Picture Frame Fifties Collar: McCalls 8537
This re-issued 1950s fit and flare dress follows the favorite hour-glass silhouette of that decade. It offers a novelty collar which becomes even more like a picture frame due to the choice of a striped fabric. The collar itself is not pieced, so stripes will require careful layout and sewing to make sure that the stripes meet accurately at the corner. As you can see from the small sketch, you could do this in a solid fabric would soften the squared off collar a bit, but only a bit.
I do like a fuller striped skirt for summer. They catch the breeze and seem to embody the playfulness of the days off. This one is mitered with the bottom of the miter at the waistline. This seems the wrong choice in light of the 1950s emphasis on a small waist and a larger hipline. If you instead place the top of the miter meeting at the center waist, like this //\\ , you create a more graceful line in the stripes as the fullness of the mitered stripes then follows the fullness of the skirt.
The little jacket is shown in a perfectly matching white which is then trimmed with the striped fabric, but you can imagine all kinds of variations with the collar and cuffs in a contrasting color. It has a cut-one sleeve which may or may not suit you depending on how square your shoulders are. It is possible to add a diamond gusset into the underarm seam to allow you a bit more flexibility.
