you yawn softly, hugging the pillow as you lay on the sofa, waiting for your lovely boyfriend to come home. it was almost 6:30am, meaning he’d finished work nearly half an hour ago and you were definitely ready to go to bed. you both decided to take night shifts so that you were still synced and could spend time with each other, yet your work ended at 5:30 and was significantly closer to your apartment than mike’s.
just as your eyes begin to flutter shut and you start to give in to sleep, you hear the apartment door open and shut. the lock clicks and keys are slung into the bowl you have at the side of the door.
“mh.. mike? is that you?” you call out softly, tiredness evident in your voice. someone walks into your bedroom, you recognise the footsteps immediately. you listen to the sound of clothes ruffling before he carefully climbs into bed beside you.
“sorry love, work traffic,” mike kisses your head, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you close. “how was work?”
you sigh, resting your head on his chest. “it was alright, some of the guests were rude but i suppose that’s normal if they’re coming in with jet lag..”
he laughs quietly, and you feel his chest rise and fall with every huff of air he lets out.
“yeah i suppose so,” he moves one of his hands to gently grab your face, littering kisses all over it. you scrunch your face up in retaliation and let out soft giggles.
it was the quiet, playful moments like these that reminded you why you fell in love with michael in the first place. he had been a rebellious child, which led to you babysitting his siblings for him often, however he was never too late coming home so he could protect you from his father. back then, he displayed his care through protection. but now? you receive his love through gentle kisses in the early hours of the morning.
your lips on his are his favourite feeling. you’re like a drug to him, one he will never get enough of. he melts in your touch, and he’s never felt as safe as when he’s in your arms.
you wake up alone the next morning, however the smell of bacon and eggs fills your senses and that alone makes you smile. you slowly pull yourself out of bed, not bothering to dress or brush your hair. making your way down the corridor, the smell gets stronger as you enter the kitchen.

your summer job working at fredbear’s family diner wasn’t the best, and the pay wasn’t that great either, but at least you had a job. you had been running around all day cleaning tables, serving food, and kicking arcade machines until they worked.
finally, at 12:30, you had your mandatory 30 minute break (as fredbear’s couldn’t afford another law suit..) and you immediately grabbed your pizza that the people working kitchen had saved for you. sitting down at a nearby table, you let out a deep sigh, finally free of annoying children for the next half hour.
“simon stop!! give him back!!”
‘oh for fucks sake.’ you roll your eyes, shutting the pizza box with your name on and walking towards the pleas of woe you recognised all too well.
“oh come on crybaby!! you’re almost 8! shouldn’t you be done with baby toys?”
simon artez was a dick in every sense of the word. you knew him through school, and the bonnie mask he used to terrorise people, and that was enough. he also just so happened to be friends with michael afton, who is nowhere to be seen at this moment.
“he’s not a baby toy!! just give him back!”
“look simon!! he’s practically begging!”
marcus donnely, football captain and probably the reason the team hasn’t won a single game this year. his chica mask is slightly raised above his mouth so he can speak clearly, though his words are like venom. rumour has it that he’s banging the cheer captain, but it’s more than likely his co-captain that he’s in the janitor’s closet with…
“guys, maybe we shouldn’t be doing this without mike.. you know how he can get..”
you let out a small sigh of relief. jeremy fitzgerald, the art kid who tends to keep to himself. it wasn’t that you hated michael’s other friends, but jeremy was by far the favourite between them. you sat beside him in english last year and it was the best decision you ever made. his only flaw? the freddy mask that laid atop his head, out of use while the other boys tormented michael’s poor brother.
“are you guys done or..?” you step out from the wall you were hiding behind and fold your arms across your chest.
“looks like the crybaby has a girlfriend! isn’t she a little too old for you?” simon torments, causing marcus to snicker and jeremy to look off to the side, as if searching for someone.
michael’s brother gently taps your leg, so you crouch down to his level as the boys laugh and whisper.
“what’s wrong bud?” you ask softly, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“simon took fredbear.. and he says he’s gonna rip him up! and they keep shoving me when i try to grab him!” he explains, his voice wobbling and tears threatening to spill.
you sigh softly, turning around so your back is facing him.
“hop on, if you’re taller then they’ll be less mean..”
it was a lie, of course it was, but at least they wouldn’t be able to shove him if he was on your back. once you feel his weight, you grab his legs and his arms wrap around you instantly.
“just give him the bear back, it’s not like you didn’t have a childhood toy either,” you glare at the boys, conscious of the time as your break ends in about 15 minutes and you still hadn’t eaten your pizza.
“i had a fire truck, not a yellow soft bear like a damn pansy!” marcus exclaims and simon laughs, clutching his side with one hand as the other holds the bear in question.
out of the corner of your eye, you notice jeremy gesture for someone to come over, and you notice a person in the same uniform as you make their way over quickly. you try to get a good look at them, but you can’t move your head too much in fear of dropping the small boy on your back.
“what’s going on here?”
a smile creeps its way onto your face. michael afton had come to save the day.
“we were just telling your brother how much of a crybaby he is!” simon nudged marcus and he nodded, both of them smiling in mockery. jeremy stayed off to the side, a concerned look on his face.
“why are you doing that..?” mike sounded genuinely confused and slightly offended, which troubled you as normally he joins in on the teasing. his brother clings onto you tighter.
“because we do it all the time and needed some entertainment, obviously?”
“give him the bear back.”
“what? but dude-”
“did i stutter? am i speaking an alien language? give him the bear back.”
you slowly place the boy down as simon passes him the bear, and he immediately runs off to his sister who was playing in the ball pit with a girl you didn’t recognise.
“sorry man.. didn’t know you liked crybaby now.”
“i don’t, but that’s still my brother and i won’t stand there and watch you bully him without me making sure you don’t go too far.”
“whatever dude..” simon rolls his eyes, and with that he and marcus walk off to the arcade, yet jeremy stays behind.
“thanks for alerting me man, i appreciate it.” mike says, a slight smile on his face. jeremy simply nods, walking off to join the other boys.
mike then turns to you, a smug smile tugging on his lips.
“look at you, saving the day,” he chuckles, wrapping an arm around your shoulders.
“i wouldn’t call that ‘saving the day’, more like causing a distraction while waiting for the real hero..” you smile, leaning into him as you begin to walk back to your table where your pizza sat, growing colder by the second.
“you certainly distract me in that uniform..” he retorts, spinning a chair around and sitting down on it backwards.

at 6:30pm, mike had promised 2 hours at the most, and then he’d be straight home in time for his father coming back. it was now 9pm, and you were starting to get anxious. it’s not that you didn’t trust michael, of course you did. you had been friends since you were little, and nothing was going to change that. however, his father was a different story.
he was terrifying in every sense of the word.
he was an angry man with an even angrier temper. whenever he looked at you, you could just sense his judgment. his glare felt like a death sentence, and you certainly didn’t want your day of reckoning to come anytime soon.
you jump up the moment you hear the door open. michael or william? life or the worst of deaths? maybe you were being dramatic, or maybe you were underestimating the gravity of the situation. was anyone truly to know?
michael’s younger siblings lay asleep either side of you, and you pray to anything that might exist up in the sky that you didn’t wake them. elizabeth would be sure to snitch immediately, and you couldn’t have that.
william comes stumbling into the living room, and you gently lay your head atop michael’s younger brother’s to seem asleep. you stay so still, eyes shut. although you couldn’t see the man, you could still feel his glare of death. until you don’t.
the creaking of the stairs can be heard, but the steps don’t seem as heavy as william’s.
“heyyy dad!” mike slurs slightly, and you can hear him tripping over his own feet.
“michael.. why is your friend here? i thought i told you these people were bad influences.”
“i know i know.. i just needed help babysitting those two! you know how hyperactive liz gets, especially on a night,”
you continuing your staying still, not even daring to breathe. the silence in the room consumes you, swallowing you whole.
“so be it, just— get out of my sight, and take your friend with you,”
hearing william’s heavy footsteps walk away, presumably down to his office in the basement, you slowly move your head up.
“michael?” you whisper softly, turning your head slightly to look at him.
“if you take crybaby, i’ll take liz,” he says with a wide, smug smile.
“you really shouldn’t call him that, it hurts his feelings..”
“i think it suits him, now come on before my dad comes back from his circus downstairs..”
once you feel his sister’s weight being lifted off of you, you work on manoeuvring yourself in a way that prevents his brother from waking up as you lift him.
“his bedroom is the one with the rocket on the front right?” you ask softly, adjusting your hold on the young boy.
“yeah, once you’re done go straight to my room, just to avoid my dad talking to you,”
you nod, and slowly you both make your way up the stairs. you skip the 5th step, as that one’s the loudest when it creaks, eventually reaching the child’s room. you careful lay him under the covers, tucking him in and patting his head with a small smile. he looked so peaceful.
closing his door with a click, you quickly slip into the room next door. clothes strewn across the floor, dark red bedding in a heap at the end of the mattress, and the radio on the windowsill playing “upside down” by diana ross.
you had been in mike’s room hundreds of times before, and this was as clean as it gets really. you silently walk towards michael, who’s sat next to his open window.
“is that how you got in?” you ask curiously, slightly tilting your head with a smile.
“of course, didn’t you know i’m practically an expert in parkour?” mike retorts sarcastically, his signature smirk never faltering.
“you asshole! you said you’d be home before he got here! he could’ve beat my sorry ass!” you whisper yell, hyperaware of the sleeping children in the next room.
“hey! i showed up in time to save you, didn’t i? that’s what matters..” he trails off, looking down at his battered black converse.
you sigh deeply, nodding.
“yeah, i guess you did.”
his smug look reappears, and suddenly you’re tackled onto his messy bed.
“michael afton!! what on earth are you doing?!” you quietly yell, throwing a playful glare his way.
“easing the tension with some playful banter..?” he says slyly, his breath tickling your face.
for a moment, you simply stare at each other; and for a moment, you convince yourself everything is alright. you could see yourself getting used to being loved by michael afton, if only he’d allow you to love him back.
“you better go, my dad will probably be coming upstairs soon, and this time it will be my sorry ass he’s beating, not yours” mike says with a hollow chuckle, ruffling your hair and pushing off you.
“yeah.. yeah i probably should..” you say, slightly dazed.
mike offers you his hand and you take it, using it to pull yourself up. you don’t let go of his hand until you’re at the door. you lean in to kiss his cheek, yet you’re interrupted by the sound of footsteps and the front door being slammed in front of you.
mike had a black eye at school the next day, though his smug smile never changed when he looked towards you.
chuuya is lonely after dazai deflects, so what better thing to do than buy a fish or two?

dazai was dangerous. chuuya had been faced with the fact so many times, it practically screamed at him. it was always there. in the back of his mind. he had always known.
so when dazai deflected, and chuuya’s car was blown up, it felt like another tuesday. only this time, he couldn’t shout at him. he couldn’t grab him by the ear and tell him all he did wrong. he couldn’t even take something of dazai’s in retaliation. dazai was gone. all that remained was a first aid box that had been ransacked for its bandages.
chuuya drank a lot of wine that night.
it started with the small things. unconsciously moving to the right side of everyone who he works with. constantly making sure the first aid kit was stocked up with bandages, and getting confused when it actually was. it wasn’t until chuuya caught himself staring at the empty chair dazai used to fill during a particularly important executive meeting that he realised he needed something to change.
therefore, he did what any normal person would do and bought two koi fish.
one named mackerel— white with black splotches; one named hattie— bright orange. he had a large fish tank installed in his apartment, placing the two fish inside once their home was ready. he made sure everything suited their needs. he never fed them too little, nor did he feed them too much. and when he was abroad for missions? he would ask his most trusted subordinates to feed them for him.
eventually, two koi turned into two koi and three goldfish. and after that, he began to expand his aquatic pets even more. they were his and his only. no one could take them away, neither would they have to.
so you can imagine chuuya’s horror when he walked down the steps to the port mafia basement after a rather long mission, only to be met with that bandaged mackerel staring right back at him.
not the fish, of course, but the man. after 4 years, he was there. in front of him. it made chuuya’s blood boil. that fight was over quickly, of course, and ended in chuuya making a silly pose on the stairs. however, what he hadn’t expected was to walk into his apartment after a long day and see his aquarium empty. who the fuck kidnaps fish?
meanwhile, at the armed detective agency, kunikida stares horrified at the new fish tank dazai decided to buy with company money.

Waking up in the Afton House wasn’t the plan. At all. Especially waking up in Mike’s bed. You weren’t exactly keen on the idea last night, but looking into his big blue eyes you had no choice but to say yes. You were sure anyone would in your position. Michael Afton was not for the weak.
The door creaks open softly, and you shut your eyes pretending to still be asleep. “Psst! Mike! Mum and Dad are home early!” the quiet yet sweet voice of a sleepy Elizabeth calls from the doorway. Mike stirs slightly, groaning in annoyance.
“Liz get out of my room!” He says, and you feel the bed dip as he presumably sits up. Gentle hands shake you, and you open your eyes as if you hadn’t been listening.
“We didn’t.. did we?” Mike asks nervously. You bite back a laugh.
“Of course not, you were drunk!” You yell, face growing red at his implication.
“Ah.. right..” He trails off, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
You both sit there in Mike’s bed, the silence hanging over you. Truth be told, Mike had tried to kiss you the night before, but you had rejected his advances as he wasn’t in his right mind. He fell asleep on your chest a few minutes after.
“So.. Do you like toast?”
“What?”
“Do you like toast?”
“Yes I heard you.. why is that relevant to your parents coming home early?”
“Have breakfast with us.”
You open your mouth to protest but Mike places a finger on your lips, shaking his head. You stay quiet and watch him as he picks up the shirt he threw off the night before, throwing it at you.
“I have a shirt on.”
“Yeah but you wore that yesterday.”
“You wore this shirt yesterday, and you drank in it.”
“Just put it on!”
And for some stupid reason, you did. It was a ‘The Smiths’ shirt, a band you recognised to be one of Mike’s favourites. It brought a smile to your face that was quickly wiped off as you saw his smirk.
“Aww, don’t you look cute!”
“Oh lay off it!”
He bursts into loud laughter and pulls you off the bed, much to your dismay. One step closer and you’d be kissing him. You shake that thought away instantly, though your mind can’t help but wonder off to the previous night’s confession. Was it truly the alcohol talking? Could he even remember what he had said? As he looks down at you with so much tenderness, you’re certain there’s something more.
Then suddenly he’s pulling you out the door, him shirtless and you in his shirt, and you realise how bad this looks.
“Mike—“
“Shhh, I know, don’t worry about my dad he’s irrelevant, but my mum will love you.”
“That’s not what I—“
You reach the kitchen and your voice trails off. It’s too late now. Heat creeps onto your cheeks and embarrassment consumes you.
“Michael! You didn’t tell me you had your girlfriend over!” His mom exclaims, rushing over to you with a bright smile on her face.
He doesn’t correct her, so you don’t either.
“Come, sit with us. We don’t have much in the cupboards at the moment because I wasn’t expecting guests, is toast alright? Or cereal?”
“I—”
“She likes toast mum, it’s alright.”
His mom nods, walking back to the counter as Mike pulls you to sit in between himself and Liz, who was happily munching away at her cereal. You nervously lean against Mike, and he wraps a comforting arm around you.
“Sorry.. I forgot how full on she could be when I bring people over..”
“She called me your girlfriend,”
He stays silent.
“And you didn’t correct her.”
“Did I need to?”
You pause, he doesn’t miss a beat.
“I meant every word I said last night, I truly did. The only thing I regret is that I hadn’t said it to you sooner.”
Your eyes widen and you hear Liz gasp beside you. Neither of you say anything for a while, and suddenly two plates appear before you.
“Here’s your toast! I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me dear.” Mike’s mom says softly, and you smile at her kindness.
You eat in a comfortable silence, though Mike tightens his arm around you.
“Mike..”
“Shh don’t speak, I know I’ve ruined things now.”
“But you haven’t.
“I made you cry last night, that’s a bad sign.”
“You made me cry because I was so surprised you’d ever like someone like me, not because you’d upset me. Any girl would be over the moon to hear something like that, especially from you. You’re a dick, yes, but you’re so sweet with me that I wouldn’t want you any other wa—“
His lips were warm on your own. And soft. So soft. You revelled in them, wrapping your arms around his neck to keep him close. He faintly tasted of the orange juice he had just drank, making you smile into the sweet kiss. It lasted a few moments, but the memory would last eternity.

not when yashiro was laid limp in the honourable number seven’s arms in a classroom with the kid staring at the two in horror. nobody could’ve possibly known how short yashiro’s life span was— aside from hanako, of course. he had known from the beginning, promising himself he wouldn’t get attached to the girl who laid so vulnerable in his arms. he was too far gone. too deep in devotion to go back now. all he wanted was to protect her. save her because he couldn’t save himself. was that too much to ask?
the kid says something, at least hanako thinks he hears something. noises blur together like the static from an old radio and hanako can’t quite decipher whether he needs to move. his grip on yashiro tightens, bringing her close to his chest. it wasn’t fair. she has so much to live for. she has a prince to meet, a wedding to plan, children to have, and so many hamsters to name. he wouldn’t let her lose that— he promised.
her limp body was as light as a feather compared to the guilt that weighed him down. his horror consumed him as he wished he could’ve done more to save her. he felt the fear of losing her eat away at his spirit. it made him shiver— he couldn’t let her leave like this.
they were bonded through life and through death, but hanako refused to move on to his true afterlife when there was still hope for yashiro’s to stay and live a lifetime. his grip on this reality was tight, desperate. if he could hold on, then she could too. he wouldn’t allow her to go, he couldn’t. who would clean his bathroom? who would change the rumours? who would make him laugh for the first time in fifty years?

the first thing akemi did was sprint back to her class. despite promising hanako she wouldn’t tell anyone, she had to get back and walk home with himari!! she had promised to wait for her after all. it wasn’t long before akemi collided with someone’s hard back, sending her to the floor with a loud thud.
“s-sorry i should’ve been looking where i was going!!” akemi yells, her face flushed from embarrassment. a calloused hand reaches out to help her up, and it’s only then she realises who she’s bumped into. “oh my goodness minamoto-san im so sorry!!” she exclaims, taking his hand and allowing him to pull her up. “gahh this is so embarrassing!! i was just in such a hurry and—“
akemi’s flustered ramblings are interrupted by low laughter that makes her heart flutter. “kimura-san, you really have to be more careful,” minamoto haru says, and akemi can’t help but agree with him, nodding.
“i know i know.. i just really need to get to himari-chan so we can walk home together!!”
“aoi-san? she left a while ago, sorry kimura-san,” he says softly but akemi can’t even be mad. she gets to speak to the cutest guy in school, so walking home alone won’t be all bad.
“oh, thanks for telling me minamoto-san!! i’ll be sure to call her later instead, goodbye!” akemi calls out, waving as she walks away. a slight skip in her step as she leaves.
walking home alone wasn’t all bad. in fact, sometimes, akemi preferred it. at least this way she has time to think of a plan. confronting her okaasan would be hard, and she wasn’t really sure how she’d react. after all, she’d never even mentioned she could turn into a fish!! it still hurt akemi’s brain to think about, so she was set on seeing it with her own eyes.
spring had arrived, and so had the cherry blossoms on her street. everywhere she looked a beautiful pink blossom would be falling to greet her. a smile begin to creep onto her face— summer was close, and it brought akemi great excitement. the summer festival was the best time of the year. she remembers her okaasan telling her about how the bull once went charging into her— come to think of it, she’s pretty sure minamoto-senpai told her that instead.
arriving at her house with the little red door, she opens it with new found determination. operation: turn okaasan into a fish.
“mama!! i’m home!” akemi calls out, the childish word slipping out of her mouth before she can stop it.
“i’m in the kitchen! clean your hands and come help me! i’m making donuts!” her mama yells back, and akemi quickly takes her shoes off before rushing to the kitchen. she dumps her school bag beside the table, ensuring it doesn’t fall.
she slowly makes her way to the sink, running the water and lathering the soap to wash her hands. “so what’s it like being a fish?” akemi asks casually. nene doesn’t say anything. not even a word. she places the dough she was making on the flour-covered counter, staring at her blankly.
“are you hanging out with the wrong crowd at school? if you’re taking substances you need to tell me okay? your father and i can look into some support for you,”
“what?! i’m not high!! i’m asking a serious question!!”
“you asked what it’s like being a fish akemi, how would i even know?”
akemi pauses, looking at the floor and trying not to meet her okaasan’s eye. she can already feel them burning holes into her skull— that was more than enough for her.
akemi moves before she thinks.
only a splash could be heard. fortunately, it was only a small amount of water, though still enough for nene to react in a quick, mortified manner.
“akemi, go to your room,”
and that’s where akemi went.
she slams the door behind her, rolling her eyes. she knew she was being unreasonable, but she just couldn’t understand why her mama wouldn’t just tell her. akemi clearly knew the truth, it was just a case of trying to get nene to admit it. unless she was just hallucinating and simply imagined meeting a boy ghost in the girl’s bathroom. no— she saw how her okaasan reacted to the water. she saw that glint of panic, that flicker of worry. there was definitely something up, even if it wasn’t to do with her mama turning into a fish.
to say nene was horrified is an understatement. how had her daughter found out? had kou told her? he couldn’t have, he wasn’t stupid. had akemi told anyone else? she could only pray not. this was all just too much. she’d been so careful. she only showered when the house was free, allowing her to do it in a way that wouldn’t turn her into a tiny, scaly mess. she always wore rubber gloves when doing the washing up to prevent her skin from growing translucent bumps. she never went out when it was raining, choosing to call kou or aoi if she needed something. so where did she go wrong? she continues making her donuts, but part of her can’t shake the feeling that she could’ve done more to prevent the current situation. she places the donuts on a tray and into the oven, a deep sigh leaving her lips.
eventually, her husband arrives home and suddenly all of her worries disappear. she was content with her life. she was married to a lovely man and she had the most beautiful child. that’s all she ever wanted, all she’d ever dreamed about since she was small. so why did she find a part of her aching for something more? she ignores this feeling, calling down akemi for dinner and praying that she doesn’t bring up anything to do with fish.
akemi wakes up earlier that day, hearing her otousan leave for work. once she hears the click of the lock, she begins her plan to get her mother to admit everything once and for all. quietly sneaking down the stairs, she makes a careful note to skip the fourth step to avoid any creaking. managing the first part of her operation, she moves onto the kitchen, filling up a large tub with water. she tries to make as little noise as possible, trying not to let the tub overflow.
“akemi..? what are you doing up so—”
a loud splash. the sound of a flailing fish. absolute shock.
“oh my goodness mama i am so sorry you just scared me!!” akemi exclaims in distress, filling up a tiny bowl and placing the fish inside. it was a beautiful baby pink betta fish, a mini skull attached to it along with a cute bow— the kind of bow girls at school have to wear. the fish itself appeared to be glaring, causing guilt to overwhelm her.
“okay this is super bad.. how do i turn you back?!” akemi asks, a part of her hoping that her okaasan could still reply in a language she could understand. her hopes went to waste however as only bubbles leave her fish mouth. “uhmm.. stay right here i’m gonna go get dressed then head to school early and ask hanako for help!!” akemi rushes up the stairs, and fish nene faints.
when nene comes to, she’s in the girl’s bathroom in the old school building, leant against the wall. she doesn’t open her eyes at first, listening to the conversation taking place in front of her.
“wait— so you’re telling me that there’s a summer festival better than ours!! no way!!” she hears akemi yell in excitement, and nene almost smiles. almost.
“oh yeah!! the summer festival in the spiritual realm is so much better. i’m sure yashiro would agree— wouldn’t you?”
nene’s eyes shoot open, glaring at the two in front of her.
“huh, who knew turning your mama into a fish would land her in a bad mood!!” the boy with lamps for eyes jokes, and it takes everything within nene not to strangle him— maybe even get kou to exorcise him.
“hanako..” she says in an attempt to sound angry, but it only comes across as tender and soft. but why did her voice sound higher than normal? and why did she feel smaller?
the ghostly boy holds out a hand for her to take, and she grabs it gratefully, brushing off her school dress. she pauses. her eyes grow wide. and she screams.
hanako doubles over in laughter, circling her as she stands in shock. akemi looks at the floor awkwardly, clearly still feeling guilt for her previous actions.
“hanako what did you do?!” nene yells in horror, looking down at her daikon legs— legs that had grown to be long and slightly thinner as she grew older. she rushes to a mirror, and it was as if nothing had changed at all. even her hair clips were the same as they once were, and the boy’s laughter hadn’t changed either.
“this isn’t funny hanako!! be serious!!”
“but yashirooo!! haven’t you missed me?”
“of course but— i’m supposed to be tall and pretty not short and eugh!!”
“oh yashiro, you’ll always be pretty to me!! even if you’re a fish!!”
that was it. nene lunges for him, grabbing his waist and causing him to come crashing to the ground. she lands on top of him, her frustration clear. they stay like that for a few moments, nene keeping hanako on the ground as she glared at him angrily.
“uhh.. i’m still here guys..” akemi speaks up, causing the other two’s heads to snap towards her.
“you little—” nene stops herself, letting out a deep sigh. “of course you’ve met hanako, why else would you have turned me into a fish?”
“well actually i didn’t—“ hanako stops just as he begins, recognising nene’s glare as a force that he shouldn’t argue with.
“you two are going to fix this by the end of the day or im getting kou-kun to exorcise hanako,” nene states simply, and although hanako doesn’t want to believe her, a shiver still runs up his non-existent spine.
it had been 10 years since he had seen her. time had become a blur for him once he’d saved her all those years ago. she got to graduate. she had her wedding with her dream guy. she had children. at least— he thinks it’s her daughter that’s come knocking on his bathroom stall.

“akemi-channn!! have you heard the rumour about the ghost in the girl’s bathroom in the old building?” aoi himari calls out, barrelling towards the other girl in excitement. akemi holds her arms out, bracing herself for the impact of the girl pouncing on her. thankfully it never comes. “i haven’t heard the rumour, but i have a feeling you’re going to tell me anyways..”
“the most famous rumour of all!! the seventh of the seven wonders!! hanako-san of the toilet! you must knock on her bathroom stall and call her name three times!! when she replies back, you can ask her to grant your wish! although.. she’ll only grant it for something in return! super spooky right?” as himari rambles, akemi can’t help but roll her eyes.
“himari-chan.. you know that’s all just a rumour right? it’s not real!” akemi says, causing himari to pout.
“of course i know that!! doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be fun to try.. not that i would!! but you totally should just saying!!” she says quickly, and akemi raises her brows in confusion.
‘huh..? why would himari-chan want me to talk to a fake toilet ghost-girl..?’
despite her apprehension and confusion, akemi found herself outside of the end stall in the old building’s girl’s bathroom. it was eerily quiet and honestly too dusty for her own liking. she rolls her eyes in annoyance, knowing himari would tease her for this if she ever found out.
akemi raises her hand, gently knocking three times. “hanako-san, hanako-san, hanako-san,” she calls out softly, her heart beating out of her chest in nervousness. the anticipation was killing her. but nothing happens.
to be expected of course, because ghosts aren’t real. so why did her shoulder feel so cold? why did it feel like someone was breathing again her neck?
“you called?”
akemi screams so loud that she assumes the whole school can hear her. maybe the whole town for that matter..
“woah there.. settle down kid, you’re the one who called on me!!”
the boy was floating. like actually floating. akemi pinched herself gently, trying to see if she was dreaming. he had dark, chopped hair, mostly covered by a hat— typical of the uniform back in the 1960s to match the rest of his attire. his eyes were large, a bright yellow colour— like luminescent lamps.
“but.. hanako-san’s supposed to be a girl! you could just be some pervy guy in the girl’s bathroom!!” akemi yells, eliciting a chuckle from the ghostly-boy.
“i prefer hanako-kun actually! and for the record, i can’t really decide where my boundary is!!” he says, floating in a circle around her. as he assesses her appearance, they fall into an awkward silence.
“well?? aren’t you gonna ask my wish??” akemi asks, placing her hands on her hips. she eyes him up and down with sass, causing another laugh to leave hanako’s translucent lips.
“sorry sorry.. you just remind me of someone, that’s all,” hanako says, and akemi raises her brows a second time that day. “now, what happens to be your wish?”
akemi freezes, her demeanour becoming awkward. she hadn’t thought this far, it was obvious. hanako rolls his eyes, a taunting smirk finding its way onto his pale face. “you went through all this trouble to summon me, and you don’t even have a wish!! and here i thought i’d have something more interesting to do than play card with the mokke..”
he trails off and akemi decides not to ask what the mokke are. she takes a few more moments to think before deciding on something that had been eating at her.
“i wish to know more about my okaasan..”
hanako blinks in surprise before clasping his hands together.
“consider your wish granted!! however, i’m not a mind reader!! what’s her name?” he asks, a wide smile on his face. he was eager— too eager for akemi’s liking.
“don’t get so excited, you sound like you want to perv on her!! kimura nene is her name,” she scolds him before giving her answer, and suddenly ghostly apparition sinks to the floor in a heap. “wh— are you okay?!” she sits on the floor in front of him, staring curiously. he looked content. sad, but content. “i’m sorry… did i do something wrong?” she says softly, but hanako doesn’t move.
they stay on the cold bathroom floor for a while. akemi staring at hanako— hanako staring at the floor. his lamp-like eyes stay transfixed on the tiles, never moving.
“yashiro nene was a wonderful girl, and i’m sure the woman she grew to be is just as wonderful,” he says quietly, and if she wasn’t close enough akemi was sure she wouldn’t have caught it.
“hanako-kun.. what do you mean? i never told you her maiden name,”
“you didn’t have to, you have her magenta eyes and her sea foam green tips. at least you didn’t inherit her daikon legs i suppose..” hanako trails off, chuckling to himself. akemi’s eyes grow wide.
“no way.. you knew my okaasan?”
“she came to me because she’d heard i grant wishes, presumably just like you had. although, she actually had a wish in mind. a wish for love— the kind in all the romance manga she filled her head with. i attempted to grant it, but truth be told, i hadn’t experienced any kind of romance myself so it’s wasn’t much help. alas, we tried everything we could to gain her a true love. fruitless attempts really. she ended up swallowing a mermaid scale, a very dangerous cursed object. she had to have someone else swallow the other one to share the curse and bond them forever. she was going to give it to the person she loved— but she never did. she couldn’t bring herself to. long story short, a big scary apparition mermaid came to take yashiro away and the great hanako-kun swept her off her feet and saved the day! then i swallowed the other scale to ease her curse and keep us bonded forever, between life and death!!”
akemi listens to his story in complete shock, her mouth agape. her okaasan had never mentioned any of this, ever. she didn’t seem the type to end up in bound to a ghost! she was so strong and determined.
“soo.. he’s the deal!! you tell me what yashiro is like now, and i tell you what she was like in the past!”
“h-huh?! why would i tell you anything?!” akemi yells in confusion, still trying to process the fact her okaasan was technically part fish— does that make her part fish too? is this why okaasan always wore rubber gloves washing up? and always hated going out in the rain?”
“it’s the price for your wish!! trust me, you should be grateful! yashiro’s was her body!!” hanako laughs in delight and akemi lets out a horrified shriek.
“not like that!! goodness, you’re just as dirty-minded as yashiro! she’d have to clean my bathroom every day, keep your mind out of the gutter kid!!”
hanako bends over in laughter as akemi’s face grows redder by the second— she definitely needed to ask her okaasan some questions when she gets home..

you were currently sat on Elizabeth’s bedroom floor hugging a pillow tight to your chest as you wait nervously to see yourself. she had point blank refused to give you a mirror or even let you open your eyes, claiming that “it’s bad luck”. this made you nervous.
“hey lizzy..” you say nervously, bracing yourself for the answer.
“don’t move too much!! you’re gonna ruin my art!!” she exclaims, making you laugh softly.
“where did you get this makeup from?” you ask, curious about the answer. you weren’t even entirely sure what she was putting on your face, but you decided that would be a future you problem.
“mummy’s small pink bag!! there was sooo much in there!!” she says excitedly and you grimace. “oh don’t pull that face, it makes my art look ugly.”
you try not to laugh at her statement, opting to focus on the other issue instead.
“you stole from your mom? that’s not very good li—“
your half-hearted attempt at scolding the younger girl was cut short as the front door slams shut. Elizabeth flinches back and your eyes shoot open. their mother and father weren’t due back for another hour, so it couldn’t have been them.. Michael maybe? “liz stay in your room for me.” you say quietly and Elizabeth nods. you rush down the stairs, your eyes widening at his beaten state.
you see his shirt first, slightly bloodied and dirty. like clockwork, your eyes flick to his bruised face, you notice his bleeding nose and his rosy red knuckles which causes a concerned frown to form on your face.
alternatively, as soon as Mike sees you he bursts out laughing. he’s so humoured that he actually clutches his sides and wipes away tears.
“practicing for the circus?” he says in between laughs and suddenly most of his sympathy you felt for the other disappears.
“okay don’t be rude, lizzy tried really hard..” you pout, crossing your arms. Mike eventually stops laughing, but his boyish grin never leaves his face.
“ah, so a beauty pageant then? she’s been reading those shitty magazines that bang on about foundation and all that nonsense”
you roll your eyes at his antics, clearly not in the mood. “enough about me.. what happened to you?”
Mike’s smile falters at the change and suddenly he’s rubbing his jaw in soothing circles. you make your way to the kitchen, grabbing a small pack of bandages, a wet cloth and a small bowl of warm water. after, you grab some frozen peas and make your way back to the hall.
“do i even want to know why?” you ask, throwing the bag of peas at him so he can ice his jaw. he takes it gratefully and sits in the middle of the hall. you sit down beside him, taking one of his hands. you pretend not to notice his flinch when you touch him, and the soft hissing sound he makes as you wipe down his knuckles.
“just some absolute dolts that were at my group’s normal spot, it would’ve been fine if they didn’t start pushing around jeremy..” he says harshly as he balls his fists. he takes a deep breath, trying to calm down and prevent himself from snapping at you. you gently rub circles into his back as he breathes as an attempt to soothe him, knowing that speaking would only make it worse. eventually the tension in his body begins to melt, yet you don’t pull away from his back.
“how’s your jaw feeling?” you whisper, looking at his face with deep concern and care.
“hurts like a bitch but the ice makes it feel a little better,” he returns your gaze, his voice now soft and tender.
you laugh softly at his language, carefully wrapping his hand in a bandage. he watches you work your magic, a smile slowly creeping its way onto his face.
“what..?” you ask slowly, eyes flicking back up to his face.
“never thought i’d have a clown dress my wounds for me,” you can almost hear the smirk in his tone, causing you to yet again roll your eyes at his antics.
“i think vogue would take me on if i went looking like this, front cover and everything,” you smile as you speak and Mike begins to laugh again.
“oh totally.. what pose would you do? or would you just juggle?” he retorts, causing a few giggles to escape your lips.
you finish bandaging him up and fall into a fit of giggles as Michael begins to imitate different poses typically seen on fashion magazines. behind the two of you, little footsteps can be heard. Elizabeth slowly makes her way down and your laughter dies down slightly.
where ochako uraraka is trying to digest all of her trauma from the previous school year while also trying to understand why her ex boyfriend won’t even look at her.

everyone deals with grief differently, and everyone has someone to grieve. for example, mina had delved into her world of dance to distract her from the realities of midnight’s sacrifice. sato had baked so much that he might as well open a bakery— it worked out well because every refugee shelter in japan needed more necessities and every person in class one— 2A was willing to help deliver them.
hero’s dynamight and uravity were delivering boxes of baked goods from sato and clothes made by the support course and yaomomo. everyone had to leave in partners just incase, but the war had long since ended. ochako always tried to start conversations with bakugo, but he’d always brush her off. she’d requested to change partners multiple times, but she was always denied. she wished she could crawl into bakugo’s mind, somehow understand what he was thinking. she gave it up as a bad job after a while.
they flew in silence, all that could be heard was bakugo’s explosions that were keeping him up. she wasn’t sure what to say; it’s not like he’d reply to her anyway. instead of being sad or upset about this fact, she feels frustration build up inside of her. she’d tried so hard to try a build them back up, it was like a switch inside of him had flipped.
she stares ahead, determined to get this job over with.
it had been a particularly long night of patrol, her coming back at around 2am to katsuki sat on the couch on his phone. at the sound of the dorm building door open, his head shoots up.
“you’re two hours late.”
“i got caught up trying to find a little boy’s mother,”
“i thought someone had taken you. i know you can handle yourself but you know how dangerous it is with all of the villains out there and shit,”
thunder crackles in the background and ochako’s face softens as she approaches him. although katsuki’s face seemed emotionless, she couldn’t help but notice the slight tremor of his body and the way his eyes were sick with worry. it reminded her that he cared, despite the front that he put on. dropping her head piece, she pulls him into a tight embrace. he clings onto her desperately— like he’s afraid she’ll disappear from his grasp.
it was only them inside of the universe, and she’d gladly keep it that way until she died. even then, the stars they’d create would never be too far apart. they’d shine for each other, with each other. future astrologers would look up at their twinkling lights and marvel at their beauty. she was so certain.
lightening strikes and thunder booms— suddenly ochako is falling from the sky like an angel falls from grace.
it startled her, causing her to tap her fingers together to release her from her gravity-defying quirk— she hadn’t assessed the situation at all and now she was falling. and bakugo was diving. his warm body collides with her shaking one and he wraps a tight arm around her waist. she holds onto him as he uses his explosions to manoeuvre them to safety. her heart almost beats out of her chest and she can’t tell whether it’s from panic, anxiety, or a secret third thing.
they land in an alley, the supplies thankfully in one piece, floating gracefully beside them. despite them landing, katsuki doesn’t budge. he keeps his tight hold on her waist and she lets him— ochako lets him. they stay like that for a few moments, eternity, listening to each other’s heart beats, copying each other’s breathing pattern. twinkling at the same rate. completely synced.
bakugo’s the first to pull away, of course.
thunder grumbles in the background as rain slices their skin. they’re completely soaked, yet they still stand there in the alley, unspeaking with so much to say. he lifts up some bags and she mirrors him.
“the shelter isn’t that far of a walk from here,”
ochako blinks, and suddenly she’s back in the dorms.
she’s decided that katsuki’s embrace is her favourite place to be. it’s like summer’s afternoon sun, golden and joyful. it creates a ball of warmth deep inside her chest, enveloping her heart and causing it to do flips. and they always seemed to last for infinity.
they were in her dorm, her head resting on his chest as they co-exist together. she listens to his beating heart and feels his chest rise and fall. the pros were preparing for the war to begin very soon, and this would be one of the last times they’d be able to stay like this until the fighting began. both were determined to persevere through this war and win, even if it killed them.
ochako decides she wouldn’t mind dying in katsuki’s arms if it meant feeling his warmth.
“if you get scared you can hold my hand,” katsuki says teasingly, though ochako knows better than to assume he’s joking.
“i think you’ll be needing to grab mine more,” she giggles and he rolls his eyes in amusement.
“absolutely not, i’ll be too busy exploding the shitheads to hold your hand anyways,” he grumbles, causing her to laugh harder.
“so i can’t hold your hand if i get scared?” she asks, trying to catch him out. his eyes widen.
“no that’s not what i meant pink cheeks!! don’t go twisting my words!!” he pouts in a playful anger and she clutches her sides as she watches katsuki’s face heat up in a flustered false fury.
another strike of lightening crackles and ochako flinches.
bakugo opens the door of the shelter, walking straight in and not bothering to keep the door open for her. she pushes it open herself and places the bags down at the entrance, hurrying over to ryukyu as she’s the pro who protects the shelter. the two make quiet conversation as bakugo begrudgingly begins to unpack all of the items that they had carried here.
a cold shiver runs up ochako’s spine and she comes to the sudden realisation that she’s soaked due to the rain and currently dripping onto the floor of the entrance. ryukyu simply laughs at her embarrassment and offers the two to stay the night at the shelter as it may be too dangerous to go out in the harsh conditions. ochako looks back at bakugo and agrees when she sees his slight nod of acknowledgement.
bakugo hated the rain.
ochako limps across the rubble: her suit, hair, and body drenched with the relentless rain. she doesn’t know what to do. himiko toga had just sacrificed her own life to save her’s. she was so young— the same age as ochako. uravity was supposed to save people, but she couldn’t even save one teenage girl.
exhaustion overwhelms her as she manages to reach the main fight and she collapses to the ground, trying to look up at the scene around her. trying to find her kat. she carefully pushes herself up, trying to get further in. she sees deku in the sky, fighting for his life, for safety, against any villain who may threaten his path. then she sees him. her stupid, angry, explosive, wonderful boyfriend. she sees the light of his star go out.
katsuki hated the rain.
they are taken to their room for the night. it’s small, and there’s only one bed, but they were no strangers to sharing one. bakugo goes straight to the bathroom, opting to get changed into the spare clothes they were given in there. she peels off her own wet clothes, placing them on the radiator and getting changed promptly before laying down on the bed. the bathroom door clicks open and bakugo walks out, placing his clothes beside her own.
“i can sleep on the floor if you need me to pink cheeks,” he mumbles, his face void of any hints to what he was truly thinking.
she smiles softly and shakes her head in amusement. “i don’t bite, ka— bakugo,” she catches herself just in time.
bakugo walks towards the bed, laying down on the edge, facing away from ochako. she turns her body to look at him, only to be met with his back. she nervously wraps an arm around his middle, and seeing him relax causes her to move closer to him, resting her head on his shoulder.
and for a moment, despite everything, it was like the war had never happened.
everyone in class 1A was admitted to the hospital once the war was over, some only stayed for a few hours— others had to stay for up to a week. it was the longest week of ochako’s life.
since she wasn’t supposed to leave her room, and only family were allowed to visit, she has no way of knowing if her kat was okay— no way of knowing if the star that inspired her was still burning brightly. she was terrified, a constant state of panic and anxiety.
when she was released, and settled back into the dorms, she immediately went to katsuki’s room. she knocked gently (just incase, she’d never want to wake him) and waited for him to open the door.
“what?” katsuki opens the door. his face is unreadable and he can barely look at her in her eyes. he sounded so— rude. harsh. cold. not like her katsuki anymore.
“i wanted to check on you, i haven’t seen you since.. and i needed to know you were okay!” ochako says sweetly, her voice not as full as life as it used to be.
“i’m fine,” he says bluntly, shutting the door in her face.
ochako stands staring at the door, surprise written all over her face. she doesn’t know what to do. she walks down the hall in a stunned silence, horrified at the interaction. she chalked it up to the war still being fresh in his mind, and she knew that people had different ways to cope— like mina’s dancing and sato’s baking— but she never for a second thought that her katsuki would shut her out. she decided to give him the space he needed, of course.
but eventually, slowly but surely, everything was becoming normal again. she was back to hanging out with deku, iida, todoroki, tsu and yaomomo and bakugo was back with ‘his idiots’ as he would call them. but bakugo’s attitude towards her never changed. it was radio silence from his side. he wouldn’t even look in her direction— it was like she had a disease.
then they read the patrol assignments, and hope swelled in her heart. maybe, just maybe, they’d be able to burn as bright as they used to. his neutral face didn’t change, but yaomomo swears she saw the corners of his mouth twitch up ever so slightly when he read their names.
on their first patrol, it was raining.
the light pattering on rain against the window was heard as the two laid together. simply existing. ochako decides that she would willingly die this way like she did just last year. his warmth consumes her, burning into her skin.
“why won’t you look at me?” she asks gently, anxiously— as if he would break if she was any louder. she feels him tense underneath her.
“because all i see is the girl covered in blood staring at me in horror in my final moments”

when you were little, you didn’t understand why toby was different. you thought what was happening to him was normal, that it happened to everyone. the other kids would bully him, calling him awful names, his least favourite “ticking toby”. it made you angry. it wasn’t fair, and you decided from that day on that you would always be toby’s friend.
as you got older, you slowly began to realise the reality of the situation. toby was drowning, and you were determined to help him float. you thought you were making progress, and he had one person on each arm trying to pull him out of the water. you and his sister, lyra.
lyra died, and he plunged deeper into the dark depths of the ocean.
you weren’t sure if you were able to pull him out this time. you tried, of course you did, but he was beginning to pull you down with him. you couldn’t let him do that.
you shut your journal, opting to ignore the situation. you shouldn’t think about it for too long or it will become too real. but the handwriting was so clearly toby’s, and the message is only something he’d obviously understand. you open the journal again, flicking through every page. nothing. he had left you nothing. now, you weren’t even sure if what you had seen was real in the first place. you can feel the tall man’s stare— goosebumps attack your skin. nothing.
looking into the mirror is like looking at a painting someone has made of you. it’s so clearly a perception of you, but is it the real one? you weren’t sure. you needed to shower, and you needed to get dressed. everything is normal. nobody is dead. nobody is dead. nobody is dead.
the hot water scalds your skin, but you bear it. soap glides across your body, cleansing you of any blood that was on your hands— no. you shampoo your hair thoroughly, closing your eyes in relief as you finally get to relax. but the water begins to feel thicker, heavier. it felt stickier too— like a sweet syrup. you open your eyes. all you can see is a dense, dark red liquid. you don’t open your mouth, but you wish to scream. in an attempt to get out of the shower, you grip the sides and begin to get out. you move too quick.
there’s a loud thud, then silence.
you gasp for air, desperately trying not to drown. your eyes shoot open and your body moves quicker than you can think. the lights are too bright and the covers are itchy and your gown is clinging to your body. there’s an IV drip connected to you, a heart monitor beeping softly beside you.
confusion wracks at your brain, hammering at it and giving you a headache.
you think you’re in the hospital, but you can never be too sure. trying to remember what happened made your head swim. swimming not drowning. you remember water, and that was it.
a nurse walks in, his eyes widening when he sees you’re awake. he pokes his head back outside, asking a passerby to get a doctor to room 13 before coming back in. he faces you at eye-level, leans in slightly and attempts to make eye contact with you. you look away. you hated eye contact.
“a doctor will be here soon, do you know your name?” he asks smoothly. you nod, telling him your name. your voice is hoarse, and you’d come to the realisation you were dehydrated and hungry. how long had you been drowning for?
a woman in a white coat comes rushing in and you stare her down. “i’m doctor honey, i’ve been your doctor since you arrived,” she says and you continue with your staring.
“how long have i been here exactly?”
“you arrived two days ago, you really did hit your head hard. how is it feeling?”
“like someone’s taken a jackhammer and is hammering it into my skull,”
her laugh is sharp but warm, it brings a soft smile to your face. she whispers something to the nurse and he hurries off quickly. doctor honey sits in a chair beside your bed, aiding you to sit up and giving you a pathetic, flimsy plastic cup of water.
“do you remember what happened before you got here?” you shake your head no. you want to rest your voice, it hurts. everything hurts. your body is screaming at you to succumb to another slumber. you deny it of it’s right.
“at first, your mother thought you’d fallen in the shower. but under further inspection, we concluded that you had suffered blunt force trauma to the head through someone hitting you with the hilt of a tool— like an axe or a shovel.”
your eyes widen in shock, but your eyelids grow heavy so you immediately rest them. doctor honey’s face flashes with sympathy, and you suddenly realise this is a lot deeper than just seeing things.
“ah! jack! thank you for bringing me these dear, you can go take your break,” the nurse, who you now know as jack, rolls in a cart filled with different things that you don’t recognise. he smiles at you before taking his leave, quietly thanking doctor honey as he leaves.
“he’s an apprentice, you see. he only comes here on tuesdays because he’s in med school. he’s going to be an amazing doctor one day,”
you listen to her rambles, thankful for the distraction as she begins to check your head for wounds and change the plasters and wires and bags that have been keeping you alive for the past few days. you think you see the tall man in the corridor, the corner of your eye his favourite place, but he disappears when you look properly.
you think of toby, and what he would say. he always hated hospitals. they were always too bright, too clean, too empty, too sad, too dull, too cold. there was always something. you’d always go with him, even when you were kids and you had to get shots. you hated needles. you’d hold each other’s hand and squeeze your eyes shut tight as it went in, only to be removed shortly after and you not feel a thing. perhaps you should’ve been afraid of the monsters underneath your bed instead of needles. after all, they’re the only things that will truly hurt you.
you think further back, thinking of the warm, golden sun of a summer once lived. playing in the back garden with toby was the only thing you wanted to do. you were in this small doctor’s outfit, tending to toby’s ‘wounds’ (you had told him to pretend to break his leg) and finding him some sticks for crutches. he kept his fake cast on the whole day, and he wore it with pride. he even had you and lyra sign it. part of you wonders if he still has it— the other part knows it probably burned a long with his dad and the rest of the house.
doctor honey shines a light in your eyes and snaps you out of your trance, causing you to jump back in surprise. she apologises profusely, you forgive her, and she goes back to her check up. it must feel rewarding to be a doctor— you’d try if it wasn’t for all the blood. psychologist wouldn’t be so bad though. maybe you could teach people how to swim.

you slept in late— you always do during the summer. your mother never tends to bother you though, and she definitely doesn’t shake you awake with a panicked expression. you look at her with sleepy eyes, exasperated.
“what is so important that you decided to wake me so violently?”
“something terrible has happened.”
your eyes shoot open, like a light has been shined into them. your mother stops shaking you, opting to sit on the edge of your bed instead. that feeling from the before overwhelms you as your heart jumps into your throat. you don’t move. you don’t say anything. you don’t even breathe. you can’t.
“toby’s missing, and his father’s dead. the police believe that toby has done it but..”
she trails off, searching for something, anything in your expression.
you jump as drops of water fall down your face, their salty taste causing you to frown.
“is there a leak?”
your mother doesn’t reply with words, but her actions speak a million for her. she wraps her arms around you, pulling you close to her tightly, like she’ll never let go.
more droplets roll down your face— where is this water coming from?
an hour ticks by and your eyes feel like they’re on fire, burning you simply for existing. is this what hell is like? you push away from your mother. pity is written all over her face. or is it grief?
guilt consumes you, feeds on you. you knew something was wrong yesterday. you felt it eating away at your very core, your soul. it starved you of finding any way out of this endless rabbit hole of shame. he had told you he was going to do it, yet you did nothing to stop him. why didn’t you believe him?
you were still in yesterday’s clothes— you were too tired to change last night. grabbing at the sides of the hoodie, you pull it tighter to your body, bringing him closer to you. why didn’t you stop him?
your mother stays close by your side as you both make your way down the stairs. you don’t brush your hair. you don’t brush your teeth. you don’t even breathe. why can’t you breathe? keep walking.
you mindlessly sit down on the couch when there’s three intimidating knocks on the door. your mother gets it, and suddenly there’s three people in the same uniform asking you too many questions.
name? age? how do you know toby? when did you last see toby? why can’t you breathe?
you answer their questions the best you can while trying to seem as calm as you can. but you’re shaking, and your voice is wobbly. your mother brings the people in uniform some tea, and you some water.
one sip. two sips. three sips. glass shards on the floor. your mother apologises to the uniformed people profusely and begins to clean up your mess. you don’t move. you don’t even breathe.
the room is silent, and everything feels cold. your house barely feels cold, your mother always turns the heating up so high that she might as well be cooking you alive. so what was different?
the uniformed people leave after while, but they say they’ll be back. your mother shuts the door and locks it behind her. she doesn’t speak to you. she doesn’t even look at you. out of the corner of your eye, you see a tall shadow looming menacingly in the corner.
you wish to drown.
abandoning your seat on the couch, you make your way back up the stairs and lay on your bed. you figured if you laid there long enough, your body would decompose and you’d be nothing but ash and bone on top of the sheets. never breathing.
a knock on your window breaks your train of thought.
you sit up abruptly, staying still for a moment to allow your body to adjust to the change. hesitantly, you stand up and make your way to your window, looking outside. a dark figure could be seen outside, carrying what seemed to be an axe of sorts..? perhaps even hatchet. it was hard to see from your window.
the curious figure gestures to you, and then the door. they want you to let them in. out of the corner of your eye, you see it. the shadow. you swing your head around but it’s gone. are you going crazy? no.
you turn back to look out of the window again only to see the dark figure gone too. maybe.
you don’t breathe as you walk towards your bed. you don’t breathe as you get under the covers. you don’t breathe as you hide underneath them. maybe he had the right idea; maybe the tall man was coming for you now that he had toby.
is it that you are drowning?
getting out of bed after a sleepless slumber was useless, but realising things in your bedroom had moved around was even worse.
it was the small things you noticed first. like your red sweater was on the floor when it’s supposed to be on your clothing rack. maybe it fell off in the night? don’t be an idiot. some of your jewellery was missing. papers on your desk had been moved. your journal was left wide open with a pen on top of it. and you can’t breathe.
