Shredding & Drum Solos, Medieval Style
A sampler of some awesome work by Marco Cannavò & Steve Tyler. I think everything in this video is 12th & 13th century. @sinick, there are TWO duets on hurdy-gurdy and somebody works a tambourine in ways I did not know they could be worked.
ETA: Hot damn, this one includes a sample of two hurdy-gurdies and a doumbek going flat out on "Sumer Is Icumen In."
Duloc Dungeon
Decided to organize the torture instruments and devices in the Duloc Dungeon. Might as well share here, if anyone's curious or can give any more interpretations
(These screenshots are really dark on mobile)
So I finally finished making the thing
if I may ask, how much was your hammered dulcimer?? I'm interested in getting one, but I'm not sure price wise if I'll have enough
tbh I have no idea... I learned like a month ago that apparently my mom got hers for super cheap because at the time she was dating the guy who made it, which I think is hilarious (she admits she maybe had some ulterior motives for dating him, but apparently he ended up being kind of an asshole, so /shrug)
and mine was given to us by a family friend
poking around online, it looks like on the low end is like $500, high end gets very high (like several thousand), if you’re good at finding deals you might be able to get a used one for like $300 or less
here’s my general advice for buying instruments, especially more obscure instruments:
- if you don’t really care about quality, you can get a shitty one from the internet for cheap, but the difference in quality will be noticeable. (that’s why I have a clavichord that goes out of tune at the drop of a pin, doesn’t sound that good, wobbles on its feet, and is even quieter than clavichords are supposed to be - BUT I do *have* a clavichord, which was worth it for me at the time).
- if you browse old instrument shops, thrift stores, garage sales, that sort of thing, you might get really lucky and find a gem for much less than it’s worth - but you have to look in person to know if it’s good.
- if you want something that will be consistently good without having to search, buy from a reputable maker and know that it will cost.
tl:dr, if your budget is limited, either accept that you’ll end up with an instrument that’s kinda shitty, or you’ll have to really hunt for it (and don’t trust it to be good unless you’ve played it yourself).
