Queer people of Tumblr, I need your help.

I am writing a term paper on queerbaiting, queer media, and specifically coming out scenes directed and written by people who do not identify as queer with regard to Nancy Fraser's understanding of Public Spheres (it's no problem if you have never heard of that).

I would like to ask you about your thoughts on the subject, if you have ever felt well represented by such a scene and more importantly, what you thought such coming out scenes were lacking. Have you had a "Mom, Dad, I'm gay" moment?

It is often scripted as a very important moment, examples ranging from pride and joy to feeling inner shame and pain. A scene that is very different to the course of a series or movie can immediately portray otherness or alterity.

To me, it can sometimes feel like representing (for example) a gay character like that is someone interpreting what it's like, that the coming out is just an essential part of the queer experience (as if it's the most important milestone) and as soon as you do you're on some other side. The focus here is on scenes with a big audience (yes, Stranger Things season five too).

These are my own findings. You don't have to agree with me, I'd rather you even challenge this. Keep in mind, I mainly write about camera, lightning, directing, differences in this particular scene.

Authors of Merlin BBC Fanfics needed (for my bachelor's thesis)

Do you write Fanfiction about the BBCs Merlin (2008) tv series, or have you written some a while ago? And have you – in the best case – published at least one of them on Archive of Our Own (AO3)? And do you have at least 30 minutes of time and are interested in an interview?

My name is Kay, and at the moment I am writing my bachelor’s thesis for “Media Science B.A.” at the University of Bayreuth. As a topic I chose fanfiction and fan communities in the context of the tv series Merlin (2008) with a focus especially on fanfiction authors for this series. And this is why I want to interview a few of them. It is not important whether you’ve been fan from the very first hour and wrote your first Merlin fanfiction back in 2008, or if you haven’t written any Merlin fanfiction at all for the last few years, or even just recently uploaded your very first one: Your impressions are still very interesting and important for me.

The interview should last about 30 minutes and would happen via Zoom. You need to be able to talk with me via microphone. It is not necessary for you to be on camera. And it can be held in English and German. I do need to record the interview so I can transcribe it later. But nobody besides me will have access to the recording itself and all recordings will be deleted after transcribing. Within the transcript, any data that could be used to clearly identify a person will be anonymised. So you are able to stay anonymous and your data is protected. Everything is in compliance with the european GDPR and the german BDSG (both are data protection guidelines) and participants will get full information regarding data protection beforehand.

One of the many reasons why I love my media analysis prof is that when explaining how genres are being used to establish certain expectations, he used fanfiction as the example.

What's even funnier is that nobody in a class of almost 50 people asked what fanfiction is.

On Twitter, fake news has greater allure than truth does

In the Twittersphere, fake news gets more views than real stories, based on an analysis of more than 4.5 million tweets.

The truth about online fake news is becoming clearer. A new study shows that on Twitter, phony stories reach more people than truthful ones do. Fake stories also spread far faster.

Fake news refers to stories based on false or misinterpreted information. These stories try to dupe readers into believing something that isn’t true. Some might try to make public figures look bad or claim people did something they didn’t. Others might try to discredit scientific findings. Such stories are often shared on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. But scientists have lacked data on how widely they were shared, or by whom. So a team of researchers decided to investigate.

They recently analyzed more than 4.5 million tweets and retweets. All had been posted between 2006 and 2017. And their disturbing finding: Fake news spreads faster and further on Twitter than true stories do.

Filippo Menczer studies informatics and computer science at Indiana University in Bloomington. He was not part of the new study but says its findings are important for understanding the spread of fake news. Before this, he notes, most investigations used a few people’s observations rather than a mountain of scientific data. Until now, he says, “We didn’t have a really large-scale, systematic study evaluating the spread of misinformation.”

Chains of retweets discussing true news stories (green) took longer, on average, to reach the same number of people as did tweets about fake news (red). Deb Roy, who did work on the new analysis, studies media and social networks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. In the past, he also has worked as a media scientist for Twitter. To study how news spreads on Twitter, Roy and his colleagues collected tweet cascades. These are groups of messages composed of one original tweet and all retweets of that initial post. They examined about 126,000 cascades centered on any of about 2,400 news stories. Each of those original news stories had been independently confirmed as true or false.

The researchers then collected data on how far and fast each cascade spread. Discussions of bogus stories tended to start from fewer original tweets. But they tended to soon spread extensively. Some chains reached tens of thousands of users! True news stories, in contrast, never spread to more than about 1,600 people. And true news stories took about six times as long as false ones to reach 1,500 people.

Overall, these data show, fake news was about 70 percent more likely to be retweeted than was real news. The team reported its results in the March 9, 2018 Science.
