I don't know how many followers are European because this is an account that follows US issues. But I saw a post on Reddit that screenshot an American that was like "my grandfather is 1/2 Norwegian so I'm basically Norwegian" in response to the Norwegian pride at the FIFA tournament and the Norwegians were absolutely grilling her like "Why do you Americans do this? You're American, you'll never be Norwegian."

So. If someone can get me to the Europeans. I'll explain why we do this.

1) White guilt. My parents went to segregated schools. Before segregation it was slavery and killing off the native Americans. Like. There's NOTHING about American history to be proud of. So a lot of white people here dont want to be associated with it.

2) White supremacy and the one drop rule. Do you ever notice what nationalities these people claim? English. Norwegian. French. All very white nationalities. You ever notice that? The only time they claim anything not white is when they want to act persecuted. "I'M 1% BLACK ON MY FATHER'S SIDE SO THIS IS A HATE CRIME". Like no one here claims to be Polish or something. They're trying to prove how white they are.

3) White supremacy. Again. I mean obviously you know viking culture is appropriated by white supremacists. They're trying to claim a right to your cultures they're appropriating so that they can... be shitty.

4) They don't consider American an Ethnicity. You do. They don't. They see a brown person walking around, they're like "Where you from? No, where are your parents from? No, where are your grandparents from? No, where are your people from?" It doesn't matter if her name is Sarah Smith, and her family has lived in Detroit for 16 generations and even founded a city there and she speaks better English than them. They don't consider her American.

5) I think very few of us consider "American" as a nationality. You say "we're from a different country we're raised with different values". Our value is that we're raised that the United States is a melting pot of a lot of cultures. I know it's REALLY HARD to believe when everyone is so scared of brown people all the time. But it shapes our cultural identity as not strictly "American" but a combination of a lot of other pieces. We even have to do a huge project where we create a family tree, figure out where we're from. We fucking love family trees (Black people do get a partial exemption on this project).

6) There's this movement (though not large) to leave and return the land to Native Americans. Because England to Scotland? That's Americans to Native Americans. And where do you think we'd go if we left? Just anywhere? Become stateless? We'd figure out where our ancestors are from and "return" there.

So you may consider us "American. That's your nationality." We're raised with different values. We value ourselves not as Americans, but a mixture of other cultures. That means, there's a lot of cultural appropriation and claiming of other nationalities going on. I'm aware it's probably weird as shit to you, but we really do see ourselves as people that stole this land from Native Americans. We just don't fucking care that much. (And those of us that hold a lot of white guilt want to know where our ancestry comes from because that's where we'd return to when we leave.)

I mean I can't apologize if you don't like it. I can only try to explain to you, how we're raised and our "values". (Though I do see how it's weird as shit to you. Even the quietest most reserved American here is like loud and obnoxious to the standards of some of these actually reserved countries. We are quite boisterous and take up a lot of metaphorical room.)
