Square filled for @buckybarnesbingo Y1: Childhood friends
“Welcome to our little engagement announcement party.” Your soon-to-be husband raised his glass filled with champagne. He smiled at the people closest to you and him, especially you, sitting on the couch, your children in your arms.
“You know that Y/N and I grew up together. We were best friends for half of our lives until we became more than friends three years ago. We want to seal our bond with all of you around.”
Everyone cheered and clapped their hands. Everyone but your mother-in-law. She used to like you and even called you her daughter. Things changed around the time your beloved twins were born. She’d constantly check if one of them looked like your fiancé.
Your baby boy was the spit image of his father. Your little girl didn’t have his features, but she had his attitude. No one could deny they are his babies.
“We also want to give our babies my name,” he continued, proudly puffing his chest when your daughter held her tiny hands out to him. “Yeah, baby girl. I know you miss your daddy already.”
Your mother-in-law made a displeasing noise. She narrowed her eyes in your direction. You didn’t know what changed between you.
“Maybe you will finally consider doing a paternity test before marrying my son.”
Gasping audibly, you looked at her. So far, she had never mentioned that she doubted paternity. The twins were Bucky’s and only his.
“How can you even doubt paternity?” You raised your voice at your mother-in-law. “Jamie looks exactly like his father, and our baby girl, Wilma, has his character.”
“Character means shit,” she cursed in front of your toddlers. She always acted all high and mighty, pretending to be a perfect lady, but cursed in front of two innocent children?
“Your opinion means—” you covered your baby boy’s ears while Bucky did the same with Wilma, “shit. How dare you ruin our engagement announcement to accuse me of cheating?”
The crowd gasped. “I didn’t say you are a slut,” she replied, shrugging, “I only thought about the old saying. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.“
“What are you talking about? My mom never cheated on my dad. How can you come to their house and accuse me and my mother of being cheaters?” You couldn’t fathom she’d do such a thing.
“I don’t want my son to raise illegitimate children, like your uncle. I know your aunt cheated on him. The poor man raised a child who wasn’t his,” she snapped back, now looking at your children as if they were parasites.”
“My aunt?” You laughed. “We are not even related by blood. My uncle is my mother’s brother. How can you compare me to that woman? Her infidelity has nothing to do with me or my relationship with Bucky.”
Bucky squared his jaw. He was about to explode, but you shook your head. The last thing you wanted was to fight in front of your children or for your mother-in-law to ruin your engagement announcement.
“You learn what you see,” she snapped back, still adamant about your possible infidelity. She just wouldn’t stop, not even for the sake of her son and your children.
“Can you not do this in front of two toddlers who adore you as their grandmother?” You slowly lost your patience. If she pushed you a little more, you’d lose control. “I never gave you reason to doubt me, Winnifred. What happened?”
She didn’t have a good answer. Maybe it was the fact that she heard about her neighbor cheating on her husband, or the fact that you openly talked about your aunt’s infidelity during your pregnancy.
Somehow, the idea that you are carrying some other man’s babies manifested in her mind.
“I only want what’s best for my son,” she said, unsure how to explain her feelings. “He deserves to know if the children are his.”
“Maybe you should just do it,” Winnifred’s brother chimed in. You never liked him much, but now he would end up blacklisted.
“Fine,” you snapped at her. “We can get a paternity test, but I assure you, you’ll never get anywhere near my babies when the results come back, showing that Bucky is the father.”
“Doll, we won’t do this shit.” Bucky winced when you shushed him. He used another bad word in front of the kids. “I know the babies are mine.”
“There’s no need to do another test,” Winnifred triumphantly smirked. She pulled an envelope out of her bag and waved it. “I already let a reliable laboratory run a test with the kids. The results came in this morning.”
You felt like someone poured ice-cold water over you. Winnifred, the person calling you her daughter, went behind your and Bucky’s back and got a paternity test. “You did what? You went behind our backs and did a paternity test? That’s what you did when babysitting our babies?”
“I had to,” she shrugged and slowly opened the envelope. “We all will see now that babies are not Bucky’s.”
“Go ahead, open the envelope. And after you read that Bucky is their father, you will leave and never come back. I assure you that you will hear from my lawyer too. He’d love to drag your ass to court for violating our babies.”
She huffed, believing she did nothing wrong. “Here it is, my …” Winnifred swallowed thickly; the results told exactly what you had told her more than once. “Ninety-nine percent, Jamie is the father of both.”
“What did you expect?” Bucky’s voice was dangerously low. You knew he was about to rip someone apart. “Y/N is the most caring and loyal woman I have ever met. Now, get out.”
“What?” Winnifred looked surprised. “But…everything is good now. They are yours, and I’m their grandmother!”
“You were their grandmother,” you said, eyes filled with anger.
“I am!” She insisted.
“Not anymore,” Bucky replied before you could. “We left you alone with our babies because we trusted you, Mother.” He spat out the last word. “Instead of being a grandmother caring for them, you got a paternity test.”
“Jamie… It was only for your own good. I tried to protect my only son,” she cried. “I believe she’s not honest with you.”
“There lies the problem, Mother.” He slowly walked toward you to hand you your baby girl. “You didn’t do it for me. I never asked you to humiliate my fiancée in front of everyone she knows and loves. And for sure, I didn’t ask you to swipe my babies’ cheeks to find out if they are mine.”
You looked at your babies, mourning their loss. They’d never see their grandmother again. Bucky is unforgiving, and so are you if someone hurts your babies.
“You will never see them again,” Bucky growled. “This is my last word.” He grabbed her arm and started dragging her out of your parents’ house. “This was the final straw, Mother. You are a shame to our family and me. I cannot believe you did this to my babies and Y/N.”
You flinched at hearing the front door slam shut. Bucky cursed before he returned to you and the other guests. “May it is,” your father said, raising his glass to show his support for your bond with Bucky. “That’s a great date for a wedding.”
