Me Made May 2014
In some ways May feels like it has been a long one and in others it has flown by, the length might have something to do with trying to wear handmade as much as possible. I really prefer to just wear handmade when I want to, and over the years that has increased more and more, which I'm pleased about.
The start of the month was pretty easy when I was at work. I have made a lot of work dresses over the last few years. But the weekends were more difficult, I have less casual items that I have made and when I got to a week off, then I was a bit stuck.
Someone mentioned gaps in your handmade wardrobe, and mine is definitely casual. I mainly make items that I can't get hold of or want in a different colour or style. I tend to be able to find things to wear casually in the shops fairly easily and cheaply, so somethings aren't worth making, like little stretch tops, skinny jeans etc, things that I wear at the weekend. And over the years I have built up a bit of a collection of casual dresses that I rather like, so wouldn't want to get rid of them just to replace them with handmade, that wouldn't really make sense. Plus when you can buy a jersey skater dress from Primark for £5 or £2 on sale, why would I go to the trouble of finding fabric, pattern and spending all that time making it?!! It is a bit of a dilemma.
It's not like I'm gunna stop making, I have loads of plans and maybe gradually I will get more casual handmades. I do have summer skirts and dresses that are casual that I have made and a wrap dress from jersey, no doubt there will be more of these to come.
So what did I wear in May:
Two handmade jumpers:
Socks:
A skirt:
blouse:
and lots of dresses:
So lots of work dresses and not so much weekend wear.I still have a lot of handmade in my wardrobe that has gone unworn in May, but some is summery or too wintery or just not appropriate for wear I was going. I had no occasion for a fancy dress or a little summery one.
