I was a senior in high school the first time I read this book. I remember how I identified with the female protagonist. I love how strong she was,... I loved the fight that she had within her to survive what she saw everyday, despite her fears. Besides that, she had an absolutely gorgeous name. Aislinn is a very exotic name to a country bumpkin from Texas! This book was the book that introduced me to the differences between the Summer and Winter courts. Wicked Lovely holds a very special place in my heart, for sure.
It has been fifteen years since I first read this book, which meant that before I could discuss it with y'all,... well it seemed pertinent that I revisit the world of Melissa Marr.
The prologue of Wicked Lovely was just as engrossing as I remembered. It was the perfect hook to pull a reader in and keep them turning the pages to find out what happened to the lovestruck girl. Unfortunately, this is also where I feel that the author made their first mistake. **POSSIBLE SPOILER** The male character, Keenan (who is named in the prologue), is portrayed as an enigma from the start. The first page talks of the pain within his eyes when looking upon the girl, but less than a page later abandons her without a glance backwards. Throughout the book, the relationship between these two characters is something of a battle. This reader had a desire to pop them both over the head with a sharp stick.
Another detail that stood out to me and broke through my rose colored glasses of time past was that as I was reading, I would feel as if I was trying to play catch up to the information within the book. At times, I felt as if Wicked Lovely was book 1.5 of the series and I had missed a novella that was meant to be read prior to starting this one. It detracted from the book because it pulled me forcefully out of the story. I would turn back pages or even chapters trying to figure out why I felt lost.
Regardless, I did enjoy rereading Melissa Marr’s literary work! I also found out that this was technically the first book in a series! There are four more books in the Wicked Lovely series,... yes! FOUR MORE BOOKS!
