*crawls out of my pit* the children didn't kill me and spring break is coming. i was tagged in like three different posts by my beloved @oh-no-another-idea for a total of thirteen words. i will be splitting this one into two posts lol. i haven't done much writing at all since i have been buried under a mountain of grading for like. two weeks. so this is from all over the cycle lol let's go hunting

Her eyes snap open and she nearly shoves him away, but he catches her wrist and lifts it to his mouth, pressing his lips to the delicate bones. “Ah, Meja. You are an expert secret-keeper, I will give you that. Had I known, I would have offered to take you both from the beginning.”

[Emilia] laughs. “I wasn’t born with the ability.” She wraps one of his wrists in the towel, adding gentle pressure to get the bleeding to stop. “I learned how to use the gifts of the earth to heal.” She tips her head. “Some of the plants may be magical, I suppose. I’ve never thought to check.” Keelan’s lips twitch, but he says nothing else as she unwraps his wrist and then wraps the other.

Birdie's eyes dart to the others—two more men, with similar leers on their faces. Silver sparks hover at her fingertips—she doesn't have the energy to jump to the flat, and maybe not even enough to jump at all. She wishes she had her father's staff, or even a sword. Fabin's fingers wrapped around hers on the hilt of the sword, her back pressed to his chest. She grits her teeth. Now is not the time for her mind to play such childish tricks on her. There's no sense in pretending things aren't the way they are. He's gone, and she's better off for it.

Rosaleen takes her hand and crouches down to examine her face. “Did you swim in the pond again?” “Keys threw me in.” Rosaleen glances up at Keelan, who shrugs. She looks back at Birdie, a smirk playing across her lips. “Did you ask him to?” Birdie looks down at the floor. “Yes.”

The spikes bite into his hand, beginning to press against the bones. He chokes on a cry, imagining he can feel Jack's shoulder pressed against his. His head falling against Arthur's collarbone, the smell of him lingering on Arthur's pillow— The guard backhands him, jerking him back to reality. “Can't have you wandering off,” the torturer says with clear amusement. “You must live in the present, didn't the nuns teach you that?” “They taught me that cruelty was a greater sin than any other,” Arthur grinds out, his eye already swelling. “They taught me kindness.”
