12.17.13 - "Maybe This Christmas" by Ron Sexsmith
During the Holiday season in 2002, I was walking through the Virgin Megastore at Downtown Disney when I came across a new CD called "Maybe this Christmas" which featured several independent artists singing updated versions of Holiday classics, or original compositions on the Holidays. I picked it up that night and after a few listens realized that I'd come across one of my favorite Holiday CDs. It was that album, along with it's 2 follow ups, that made me start thinking about Holiday music in a different light. While there are still plenty of traditional songs to be found, I'm more intrigued by the way people take the thoughts and emotions of the holidays to inspire new lyrics that represent their own hopes and views for the future.
The title song off that album was recorded by Ron Sexsmith and its simple melody and relaxed vocals provide a calming listening experience during the hectic season. The lyrics may not mention Santa, elves, or even presents, but the song is one of the most honest and straight forward christmas songs that I've heard in a long time. He sings about his excitement for the holiday and hope that its arrival will bring forward the peace that we all need.
Maybe this Christmas will mean something more
Maybe this year
Love will appear
Deeper than ever before
And maybe forgiveness will ask us to call
Someone we've loved
Someone we've lost
For reasons we can't quite recall
Maybe this Chistmas
Maybe they'll be an open door
Maybe the star that's shown before will shine once more
And maybe this Christmas will find us at last
In heavenly peace
Grieve for the least
For the love we've been shown in the past
Maybe this Christmas
Maybe this Christmas
As we get closer to Christmas day and all the excitement that it brings. I hope to remember the hope and meaning of this song...and maybe this Christmas, it's message of hope will come true.
