in another universe, she is the sun and he is the moon. intertwined. fated. bonded. they were written in the stars that he once loved to gaze at, learning their names and their stories so that one day he could teach them to others. maybe even go to space and meet whoever had embedded them within the night sky.
but that wouldn’t happen in this universe.
in another universe, they are two cross roads. two sides of the same coin. a gamble. a risk. her road leads to the greatest fortune, his leads to tragedy. they begin on the same path, but their choices lead them to different outcomes. maybe one day, overtime, their paths would dissolve into one and they would bring happiness to everyone who came across them.
but that wouldn’t happen in this universe.
in another universe hanako was human, just like yashiro. in the same grade, in the same class. amane would be sat in the chair behind her, whispering the answers she didn’t know. he’d help her with her math homework, and in return she’d help him with his english. he’d muster up the courage to ask her to see a movie— hamsters in space to be exact. their two interests fused together perfectly. she’d say yes, of course, and after the movie he would take her to a spot where you could see stars so clearly that you wouldn’t even need a telescope. either way he’d bring one, teach her how to use it, and whisper to her about the stars that shone down on them, twinkling in glee.
but that wouldn’t happen in this universe.
not when yashiro was laid limp in the honourable number seven’s arms in a classroom with the kid staring at the two in horror. nobody could’ve possibly known how short yashiro’s life span was— aside from hanako, of course. he had known from the beginning, promising himself he wouldn’t get attached to the girl who laid so vulnerable in his arms. he was too far gone. too deep in devotion to go back now. all he wanted was to protect her. save her because he couldn’t save himself. was that too much to ask?
the kid says something, at least hanako thinks he hears something. noises blur together like the static from an old radio and hanako can’t quite decipher whether he needs to move. his grip on yashiro tightens, bringing her close to his chest. it wasn’t fair. she has so much to live for. she has a prince to meet, a wedding to plan, children to have, and so many hamsters to name. he wouldn’t let her lose that— he promised.
her limp body was as light as a feather compared to the guilt that weighed him down. his horror consumed him as he wished he could’ve done more to save her. he felt the fear of losing her eat away at his spirit. it made him shiver— he couldn’t let her leave like this.
they were bonded through life and through death, but hanako refused to move on to his true afterlife when there was still hope for yashiro’s to stay and live a lifetime. his grip on this reality was tight, desperate. if he could hold on, then she could too. he wouldn’t allow her to go, he couldn’t. who would clean his bathroom? who would change the rumours? who would make him laugh for the first time in fifty years?
in another universe, she is the sun and he is the moon. intertwined. fated. bonded. they were written in the stars that, in another life, they would gaze up at together. he was convinced the stars only shone as bright because they were inspired by her beauty. he’d lasso all the stars from the sky and choose the best seamstress to sew them into a wedding gown suited for her. he wouldn’t need the glittering sky as long as he could see the constellations in her eyes. he wouldn’t need a rocket to take him to space as long as he could feel his heart soar whenever she smiled. he’d wait at the altar for her, no matter how long it would take her to walk down that isle.
but that wouldn’t happen in this universe.
