"The frigate 'ROANOKE,' subsequently to the Civil war, was roconstructed at the Brooklyn navy yard. Her masts were removed; her sides armored: wod her broadside battery was replaced by an all-big-gun armament of six heavy guns mounted in three armored turrets. The correspondent who sent us the above illustration suggests that she was the first of the "Dreadnoughts."

USS ROANOKE (1855) was originally built as one of the Merrimack class screw frigates. She is the sister-ship to USS MERRIMACK. (The same ship which went on to be razed during the civil war, captured and converted into the CSS Virginia by the Confederates.) She served as flagship of the Home Squadron in the late 1850s and captured several Confederate ships after the start of the American Civil War in 1861.

In 1862, she was selected to be transformed into a monitor, as it would be faster to convert an existing steam powered ship than coming up with a new design. She was planned to be an ocean-going multi-turret monitor. Although, design flaws, such as the weight of her armor and turrets causing her to roll excessively and deep her draft, prevented her use to only harbor defense.

After her conversion was complete, local politicians in New York City lobbied to have her assigned to New York harbor. However, the Navy ordered her to Hampton Roads, Virginia, to join the blockading squadron there.

She remained there through the end of the war. Roanoke was placed in reserve after the war and sold for scrap in 1883

State Ship Series: USS COLORADO

There have been three ships commissioned named after the state of Colorado in the US Navy. The state of Colorado was admitted into the United States on August 1, 1876.

1. USS COLORADO (ACR-7)

Pennsylvania Class, Armored Cruiser, in commission from 1905 to 1927. In 1916, renamed USS Pueblo to free the name for BB-45.

She escorted convoys across the Atlantic during WWI. In 1920, she was reclassified as USS Pueblo (CA-7) when the Navy revised their hull number scheme. In the late 1920s, became a receiving ship. Scrapped in 1930.

2. USS COLORADO (BB-45)

Colorado Class, Dreadnought Battleship, in commission from 1923 to 1947.

Last lead ship of the Standard Type Battleship. She was part of the "Big 5", the group that consisted of the the most modern battleships of the interwar period. The group compromised of the Tennessee class and Colorado class.

She was in Puget Sound Navy Yard for an overhaul and refit during the Surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She was due to receive a modernization refit like the New Mexico Class with tower super structure but these plans were cancelled.

Both USS Maryland and her received the least amount of upgrades of the Pacific Fleet dreadnought battleships and by the end of the war were the least modern battleships retained by the Navy. A post war plan to turn her into a radio control target ship, similar to USS Utah (AG-16), was cancelled. She was scrapped in 1959. She was award seven battle stars during WWII.

3. USS COLORADO (SSN-788)

Virginia Class Block III, Attack Submarine, commissioned from 2018 to present.

State Ship Series: USS MINNESOTA

There has been two ships commissioned named after the state of Minnesota in the US Navy. The state was admitted into the United States on May 11, 1858.

USS MINNESOTA (BB-22), Connecticut class, predreadnought battleship, in commission from 1907 to 1921. Scrapped in 1924. She took part in the World Cruise of the Great White Fleet in 1909.

USS MINNESOTA (SSN-783), Virginia class block II, nuclear powered attack submarine, in commissioned from 2013 to present.

There has been one ship named after the Minnesota River.

USS MINNESOTA (1855), Merrimack class, screw frigate, in commissioned from 1857 to 1859, 1861 to 1865, 1867 to 1868, 1875 to 1895. She fought in the Battle of Hampton Roads with USS MONITOR. She was loaned to Massachusetts Naval Militia from October 1895 to August 1901. Later sold and burned in 1901 to recover her metal fittings.
