It was surprisingly easy to fall in love with Mel.
After the fourth, they were stuck together like glue. Frank always tagged along on her cases, even if they didn’t need an r3 and r4 on them. Mel liked to come find him over the other senior residents when he was free. They ate lunch together in the break room, sitting on the same side of the table. Often, Ellis or Robby would walk in and raise their brows at them, but it never bothered either of them.
Frank could always pass it off as Mel being one of the only ones to support him after he came back, but then she started inviting him over and he would bring her out to dinner after their shared shifts, or bring her tea and a pastry in the mornings.
It all came to a head five months after he came back. He’d never forget the way Mel had dragged him forward, the way she whined into his mouth, and the way she came so prettily for him.
Now, Frank is parked in front of Mel’s apartment, and she’s on his lap, fingers clenching on his scrub top. Her mouth is warm and wet, and she keeps making these little sounds in the back of her throat.
“Baby… Mel, baby,” Frank manages to detach himself from her, “It’s my turn to put the kids to bed tonight, I have to go.”
She whines and kisses him again. He presses his thumb hard at the hinge of her jaw, and pushes his tongue against hers. He pulls away again after a few more minutes.
Mel pouts now, her lower lip sticking out and shaking. He pushes it back. “I’m sorry, I know. I’ll have to figure out something so we can get some real alone time, yeah?”
Mel nods, but she won’t meet his eyes as she crawls off his lap and gathers her things up.
I love you, he wants to say, but he doesn’t think she’d take it all that well right now. Instead he grabs her hand and squeezes it.
The house is eerily still when he gets in.
He doesn’t think too hard about it as he’s taking his shoes off, at least not until he steps into the house and sees Abby. She’s sitting completely straight, fuming, and holding her phone tightly.
“You good?” Frank questions, confused and cautious.
“Do you want to explain what the fuck this is?”
Frank blinks at the screen. There’s a message from an unknown number, one he recognizes as Mel’s, what the fuck, and it contains only two photos.
The first is one of Frank asleep on her chest, the sheet keeping her modest, but it’s clear what they just got done doing. The second is a positive pregnancy test, what the fuck.
“Abby, I-” He tries, but nothing comes out.
When it’s clear he’s not going to say anything else, she starts screaming. He hasn’t seen her this mad since they were in college. She practically shoves him out the door, with nothing but the clothes he’s wearing.
In the car he dials Mel’s number, but it goes straight to voicemail.
Instead, he gets a text. Doors open it reads, like she hasn’t considered he might stay somewhere else.

Once upon a time, Mel thought she’d be perfectly content to never have sex again. It had been fine, mostly. Routine and mechanical, nothing to write home about.
But that was before Frank spun her world off its axis, showed her what sex was actually supposed to be like.
It was like a switch flipped inside her. For the first six months of their relationship, it was all Mel wanted to do. Every spare moment was spent in bed—trying new positions, exploring desires, the true meaning of pleasure. Learning each other, body and soul.
Over time, the amount of sex naturally decreased as they settled into everyday life, though their “baseline normal” remained higher than average.
That was, until Mel got pregnant.
She understood the science behind increased libido in pregnancy: in addition to hormonal shifts, increased blood flow to the pelvic region creates increased sensitivity. Mel assumed she’d have a slight, manageable increase in desire, which Frank would be more than happy to help her satisfy.
She was so wrong.
It manifested physically first—a constant thrumming beneath her skin, persistent pulsing between her legs, incessant wetness in her underwear.
Then, it hijacked her brain. Before long, sex was all she could think about, regardless of time or place. It got so bad, she started zoning out during shifts, focus and fantasies fighting for control.
She hadn’t expected it to completely overwhelm her like this. This wasn’t just horniness. It was desperation, delirium, desire spun out of control.
Today’s shift was rough. She’d spent most of it clenching her thighs together, imagining Frank eating her out in the supply closet. Fucking her in the back of an ambulance. Riding him atop the breakroom table.
She completed handoff and made it home in record time, desperate for release.
When she got home, she found Frank on the couch.
“Hey sweetheart, how was your shift?”
Mel wordlessly beelined toward him, climbing into his lap for a rough kiss. He grabbed her ass as she ground her hips against his, sucking on her tongue.
“You need it, baby?” Frank purred.
Mel keened. They made quick work of their clothing and her glasses, getting Mel into position.
“Yessss,” Mel hissed as she sank down. “Been thinking about this all day. Need you so bad, Frank,” Mel moaned as she bounced on his cock, Frank fondling her breasts.
“God baby, you’re soaked.” Frank moaned, mesmerized at the feel of her, how gorgeous her belly looked between them.
Already, Mel felt herself tightening around him. “Frank, help me, I need…”
He pulled her hips down harder against his, thumbing at her clit. It only took a few more thrusts before she shattered, Frank right behind her, riding out the aftershocks together.
They had sex again an hour later, Frank taking Mel from behind, bent over the kitchen table.
Later, in bed, Mel bit her lip suggestively.
“Again?” Frank asked in disbelief. Mel giggled, already moving to straddle him.
Day 31-Balloon | Exact WC 313 | ao3 | @kingdonmicrofic
When Mel told Trinity that she was pregnant, you would have thought a spider landed on her head with the way she screamed into the phone.
“No fucking way,” Trinity screeched, standing up off the couch.
“Yes,” Mel squealed back, “Yes way!”
“Aw man,” Trinity huffed, her tone playful in a way that Mel would know she wasn’t being serious. “Another Langdon running around? Why must you torture me?”
“Oh stop it,” Mel laughed. “You can’t act like you hate him anymore.”
Just then, a brilliant idea popped into Trinity’s head.
“Can I plan your gender reveal?”
“Uh,” Mel thought it out. “I don’t know if we were really planning–”
“Nothing crazy,” Trinity promised.
“Okay,” Mel agreed. “Then sure, you can.”
So, Trinity got to preparing.
When she got to the register she had a strange collection of items.
Black balloons, white confetti, shaving cream, and blue and pink food dye.
The day of the party, she filled the balloons with the white confetti.
One balloon however, was filled to the brim with dyed shaving cream.
“I’m gonna throw the balloons and you’re gonna try to pop them,” Trinity said to Mel and Frank as they sat on their patio chairs, thumbtacks in their hands, their friends and family watching from the crowd. “One is filled with blue or pink.”
They nodded, and Trinity started throwing. They popped them with ease, white confetti cascading down.
With a devious smirk, Trinity threw the last balloon at Frank.
This one though, didn’t float down slowly like the rest.
When he popped the balloon, blue shaving cream exploded out, covering his entire face and upper body. The crowd erupted into laughter at his expense.
“Well,” Mel giggled, watching Frank wipe the shaving cream off of his face before kissing him on the lips, whispering against them–
Rated G / Frank’s POV / unbeta-ed / Drabble I wrote on my lunch break / my attempt to add to melpreg summer
Frank causes undue concern. Mel is a candidate for Chief Resident. Dr. Robby thinks he’s got it all figured out, but really he doesn’t know anything at all. Does he ever?
—————————————————————
Dating hadn’t changed the way Mel and Frank behaved at work. At least, Frank thought, not in any way that affected their patients or their coworkers.
An occasional touch to her lower back while moving around in the trauma room, a soft hand on her elbow before splitting up to cover separate areas of the Hub, and a shared protein bar in the lounge didn’t really register on the Pitt’s rumor radar, as none of it was different than how they had behaved before, when they were just good friends. Even in the months before Frank’s divorce, they were close, and in the months after, they grew closer still.
Now that they were dating, it wasn’t immediately apparent to onlookers that anything had changed. Frank still wore an extra hair tie for her on the same arm that he wore his kids’ bracelets. He still told her to take a break when she got overwhelmed emotionally, and he still challenged her to take cases that forced her outside her comfort zone. He didn’t hover, or give the impression was receiving special treatment.
Occasionally, he would ask how she was holding up, but he did that for all of his residents and interns. Everyone knew Mel was his favorite resident of course, but he was always effusive about her professional achievements, especially once he made attending.
Dana may have been the only person who noticed when Mel stopped taking the bus to work. Frank had started picking her up and dropping her off before shifts, even when he wasn’t on. Nothing escaped Dana’s notice, but she didn’t comment.
When Mel’s name came up for Chief Resident, it was a rare honor for the ER. Usually the nominations fell to surgical candidates or the most senior neuro or ICU residents. Mel’s history of publishing, her work with disabled adults outside the ER, and her excellent patient reviews pushed her to the top of the list of candidates. Robby was ecstatic to potentially have a student from the Pitt win the race. The last time an ER resident at PTMC had been bestowed the honor of chief, the recipient had been Dr. Adamson in the early 90s.
Everyone knew how proud Frank was of Mel, which was why they were all shocked when Frank recused himself from the Chief Resident voting process at an ER attending meeting held in the break room.
“Why, Frank?” Abbott asked. “I thought you were friends with Mel. Don’t you want this for her?”
“Is this because you give her rides to work?” Dana squinted at him. Even though her and Lena weren’t attending’s, they were still invited to all ER attending meetings as a matter of principle. “I don’t think that being her chauffeur qualifies as a conflict of interest.”
“You give her rides to work?” Robby asked, flabbergasted. “I thought Mel had a car.”
“Says the man who parks his motorcycle in the ambulance bay,” Shen interjected. “If you were a plebeian like the rest of us, you’d know exactly which residents have and don’t have cars. You know I had to sell my soul to get a spot in the resident commuter lot as an R4.”
“I’m still in the resident commuter lot,” Frank grumbled. “And I’m an attending!”
“Hey, hey,” Dana interrupted. “That wasn’t the question. Why are you recusing yourself, hon?”
“Mel and I are dating. Pretty sure that’s a conflict of interest,” Frank said simply, without an air of stress. “I’m actually surprised none of you have figured it out yet.”
Robby stood up and walked to a window, hands behind his head.
“How long?” Robby asked, his voice thin.
“Oh boy,” Abbott muttered. “Let’s clear out before this gets dramatic.”
Shen grabbed his Dunkin and followed him out of the room, glancing back over his shoulder, curious.
Dana sat still. Lena quietly packed up where she had been taking notes. “Are you staying?” She asked Dana over her glasses.
Dana nodded. She crossed her arms pensively.
Lena slipped out and then it was just the three of them.
“How long?” Robby repeated. From where Frank sat he couldn’t properly see his face.
“Nine months,” Frank replied honestly.
“Nine months?” Robby’s voice cracked, to Frank’s horror.
“Yeah, right after the school year started,” Frank rushed to fill in details before Robby could totally lose it on him. “I promise it was all above board, we started dating before I made attending, and well after the divorce. I promise it never interfered with our work, I never gave her special treatment, we never did anything inappropriate at work and we were gonna file paperwork with HR after she got her promotion for this year.” Frank combed his fingers through his hair, distressed.
“The Chief Resident nomination sort of came out of nowhere though, and she wanted to wait until the application process was over.” Frank admitted. “I care so much about her career, I would never do anything to endanger that for her. I swear, I’m only telling you now because I don’t want anyone to say that she doesn’t deserve this. That she didn’t do it of her own merit. She works so goddamn hard and I won’t jeopardize that for her. So yes, I’ll recuse myself, so no one can say shit.”
Frank sat at the table with Dana, watching Robby, who shifted from foot to foot, still holding his gaze out the window. When he dropped his arms to his sides and turned around, Dana stifled a small gasp and covered her mouth. There were tears on his face.
“Frank,” Robby smiled through the tears. “I’m so glad that you’re not using again.”
“What?!”
Dana reached across the table and squeezed Frank’s arm. “You’ve been acting weird, kiddo.”
“I swear,” Robby choked out. “We were two days away from holding a fucking intervention.”
“No fucking way,” Frank stood, shaking off Dana, his chair squeaking back across the linoleum. “I’ve been sober for almost three years. I wouldn’t throw that down the drain.”
“We know kid,” Dana soothed. “But we didn’t know about Mel, and well, it’s been a strange year.”
“It has not.”
Robby laughed then, a huge belly laugh with tears continuing to stream down his face. “You’ve been a hermit since September. You haven’t even come to trivia night in ages. Abby doesn’t know what you spend your free time doing anymore and we thought the worst. I thought you were using and hiding it from us again. Oh. Man, I suck at knowing what’s going on with you.”
Dana pursed her lips. “Frank you disappear after your shift as soon as you can, and I called Abby. You only do school pickup on your days off, so that wasn’t a good excuse and I knew you were lying when you told me that. We knew something was up, we just didn’t know what. The last time you were cagey about something like this, it was because you were doing drugs.”
Frank looked at her in horror. Had he been so obvious?
“Do you know,” Robby continued. “I was going to have Santos take Mel’s shift the day we staged the intervention? So she wouldn’t have to see you get upset?”
“I appreciate that, I guess,” Frank grumbled.
Ronny went on, “I guess I had all of the puzzle pieces, but I still couldn’t put the whole picture together. What kind of medical professionals are we, Dana? If we can’t diagnose a basic case of love sickness, who can?” He gesticulated wildly, clearly upset with himself.
“Leave me out of it,” Dana protested, standing to open the door. “You’re the doctor, you’re supposed to know what you’re talking about.”
Lena, Abbott and Shen were standing and chatting right outside. They turned towards the door as it opened. “You can all come back in, it’s safe,” Dana quipped. “No heads were bitten off.”
Abbott stuck his head in. “Do you need someone to drive Langdon to rehab? Or can we go find on call rooms to crash in until our shift starts?”
“Rehab?” Frank twisted around to look at Robby, who was hugging himself and shaking his head at the floor.
“You don’t want to know what strings he had me pull to line up a room in a private facility for you,” Lena said helpfully, from the doorway.
“Thanks, Lena,” Robby said, chagrined. “But I was wrong, Dr. Langdon is not going to be needing their help. So, I’ll call them back and tell them to give the bed to someone else.”
Shen walked up to Frank. ““Glad you’re still sober, by the way.” he offered him a fist bump which Frank accepted, gratefully. “You be good to Mel. Or else.” Or not so gratefully.
Abbott chirped him from the doorway. “Hey.That’s my line.”
Robby shook his head again. “Actually it’s not any of yours, as Mel is not actually anyone’s daughter or sister here, but if she was, she would be mine, as this is my ER, and Frank.”
Frank turned back to him. “Yeah?”
Robby laughed again, a dry chuckle. “Treat her well. She’s a great doctor, and a better person.”
Frank rolled his eyes. “Don’t you guys think I know that?”
Dana smiled at him and patted him with a clipboard on the shoulder. “We know. It bears reminding though. You mess with that girl, we got a problem.”
Frank rubbed the back of his neck. “I guess I should tell Mel the cat’s out of the bag then. I know she probably didn’t want the wholedepartment to find out like this, but then she hates the idea of being unethical as well. So it’s a catch-twenty-two.”
“No,” Robby gestured for Shen to shut the door and for everyone to gather around. “It’s not.”
“Frank’s recusal will stay between us. I’ll tell the nomination committee that one doctor abstained, and I won’t tell them who or why. Frank and Mel’s relationship status stays between the people in this room until after the voting for Chief Resident has closed. If I hear a hint of chatter about this, I will personally track down the bean spiller and there will be consequences. Dr. King does a lot for this department, let’s not ruin her chances with gossip.”
Everybody nodded, and Robby clapped his hands together. “Well, that settles that, let’s move on. Dr. Al-Hashimi sends her regards from the program she’s running in Sudan. I’m sure you all will send her a note wishing her well. She plans on returning to us this fall…”
Frank tuned out the rest of the meeting, too stunned with relief to really comprehend it. It had been a blissful few months with Mel, and now really wasn’t the moment to tell everyone, but their relationship status was about to get even more complicated. As soon as the meeting was over he beelined straight to the single stall restroom to call Mel, who was at a doctor’s appointment.
“How did it go?” Frank asked, unable to mask his excitement.
Mel sighed happily. “Well. Really well. She estimates that I’m nine weeks. I saw the heartbeat, Frank. It’s real. This is really happening.”
“I couldn’t be a happier man, Mel. Truly, you’re the light of my life, and I’m so excited to be a father again. I wish I could have been there with you today.”
“We haven’t even told HR yet,” she defended. “I know you wanted to come, but how would you have justified the time off?”
“Actually,” Frank admitted. “I may have told all of the attendings in the ER about us today. I didn’t say anything about the baby, of course.”
“What?” Mel squawked.
“I had to recuse myself from the vote for Chief Resident.”
Mel was silent for a moment. “I guess, you needed to be honest. And I wouldn’t have wanted you to lie for me.”
“Of course, baby,” Frank soothed. “Robby made them promise not to tell anyone. At least not until the job is yours.”
“Really?” Mel asked. “They would do that for me?”
“Mel,” Frank sighed. “They all threatened me. I think each of them would take a bullet for you. Or at least beat me up in the hospital parking lot for you.”
“Ugh, that’s such toxic male peacocking. I miss Dr. Al-Hashimi. She would have said something nice to you.”
“That’s optimistic,” Frank asserted. “She probably would have given me the stink eye and said something laced with judgement.”
“I’ve never seen that side of her,” Mel defended. “She’s always so nice to me.”
“Well of course,” Frank teased. “You’re her favorite resident. And mine.”
“Francis,” she scolds with the shake of her head, yet a fond smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. The oven’s residual heat slinks further into the kitchen, blanketing them. His eyes twinkle mischievously in the golden afternoon sunlight, sparkling like two little cerulean oceans. “Impatience gets you nowhere.”
His lips smack together after cleaning the frosting from his fingertip. “On the contrary, Melissa,” he teases in a gentle tone, head tilting. “I think anything gets me anywhere with you.”

Week 38
Mel knew that labor was painful, thanks to the many women coming into the ER in active labor, creaming and crying as they gave birth. What she hadn’t known until now, though, was how painful it was.
The five hours she’d spent on her hospital bed, plus the night of contractions at home were giving her a more precise idea of the level of pain of giving birth.
“Baby’s pulse is strong,” the L&D nurse announced.
“Dilated at 9,” the doctor added. “You’ll soon be ready to push!” she told Mel with a smile, according to her birth plan that stated she wanted to be told everything, good like bad.
For now, despite the pain—she didn’t want the epidural—everything had gone smoothly.
On her right, Frank tightened his hold on her hand. He looked almost worst than her, with his hair sticking out and the bags under his eyes. He hadn’t slept a bit since she’d woken him up after a particularly strong contraction.
“Keep going, Sweetheart, you’re doing well.”
“I’m so tired,” she moaned. “There’s so much going on.”
“I know. I’m here, okay? Focus on me, and listen to your body. Take a deep breath.”
After four breaths, she was feeling a little better. Until the next contraction. Frank helped her between each, soothing her through the pain, until the doctor announced she was at ten.
“Time to push, Dr. King!”
“The baby’s heartbeat is still good!”
Within five contractions, Mel knew why it was called “delivery”, as she pushed her baby out with a scream.
“Here she is, your little girl!”
“September 14th, 2029, 11:25.”
Falling back on the bed, tears rolling on her cheeks, she heard the first cries of her daughter and Frank’s soft praise as he dried the sweat on her face.
“Can you bring her to me?” she finally asked.
“Really?” His eyes were shining, and a wide smile bloomed on his lips when she nodded.
He was openly crying when he got to take care of her, while Mel delivered the placenta and two nurses helped her into a new gown.
Finally, Frank brought her a small bundle. “She’s perfect,” he breathed, placing the baby on Mel’s chest.
She was so tiny and soft, and when she opened her blue eyes, Mel was swept by a wave of love for this being she’d waited for all those weeks.
“Hi, little Helen, I’m your Mom, and this is your Dad. Welcome to the world,” Mel greeted her, smiling through her tears.
Helen closed a minuscule fist around Frank’s pinkie, and promptly fell asleep.
There was nothing worse than the gut drop. As the blindingly obvious came into focus. Mel had waited for what felt like an eternity for herself and Javadi to finish up with a patient. No one noticing her suddenly silent and shook frame.
Quickly snatching something out of of the stock room she darted into the women’s bathroom.
Breast soreness. Increased sized. Mel cupped her boobs experimentally. Yeah they were definitely more sensitive. Even for her already heightened baseline. She hadn’t complained, he hadn’t complained. She quickly peeled off her jacket and top. The increased sensitivity all the more obvious in the cold air. Mel flicked through a private folder. Examining photos of her boobs from a few months ago. Yeah there were obvious changes. Ones she should have notices.
Areola’s larger, darker. Oh thumbing her nipples was a bad idea. At work. The ripple of lust absolutely not needed. She was work and she and Frank had rules about fucking at work. Too many close calls. Her phone buzzed quietly in her lap.
