Merlin vs Meliodas would be catastrophic because it'll be one of the most emotional fight of the serie. Meliodas would probably have the upperhand at first thanks to FullCounter but like we've seen with MelvsVivian Merlin would have many ways to bypass it. I think it would end up to be an endurance fight (both mental and physical). I want to see the repercusion of the fight. What if Mel kill Merlin (or the contrary)? How would they deal with that? And if they both survive how do they handle it ?

Right, like theoretically he can bat any spell she throws at him right back at her, but she has her own advantages. The hard thing is that they’re familiar with how they fight, they know their moves.  

Meliodas is much more durable than Merlin (I think one good hit from him would wreck her) but he’s also more regular and thus easy for her to counter or avoid. Their abilities are not the same, but overall they are extremely well matched. They’d devastate the environment with missed attacks and neither of them would have a scratch. 

Like you said, it’s a war of attrition: who makes a mistake first? Who reacts just a little too slow, leaving the opportunity to land a hit? If at any point Merlin or Meliodas switches to pure defense, they’ve lost.

When the dust settles, though, I don’t know that either of them would be able to strike a finishing blow. Merlin does not have any moral qualms about murder, she might even prepare a spell to try, but emotionally I don’t think she could follow through. Meliodas would refuse to kill her if she was incapacitated and could no longer hurt anyone/continue to orchestrate the return of Chaos. 

If she forces him to go all-out to fight her, however, I don’t know how much control he has over how hard his attacks hit. Between the direct hit and her subsequent fall to the ground (because she’d definitely be flying), she could die. Powerful as she is, Merlin is still human. She’s breakable. 

Mel would hate himself, of course, because when does he not? I think he would be very solemn about it. Land beside her, hold her tenderly as she dies. Offer her silent comfort, because for a minute all the wounds they’ve carved on each other in three thousand years have disappeared and it’s just them. The real them, the one that only they know, and neither of them need say a word to know right then that some of it was real. Merlin breathes his name, he tells her it’s okay. These are their apologies. He gives her a kiss on the cheek before she dies. 

The Lady of the Lake wants her body in the waters, but Meliodas takes her body in his arms and walks away without a word. None of the other Sins are present when he and Elizabeth bury her on a hillside by the ocean.
