part i - young blood

The banner flutters to the ground, a flash of green, and Max can't know if he leans forward before Daniel does. Midnight responds, rears up for half a step before he charges into a full canter down the list. Max is sure in the saddle, he knows this horse, this armor, the weight of the lance better than he knows anything else.

part ii - first blood

Daniel can't get Max out of his head even when there are many miles and a clan border between them. When they meet at the jousting tournament, it seems Max and Daniel's lives are hopelessly intertwined even though their fates should have diverged.

It feels like a dream, seeing Daniel again after all these years. It’s a second chance Max knows he doesn’t deserve, and he isn’t going to waste it.

Or: Max isn’t racing in 2027, although he couldn’t tell you exactly why. But it isn’t a big deal. He’s fine.
