film making tips?

Hello, lovelies! I am currently in the process of trying to make a short film for a uni project and I was wondering if anyone has any techniques, tips or programme advice on how to make a film? I need advice on how to capture the feeling of empty, unoccupied spaces... and I have no idea how... I am very inexperienced in this field and anything would help! the programme I am using is imovie (i know im new okay it's all I know...) and Adobe Premiere Pro.

#2) GUYS, DID YOU KNOW: IT’S OKAY TO NOT EXUDE MASCULINITY EVERYDAY (SLLS3013)

It has been debated and discussed on various news and media outlets: how men resort to sexist topics and jokes in order to over-exert their masculinity when it has been threatened (Best, 2017). The media, especially digital spaces and social media has pushed the dialogue on the boundaries of patriarchy; gender roles and those topics in the media, with many social media platforms hosting users with opposite views on the idea of hyper-masculinity in the media. This is not to say that when masculinity is being threatened, it is suggesting that men are becoming more feminine based on what they expose themselves to within the media, not even in the slightest. The idea behind the threat of masculinity in the digital space is to determine whether men on the online community across the world are clued up on how powerful and toxic their masculinity is in society against other genders, if men are clued up with how society is evolving with the acceptance of feminist practices; LGBT and gender equality through their exposure to the media, or if men are comfortable with the idea of discussing social issues that are perpetuated by their masculinity or wearing items that are not seen as hyper-masculine in public, and discussing these issues or items with their colleagues and friends without being criticized or without their masculinity being threatened with their new interests in contemporary society in the 21st century.

When discussing masculinity in the digital space, both McConnell (1995) and William Pollack (1999) make reference to “the boy code”: which speaks of the daily actions, symbols and roles which mold and push the identity (that is perpetuated by society) of the strong, providing man into young boys as they grow older and develop (Hautakangas, 2015: 113). This code has been adapted and fed to generations of men that, when any faces any type of threat towards their masculinity, men are not seen as equipped to handle such situations in a logical manner with what they have been taught as men, and thus result with reactions that are hyper-masculine (such as violent reactions and insulting slurs).

Take a look at the Twitter hashtag #MasculinitySoFragile, which was a trend started by Anthony Williams (a professor in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley) in 2015, with the aim of discussing the violence and harassment that all women face in their daily lives (Thomas, 2015). When Williams’ hashtag began to trend and become more popular on various social media pages across the online community, the responses from both men and women displayed reactions which were emotionally; and hostile fuelled, with a large majority of these responses having any relation to the original intentions of Williams’ hashtag (view figures below for examples). The hostile reactions and online harassment mostly from the men is what Miltner and Banet-Weiser refer to as “networked misogyny” (2015: 171). this form of harassment reflects the toxic masculinity that is associated with the number of cases on gender based violence and various forms of harassment that women face in different societies. Anthony Williams’ hashtag and the reaction to it gained the public’s interest (especially from feminist groups and individual male or female users) proved the theory made by Papacharissi on the power of the users within the virtual space, as well as the power of the discussion created by the social media applications and various other online communities within the virtual space (2002:11).

The narrative of how vulnerable the masculine man is in the digital space, gives further understanding into how communities interact with the masculine versus feminine debate in real life and in the social media space, and how well these same communities receive the discussions on specific social issues which are fuelled by the same theme of masculinity (the original intention of Williams’ actions). My understanding of both Anthony Williams’ objectives and the male online community, is not to devalue or insult the male gender in society with how it has contributed to the high number of cases of harassment and violence against women across the globe, but rather to view the strong fear of emasculation (that is evident not only in the mind of the man but also the mind of the woman) that results in the men hyper-sensitizing their masculinity through their responses and reactions online (the existence of meninist groups who counter the views of feminism and ‘anti-men’ social media accounts) (Thomas, 2015).

What Miltner and Banet-Weiser’s article, as well as Williams’ actions also prove, is that although society provides the space for men to cry (whether privately or publicly) and to sometimes take time off from thier hyper-masculine roles, the fear that men possess is so strong that they would rather limp through the online community (whilst avoiding tears at all costs) when their masculinity is threatened than to actually take a break from being a macho man and be respected more for crying in public or private. If society allows for this to continue, then what a bleak future it is for men.
