Modular Design: A week in review

This week saw a study of the pros and cons of modular game design including the creation of a small kit of our own to using a preconstructed set to create a level from.

The above image is what I ended up creating in the hour and a half or so we had. In the end, the kit included:

Base hex walls

Door

Ceiling pipes

Light pannels

Right side bar

Left side dual pipes

Left side centre (I really don’t know what to call this piece but it is in the photo between the dual pipes)

Indented ring

Another indented ring, ever so slightly different than the first

It is all just straight sections so I might add this idea to that 2.0 stack that is slowly growing and attempt to make it more interesting.

The next day we were handed a premade kit and set about creating our own level out of it. The kit also included some basic gameplay functions including trigger teleports, an inventory system and a few prebuilt objects we could use.

In the end, I over scoped a little(maybe more than a little)(again) with my idea of having the player start in a central courtyard surrounded by 4 huts one with a glow that teleports the player to another location where they do a certain task which allows them to return to the center with a new teleporter active.
