Hey, I was directed by @memeneato to ask which comics I would have to read to get into Stephanie Brown
Cool cool, my dude. So the problem with writing a reading list~ for a minor character like Stephanie Brown is that she pops up in a lot of stories that aren’t her own as a secondary character. If I told you to read x issue just because she pops up in it, it’ll be kinda… confusing. At least, I always find it confusing.
So background on Steph: she’s the daughter of a B-list villain, the Cluemaster, and became the Spoiler in order to stop him. in the last 25-ish years, she’s been Spoiler, the fourth Robin and the ~fourth Batgirl (fourth if you count Helena Bertinelli). She also had a teen pregnancy, but gave up her child for adoption.
The only series where she was actually the main character was her run as Batgirl from 2009-2011. This is really one of the few comics I recommend people read if you want to get to know Stephanie - mostly bc her other appearances are sporadic.
The rest of this is under a cut because booooy does this get long.
Her first appearance was in Detective Comics #647-649 in 1992. Which would definitely be good to read as an entry point. From there she goes on to feature regularly as Spoiler in Robin v4, Batgirl v1 (she’s regularly associated with Tim and Cass), as well as Gotham Knights (#22-37 I think?).
As for her run as Robin: … War Games? Which is The Worst but quite a big part of her story. She pops up in lots of comics for her really short run as Robin, but all that I really remember other than War Games is that one issue of Teen Titans v3 where Superboy shows up and is all ‘YOU AREN’T THE REAL ROBIN’ and is all round a jerkass to her.
Her run as Robin was short and, I’m not gonna lie, not very good. Mostly bc no one trusted her enough with secrets which got her *SPOILERS*.
So, apart from her own comic when she was Batgirl, she also featured in Red Robin (#9-12) and Bruce Wayne: The Road Home where she punches Bruce in the face. That’s a must read. She’s also in Batman Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes!
in the New 52: she’s reintroduced in Batman Eternal (where she’s featured quite a bit), and then she has a few appearances in Batgirl of Burnside, Batman and Robin Eternal, etc. She’s in Catwoman for a bit too, but I… did’t actually read New 52 Catwoman…
Currently, she’s featured in Detective Comics, which is a bimonthly (as in, twice a month) series, starting from the first issue in the rebirth era (#934).
Good luck with it all, my dude. Stephanie Brown is one of my fave characters, and I love her very much. Don’t be too disheartened if you think that there’s a lot of reading to do. Honestly, just read her intro, her run as Batgirl, and probably Batman Eternal, leading to the new Detective Comics, if you’re going to continue reading current ongoing comics.
Also, you’re always welcome to come into my ask box to yell about her with me.
