much better now…”
Is an understatement, Matthew thinks.
Until an incident during a quidditch match a few terms ago – or as Mary likes to denote it ‘the incident’ – it would have been fair to say that Matthew and Mary had been rather passionately opposed to each other. Since an unfortunate comment he’d made about her in first year had been overheard and never forgotten his name had been at the top of her bad books for years. They’d argued constantly in classes, bickered in the corridors and even been placed on opposing quidditch teams.
With her as the star Slytherin chaser and him as Gryffindor’s seeker, they hadn’t stood a chance at getting along. The fact that he had developed a crush on her during third year had only complicated matters. Still, she didn’t like him. So that was that.
Until ‘the incident’.
And now that they’re friends, he’s worried that what he has just gone and done might be about to ruin it.
He’d rather keep her as a friend than lose her as the girl he has a crush on.
Looking back on it now, in the safety of the common room with Tom’s shocked exclamations echoing in his ears, he’s not sure which one he’s more surprised by; the fact that he’d managed to pluck up the courage to ask Mary Crawley (Mary Crawley) to the ball, or the fact that she had actually said yes.
Across the hall ~ part II
a bit prickly
"What's up with porcupine?" Lavinia asked, joining the others at the breakfast table, motioning to Mary who wore a rather grim and tiresome expression, speaking wearily into her phone in the corner of the kitchen.
"She hasn't had sex in over two months," Tom said casually, his voice a little gruff as he crunched his cheerios. This earned him a swat over the head with the morning newspaper from Mary as she passed. "What? It's true!" He objected in-between spoonful’s.
The Governess

I did not write this one. It is new and I highly recommend it!

Headcannons for M&M's first date in a teenage AU?
Ooh interesting. Here’s a few but I’m sure more can be added.
1. Matthew spends ages trying to work up the courage to ask Mary to the village fair, but in the end Mary finds out about his crush and just says “pick me up at 7” before he can get the words out.
2. Mary teases him for being so cheesy when he comes to pick her up having bought her a very big bunch of flowers. But secretly she loves them.
3. Robert corners Matthew and gives him a full grilling when he comes to Downton to pick Mary up.
4. Edith and Sybil both come downstairs to get a glimpse of their sister’s date. Matthew is made very nervous by their incessant giggling.
5. Matthew is a terrible shot at the coconut shy and Mary does not stop laughing/teasing him about it
6. He eventually does win a little toy rabbit and gives it to her. She puts it on her bedside table when she gets home.
7. Matthew buys them both hot chocolate which gives Mary a milk-moustache. He desperately wants to kiss it away but can’t work up the nerve so uses his thumb instead. This gives them both the giggles for some reason.
8. Mary definitely grabs his hand to pull him in the direction of Ferris wheel — whether or not she forgets to let go, she thinks, is totally irrelevant
9. Mary absolutely gets cold and Matthew, of course, puts his jacket over her shoulders and uses this as an excuse to put his arm around her as he walks her back home at the end of the date
10. Mary kisses him on the cheek when they reach her home, which makes him turn pink at the ears. Just before she’s about to go inside, however, she thinks better of it and goes to kiss him properly.
11. It’s totally the best date either of them have ever had.
Just when you think your otp is endgame, everything goes to shit.
