a few hours, fighting through burnout, and a few creepypasta podcast episodes later, we have shad the destroyer
aphtober day 21: legacy
shad wasn’t my first choice. of course i considered irene, a dual shot of hyria and lucinda, zianna or even garte ro’meave, before i realized how good shad would be for this prompt. the way i thought about it upon my deliberation, shad the destroyer did leave a legacy through inevitability.
GUESS WHO'S BACK TO RAMBLE HEHE
I'm sorry for the horrible ms paint doodles but I needed something to explain my Shadow Knights
anyways ramble under cut as always
cw mention of cannibalism and light gore (?)
the reason shad doesn’t hit as hard of a villain in mcd is because all we have of s3 is buildup. and because they wanted to focus on zane since they bothered to bring him back as a villain instead of properly using zenix or gene or EVEN FUCKING BRIAN WHO GOT A GHOST MENTION AT THE BEGINNING OF S2 AND THEN NEVER AGAIN IS MENTIONED DESPITE HIS BETRAYAL
obv they had bigger plans for shad as the antagonist as shown with the heart of darkness mini arc, and the clips they would show of him in the nether, and the little convos between him and aaron, but we’ll never get to see the fruition of that buildup because of the forever hiatus we got after the “We NeEd To Go TO TULa” thing
i REALLY wish we’d gotten to see more of the characters and plotlines that were brought up in early s3 and the entirety of what we got, and ik everyone else feels that way, but i feel like there were such interesting little threads they left in too that have really kept my attention and now i wish i had a genie so i could wish that i could know what direction they were going in
Been working on the concept for a fic where the heart of darkness meets all of the DW descendants/present day representations and it spawned the idea of Shads mind being so fractured he struggles to discern past and present and that's why he keeps seeing Aphmau as Irene.
Like the scene I originally was working on was Travis and Garroth joining Aphmau and Katelyn for when they first meet the heart of darkness in the elven forest and the heart says something snarky like "What, was Kul'Zak too busy to join you in your gloating?" And then he proceeds to respond to them as if he is partaking in a completely different conversation that Aphmau and co are trying to have with him.
Stuff like them asking what his motivations are and him responding with "You know why I started this war, don't mock me like this." Thinking that he's in prison before they banish him after defeating him during the War of the Magi instead of a random cell.
Idk, just an interesting concept that could kind of parallel Irene losing her emotions, Shad loses his perception of past and present.
Part of me thinks that, in some way, Irene is punishing Aaron for Shad's crimes, even if subconciously. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if some part of Irene resented Shad for his turn to evil and cruelty, all over a "necessary evil," at least, in her eyes. So why not take the feelings she so stubbornly ignores and force all his incarnations to go through immesurable pain while calling it "love." I mean, the man has died and come back from the dead/almost died a rough total of 8 times throughout his 7 seperate incarnations, and that's just based on what we HAVE seen.
The same could potentially be applied to Irene's own incarnations as well...
