My stance/(sort of rant) on the Mercy changes. (From a Tracer POV)
Every other hero gets to pick whether they want an aggressive, tactical, or more defensive playing style. Why force Mercy mains to change the way they approach the game? Now I completely understand if a Mercy is hiding somewhere for long periods of time that it isn’t okay, but those aren’t true Mercy mains. Most Mercy mains I have seen and have played with are constantly with their team and using guardian Angel to avoid being killed while going back and forth between teammates with their healing stream, not hiding behind a box or something. Plus wouldn’t it make more sense to just report the Mercy player who is just waiting somewhere and letting her entire team die? Personally it does bother me when a Mercy isn’t healing and instead is just hiding in the back waiting for everyone to die. However, with true Mercy mains they constantly try to heal and support the team, and their resurrect ultimate is incredibly useful when your team suffers serious casualties from an enemy ult. I honestly can see how this looks on both sides of the arguments and I’m not 100% against the rework but I’m defiantly not for it either. Here’s why.
The way Mercy’s original kit and ultimate were made her a character capible of making game saving plays that could potentially win a game, by resurrecting her teammates after suffering heavy casualties from the enemy team. But at a cost, seeing how Mercy sometimes reiceves little to no protection in lower ranks and doesn’t counter anyone, unless you count her ult which gave her an edge over everyone’s ultimate. While yes this can be clearly annoying and upsetting for someone who got a triple or greater multi kill but, that’s why you target the Mercy first. Overwatch is a teambased stagedy game that relies on communication and in higher up ranks combos. If there is a Mercy on the other team (an actual Mercy main who isn’t hiding) you should be aware of her and eliminate her before trying to cut down her team. Not only does this make killing enemy easier but it also prevents her from getting her ult charged up, if she’d doesn’t already have it by continuously healing the teammate of hers your shooting. And yes, I understand in the higher levels eliminating Mercy can be difficult since those players know how to and do protect their healer very well. However, that’s where you should be communicating with your team to try to come up with a different plan to get to her. So this update to a lot of Mercy mains feels like it’s just salty players complaining that her resurrecting the entire team, which Mercy mains rarely do, is unfair despite the fact that she doesn’t counter anyone combat wise.
The new Mercy kit gives her the ability to actually be a frontlines medic, heal and damage boost multiple members at the same time, and fly. Her new ultimate let’s her actually be a danger to the other team in a combat sense which is good. However, Mercy is still squishy and even if you are healing your entire team a D.VA and Zarya, or really any well placed/timed ult (which there are alot of higher ranks) can still wipe your entire team, leaving Mercy alone and only able to resurrect one member. She also might not be able to even save one as her ressurct no longer makes her immortal for a second. Plus Battle Mercies typically charge into battle like their invincible often forgetting about their actual job which is healing and supporting the team. So when they die it sometimes even costs their team the win. Plus the single resurrect thing will make it so people will constantly be screaming at them to pick them even though a smart Mercy would pick a tank in that situation to save rather then a squishy DPS. Not to mention Mercy players who are with their friends in these games will obviously only pocket and resurrect them. Despite this I do like the idea of having a stronger Mercy who can give the team and extra punch when needed, but I just see a lot of issues with this update.
My suggestion honestly is why not allow Mercy players to be able to pick between the new and old ultimate, like Symmetra can choose between her teleporter or Shield generator. And for the people that complain Mercies will continue to hide Why not make it she can only use her resurrect ult when she can see at least one or two dead teammates yellow orb that way she has to be in the general area of the battle and people won’t run off leaving her vulnerable if she can only revive teammates she can see or who are within a certain radius. This way both sides are for the most part happy and we also get to keep our Heroes never die phrase and the witch variation of it as well.
