so I saw this expression/palette challenge recently and I really wanted to do it, but I didn't want to fully open up requests here, either. so I ended up just asking some friends for suggestions and here were some of the results!

I had a LOT of fun with these, honestly. might do more of 'em sometime in the future?? idk, we'll see!

I can't and won't stop making Illager OCs so here is another evoker guy named Murray. Tried some different ways to draw him, because I noticed I never really drew them in the MC style and I wanted to give it a try.

i have ideas and made up stuff about minecraft magic.

Especially Evoker spellcasting and magic burns.

All spellcasts require two components, and are better controlled with a third; Intent, Power Words, and Foci. 

Further explanations under the cut.

Intent : No spellcast works without the intent. There is no “accidentally” uttering a spell. You either want to or don’t want to. While you can technically subconsciously want to, it results in an extremely weak cast that won’t do much of anything, besides be a bit of a surprise.

Power Words : You know the gibberish runes from the Enchantment Table? Turns out it’s still gibberish, but there’s some words in there. (Image Below) (Link)

Words of power are spoken in the arcane tongue and are strung together to make a basis for the spell. A fireball would be easy and very literal, as you’d just have to string the arcane words for “fire” and “ball” or “sphere” together. A vex, though, would require “creature”, “curse”, “humanoid”, several clarifying power words due to the complexity of the entity.

Foci : A focus (multiple: foci), something which arcane power is channeled through, from the body to the outside world. Evokers use their hands, witches use wands, the enchantment table itself, etcetera. 

 Evokers imbue their spells further via Sign Language, signing both Power Words and additional Common words through sign language to clarify intent. I like to translate Evokers wiggling their arms ingame incessantly as them signing furiously.

 Witches use spellcasting less for actual spells, and more to accelerate the production of potionmaking and to enchant their possessions without the use of an enchantment table.

 Enchantment Table and Enchanted Books are the originators of the Power Word compilation, though not the spoken arcane language. Whoever created the language used on these magic items is long gone, and the current arcane language is cobbled together from guesswork and tainted by the Common tongue. It works well enough, though.  It’s argued that intent has changed the core of the language, as many words that make no sense, such as xyzzy and wgahnagl, have had meanings assigned to them through extremely weak guesswork. I’m ignoring the word baguette.

 When a spell is started, it cannot be stopped, or else the spell will fail and burn out in a violent burst of arcane energy, or a magic rebound. This, as well as poor spell control and attempting to cast spells beyond one’s level of training, often causes arcane burns.

 Evokers in particular are predisposed to being wounded by their own spellcasting, as they use their own body, their hands, as foci. As such, they often have arcane burns and burn scars.

 Burst burns come from aborted or unproperly cast spells, and look like bursting explosions on the skin. Magic rebound from attempting to cast a spell above one’s level burns and discolors the veins (though does not hinder their function) in the hands, wrists, and occasionally, the arms.

 Arcane burns do not melt flesh, but can be very painful. Burst burns happen quickly and stop hurting quickly, while rebound burns cause intense (although not burning) aches and pains from days to months, depending on the severity.

Arcane burns are a bright fuschia when initially obtained, but fade into a mottled and unnatural-looking pink, purple, and occasionally cyan over time. Arcane burns are likely to scar, but they can fade in time as long as the area is given time to recover from the trauma.

 Younger and in-training Evokers usually cover their hands, leaving their fingertips bare, in order to lessen injuries. The hand coverings are often imbued with power words and spells themselves, in effort to dilute or redirect magic feedback.

collection of arts from my sketchbook! I was able to scan my stuff again, so that made it easier to stitch together some of the better sketches I've done recently ;o;

might just stick with pencil for a while, honestly. I've had a slightly higher measure of success with traditional compared to digital lately, so I might as well go with whatever works, right?
