“Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Sometime I wonder, why can’t more people just decide to quit drinking or stop being in abusive relationships. Why can’t more people just ‘Snap out of it’? Why don’t more people just take Nike’s advice and go ahead and do it!
The problem lies in the fact that we use the word decision interchangeably with making a ‘wish list’ or stating a preference. A decision involves making a commitment to follow through, to take action, . The word ‘decision’ comes from the Latin roots de, which means “from”, and caedere, which means ‘to cut’.
The ancient Greek warriors were some of the toughest fighters of the time. It wasn’t so much their training or their weapons or their tactics. It was their unwavering commitment to win. When they would arrive on enemy shores, the first orders from their commanders would be to “burn the boats.” And they did. They torched their boats. There was no turning back. There was no retreat. No surrender. The only way out was forward. Victory - no other outcome.
True decisions give us clarity and empowers us to take action. May be there is not a big enough ‘why’ behind some of our decisions. Or perhaps our decision making capabilities are a bit rusty. We all make decisions, even when we are not...aren’t we? The difference between good and bad decisions lies in been able to make distinctions.
As we make more decisions, we gain the knowledge of making distinctions. Distinction is that one quality, tool, belief etc that has an immediate impact on our life.
I am not sure when distinction clicks or sinks in life, it differs for everyone. But if one remains conscious it definitely happens and it is this moment that turns our life around. So flex your decision making muscles and review the outcomes often.
Please share if you had any moments of ‘snapping out of it’....or simply doing it.
