You Never Know What You Will See in Chicago!
The Daylight as American Freedom Train 4449 tangled with a truck en route to Chicago, mangling the front end just a bit. Corporate sponsor GM took the big Northern under it's wing, and sent it to it's EMD plant in McCook, IL for repairs. No problem for the artisans at EMD: perhaps not used to working on steam, but up to the task none the less. In a few days, we all received word (via telephone, remember that?!) that at 11AM the loco would move out of the plant's back gate and out onto the IHB/B&OCT line, heading north to the C&NW at Proviso Yard. There it would take over from the east coast loco, AFTX #1, a former Reading engine. Doyle McCormick is babying his stead north, and is passed by a Milwaukee Road Indiana Division train headed the same way. It is photographed by the conductor who had remembered to take his camera to work that day, as well as about 25 railfans who were fortunate enough to be "on the list!" Species: Green Jay Location: Santa Clara Ranch, McCook, TX Story Behind the Shot: Malloch photographed this stunning Green Jay at Santa Clara Ranch, a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary in the bird-rich Lower Rio Grande Valley. The colorful tropical birds, found primarily in Mexico and South America, approached the watering hole at the ranch with caution, landing in nearby trees or shrubs to make sure it was safe before flying in for a drink.
