The phase when you, the reader, are thinking back on the reading. The phase where you think about the characters you spent time with and the author's take on the world. This is when I assess: Was that time well spent? Was that the company I wanted to keep? Was there something bigger here than simply the surface level story itself? 🤫 To be honest, I had stayed away from this book because of one word in the title: Vampires. I went through my vampire stage back in 7th grade with Interview with a Vampire a la Anne Rice et al and I asked myself did I really want to revisit that phase now, oh so many years later. So I did not jump to add this book to my TBR pile. Then I began to here things that made me think this was a novel for me and I was right. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires is more than a story about a vampire. The vampire is yes a vampire but he is also symbolic. I'm still unraveling all of this but wanted to capture some of the many ideas that are rattling around in my head. I finished The Guest List by Lucy Foley last weekend. The book had me at thriller, however, once I started it, I quickly realized that I did not like any of the characters. I understand that this was by design, but it made it really hard for me to roll with the novel. All I can say is once I hit page 101, I could not put it down. I am still mulling this one over. At this point in the post reading process I can only say it is different in a Twilight Zone kind of way for me. Each episode of Twilight Zone left the viewer with something to chew on that was much bigger than a 30 minute 1960s TV episode. Cloaked in the show were bigger world issues that were hidden behind the faces of aliens and monsters, i.e. "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street.
