Tricky - Maxinquaye (4th + B'Way, 1995) Genre: Trip Hop, Hip Hop, Dub, Artwork: Cally Callomon, Richard Baker, Robert Crane
Tricky's debut album was released in the UK on 20 February 1995 (it would be released in the US in April).
Tricky had been a founding member of Massive Attack (which released their debut single in 1988) and appeared on their first two albums, but decided to leave to pursue his solo career (Tricky had offered "Aftermath," which he had recorded with Martina Topley-Bird, to Massive Attack, but they declined).
"Aftermath" was released as the lead single for Maxinquaye (named after his mother, Maxine Quaye, who died when Tricky was 4) and while the single only peaked at #69 in the UK, the album peaked at #3 (it did not chart in the US).
The album was considered by many to be a masterpiece when it was released, "ambitious," "audacious," and "highly inventive." It has been named as one of the best albums of the 1990s (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone), one of the best British Albums of All Time (Q), and one of the Best Albums of All Time (NME, Uncut). It remains as innovative and influential as it did in 1995.
