Hardwon and Mawmaw
The Knight and his Queen
from anthony wilson's soon to be released photo book mawmaw
mawmaw is an intimate, long-term exploration of west virginia’s grandfamilies – households where children are being raised by their grandparents. spanning all four seasons, the work moves beyond the usual narratives around the opioid crisis to examine the many reasons grandparents step into a caregiving role: incarceration, death, unpreparedness, or neglect.
through photographs made between 2021 and 2026, the book weaves together everyday life — from birthdays and play to exhaustion and resilience — to show both the triumphs and the struggles of these families. at the heart of it all are the grandmothers themselves, who keep these children fed, happy, and most importantly, deeply loved.
Day 22 - Familiars!!!
Mawmaw and her baby champion, Pawpaw.
Grief is a funny thing. Because I think I've mostly processed things and am more or less back to normal and then something will just come out of nowhere and lay me out. I keep taking pictures of things to send in my photo roundup to my grandmother, only to remember that I won't be sending any more of those emails. It's sort of brutal in a way I can't describe. Like, I cleaned out her closet two days ago without crying at all (had a rather nice time, actually, going through decades of clothes and sassy type-writer letters to government officials and torn-out Mayonaise recipes from 1970's Better Homes and Gardens magazines) but here I am halfway through taking a picture of a magnolia blossom having an existential crisis. This is the first time I've lost someone close to me unexpectedly. I think part of the problem was that I didn't have time to prep my brain for needing to operate differently if that makes sense. Anyway. No morals or grand observations, here. Just feeling things.
jake hurwitz will be like. jill and i are having a second child. her name will be mawmaw
Day 2 for @lavendergalactic's event: make a gift for your younger self Mawmaw moodboard
I figured, maybe, I could share some of my critter art here with my warcraft stuff?
Most of the folks who follow me might not be interested in this sort of thing, but it might be worth posting for anyone who would like to see it!
I recently made a new fursona for myself.
Meet Mill the Mawmaw!
They're taking some time to chill under the shade of some trees. The temperatures around Arline can be quite hot...
To celebrate Mawmaw’s posthumous tumblr success, I’ve decided to share smth with u guys: a screen-recording of one of the many voicemails that my Mawmaw sent me & my mom back when she was alive... subtitled 4 ur convenience
BTW “Whats up? Not happy.” is an ancient Mawmaw proverb. Some more classic Mawmaw-isms include but r not limited to: “GoD dAmMiT”, “What’s the score here?!?!?!”, “Ready, Fred?”, and like… generally calling everyone “Fred” or “Peanut” in conversation.. she was a genius.
