Longtime Yankees announcer Mel Allen switches from radio to television on May 11, 1956. He is calling the game between the Yanks and the Baltimore Orioles at the Stadium. Cameraman is Jim Woods. Baseball was originally broadcast on AM radio, but at this time major automakers were switching their advertising from radio to TV.

At the age of 83, Hall of Fame broadcaster Mel Allen, best known for his years doing play-by-play for the Yankees, dies of heart failure. His “How about that” signature line will become familiar to another generation of fans through the syndicated This Week in Baseball show, which he hosted from the show’s inception in 1977.

Ed. Note: I watched every episode of TWiB from ‘77 - '96. It was a one-of-kind show, and Mel Allen was a one-of-kind announcer.

The first Emmy Awards (then called the Michaels) were handed out on March 21, 1950 by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Television and Radio.
