This was the last painting his personal artist ever made before being executed when he discovered the meaning of the red roses were to symbolize his needless bloodshed. The blood was mostly able to be removed. Mostly.

hey you know what would've been existentially fucked up? what if during the whole plot arc with max ii, it was revealed that max wasn't actually the "original;" she was cloned from the girl they've been calling max ii, and max ii is actually the one who's destined to save the world.

it doesn't seem like max actually cared about saving the world too much, but she still has protagonist syndrome. i want that to be challenged! i want her to have to grapple with the fact that she's actually a copy of someone else!

Okay, a thing I realized recently: I have always assumed that Max II was a clone created maybe a few months before being deployed in order to infiltrate the Flock. But apparently other people have reasoned she was created at the same time as Max and raised separated from the rest of the Flock? 

Discuss.

Hm. Okay so on the subject of Maya vs Max II discourse, I have some very complicated feelings. Like 

1. I don’t think Maya and Max II are the same person as Max II openly expresses disgust with all of the flock and enjoys seeing them tortured as well as feeding Angel to Ari so like, to have her chill out in France and then come back and be interested in spending time with Fang is... a Choice. Even in Germany she still thinks Max in particular is dumb and isn’t exactly jumping at the chance to flock up.

2. While I get the whole “She’s her own person not just a clone” thing, Max II is like openly happy about being called Max II in SO-F. Also in SO-F and STWAOES I’d say the character was far more defined outside of Max than she was in ANGEL and NEVERMORE where they did focus on her place as Max’s replacement instead of, “hey look at this person who’s supposed to replace Max but is almost comically bad at it because of how different she is” it became “Let’s give Maya the same personality as Max but this time she smiles a bunch more because she’s softer” so like, if they wanted to push the “They’re different people” narrative, make them... different people

3. If you say I can’t call her Max II that means I’m not allowed to keep adding roman numerals onto the end of Ari to indicate his clone brothers, Arii, Ariii, and Ariv. 

4. On an unrelated note if I ever mention Ari X that’s what I’m naming Phoenix for no other reason than it sounds just as dumb but I like it better. 

Y’all aren’t wrong obviously for referring to her as Maya because that’s what we’re told canonically, but I’m just explaining why you’ll see both thrown around periodically on the blog. Not cuz I think they’re interchangeable, but because I genuinely think they’re different people

Theory

So we all remember how Maya tried to replace Max at the end of book two, and how she was immediately found out because she acted like the exact opposite of Max. She offers to cook, she does Nudges hair, and then Angel gets to deliver the zipper of “I can read minds, you idiot.” 

But lets take a closer look at this little operation from the Itex side. We already know Jeb and Ari are working with Maya. However, because of Maya’s comment about how boring it is to watch Erasers play poker all day, we can assume Jeb is the only whitecoat on this particular initiative. This is important, because Jeb knows the Flock. He knows Max doesn’t cook, he knows Max doesn’t do hair, and he most definitely knows Angel can read minds. With him on the team, there’s no way these things should have been an issue, right? 

BUT earlier in the book, there’s a little throwaway comment by Ari about Jeb “hating the new Max”. Based on this line and the above, it is my belief that Jeb intentionally sabotaged the “new Max” plan. He intentionally neglected to tell Maya about key parts of Max’s personality he knew would trip her up, and he intentionally didn’t tell her about Angels abilities so that it would be practically guaranteed she would fail.

Does this make him good? Hell no. IMHO, it’s another example of his ridiculous moral flip flopping he does throughout the series. But still, it’s interesting to think that he could go from wanting to kill the Flock to sabotaging Itexs plans to wanting to kill them again.
